  1. Hey guys, I'm looking at visiting Manchester as a continuous cruiser and I wondered where are good places to moor up. Am I correct in thinking that it's for 7 days at a time? I'm coming from the Peak Forest canal, I've heard I might need a new license for the central Manchester waterways? Thanks in advance!
  2. Hi there, I'm about to buy a boat which has been fitted out (electrics-wise) for shore power, with loads of 240v plug sockets everywhere, TVs, Kettles etc, but we don't anticipate or want to be hooked up at all. What I was wondering was if anyone has had experience in changing this sort of setup over to a 12v, battery-based setup, and what challenges they faced whilst doing so. Is it just a case of removing the external hookup point, connecting the internal wiring to the existing 12v loop (which runs the cabin lights etc) and replacing the 240v sockets with 12v ones? Maybe keep one or two and run through a separate, inverter-containing loop from the battery bank? I don't expect it to be that easy but hopefully it won't mean ripping the walls apart! Cheers, Alistair
  3. Hi, We are moving our boat from Bulls Bridge to Bristol in the next couple of weeks, but can't find any decent information on the mooring sites that you can continuously cruise without fees, like here in London. Please please help! We want/ NEED to be near public transport for work, but don't need to be central if it's super pricey! Any info you have please share!
  4. Hi All! I am in the process of planning my first summer cruising. In preparation I am getting the engine fully checked over and any work done in advance. I'm also arranging to go out on several short journeys to get the hang of steering, locks and boat etiquette. (I am a complete novice). From what I gather from the forum's experienced users, the only way to learn is to actually get out and do it, balls up on occasion and learn from it (I have been watching the Prunella Scales & Timothy West series on More 4 and see that ballsing up is not just the preserve of novices) The GB summer is very short and I am hoping to make the most of it I would love to travel from Nottingham to Cambridgeshire and explore Cambridgeshire over the summer while I consider mooring options for the winter. I know this is ambitious for my first summer, but feel that a summer cruising and becoming familiar with locks and different waterways will to build my confidence and skills and allow me an insight into the reality of continual cruising which is an option I am considering for the future. I think that there is a route planner that I could use to plan my trip, but am unable to locate it. If anyone could point this out that would be great. Does anyone recommend using a checklist of any kind? Some boaters I have met have made up their own which they follow prior to setting off. Are there any supplies other than fuel, food & drink, basic first aid and tool kit that are a must have? I will be planning regular stops and some will be unplanned due to weather conditions, no doubt. If there are any points of interest / stops that are recommended along the way I would love to hear about them along with any hints & tips that I may have overlooked as a novice. Many thanks in advance for all replies!
  5. Hi All! I'm totally new to boating, although I have wanted to live on a boat & escape the rat race for over 10 years I took the plunge last Summer and bought my first boat a 27 foot cruiser, which I love! It was one of the best decisions I made. I'm a complete novice sailing / cruising wise (I don't even drive a car!) So, I'm asking what seems to be a really friendly & knowledgeable community for some advice & practical help. I would love to take my boat out a lot in Spring / Summer but have absolutely no confidence or skills to do so. I plan to take a course in the Spring - recommendations welcome - I'm based at Sawley currently (but hope to move asap). If any locals were available go on a few short cruises in the meantime to enable me & my partner to get our bearings, we would really appreciate it and offer recompense to any willing Captains of our boat for their time & trouble Also, we are currently based at Sawley Marina. We love the local wildlife, cycle paths and a few local hostelries here. But I am disappointed to report that I have never experienced such a negligent, ambivalent, rude and inadequate management team in all of my personal and professional life. The 'customer service' is apalling. The security here is lax, to say the least, with several unsavoury characters and little sense of community, which has prompted us to want to move asap. We want to try out Nottingham Castle Marina as it is nearby and centrally located to Nottingham city centre. Does anyone have any feedback on this marina as a potential base for the winter? Ideally, I plan to moor here on a temporary basis to test it out, but any first hand experience would be invaluable and very much appreciated. I look forward to all replies. Thank you in advance for any feedback and or willing Captains who respond Warmest wishes to all:)
  6. Hi, I am looking for some advice as a lot of the research I have been doing it still slightly confusing. We are buying a narrow boat as a weekend retreat, holiday home if you like, we will still be living in our “brick and mortar home” As we are not going to live in the boat full time and it’s for leisure only, will we be able to moore up anywhere and leave it and then move it within 14 days or will we have to buy / rent a permanent mooring and this has to be the place we leave it when it’s not being used during the week? Do we get any kind of discount as it would only be an ongoing leisure mooring and not a mooring where we would live full time? Thank you
  7. OK a hypothetical or may be not question and note I am a marina dweller so this wouldn't apply to me. If a CCer takes a winter mooring does that mooring for those months become his home mooring? If it does can he cruise from there in the same way I can from my mooring, ie travel out moor up for a bit, move on and then return to the mooring? If so when he/she returns to the mooring is the cruising pattern clock reset, ie travel to Stone stay 14 days on to Gt Haywood and stay, back to Stone for another 14 days and back to the mooring. What has prompted this thought is the, what appears to me to be the stupid location of winter moorings. At Rugeley between the aqueduct and the by pass, to get water you have to go all the way to Gt Haywood and back. Stone, up above the town so there to get water its down through 3 locks and then back again. So could a boater take a mooring above Stone spend say a week there and then two weeks in town before going back to his mooring for a week and then repeating it. Who would want to be stuck out there for 4 months?
  8. Hiya folks! Bought our 57" narrowboat a few months back, and had intended to just CC for winter, but tryna navigate finding work, travelling to study, a mad collie AND moving every 2 weeks is proving to be a bit much for the time being! Anyone know of any last minute winter moorings that aren't too isolated?.... Anyone got a contact for Phoenix ? Thanks ! Will
