  1. Hi all i thinking of fitting secondary glazing using clear acrylic sheet and magnetic tape. Has anyone done this and if so how effective has it been. My boat has 18 windows and umpteen vent on the roof. i am looking at way of keeping the boat warmer. I have a morso squirrel with a eco fan but this only tends to heat one end of the boat. we also have a back boiler but this only heats the radiators if the fire is absolutely blazing. we are just getting the hang of keeping the fire going all night but it is still really cold in the mornings and I feel having so many cold pain of glass and draft has a lot to do with this problem.
  2. My illness has caught up with me and I cannot make as much of half term as I would like. However, I have decided to stay on Charm all week, so at least I feel like I am away. I have finally sussed the bed dilema and have found if I put a quilt under my sheet, I no longer feel the cold coming up from the tank under my bed. I feel quite toastie, epsecially when I put the two hot water bottles down the bottom of my bed with the the cushions stuffed between my bed and the uninsulated engine room. Yesterday (Tuesday) Geof came over as I have been donated some laminate flooring (second hand) but felt on my inspection that they were too damaged to have enough to make any good from them. G, however, not only thought differently, but has started laying them in the kitchen area, skilfully cutting around my fire place. He is kindly coming back to finish the job tomorrow. All I could do whilst he was working was sit on the steps and watch. Eventually, feeling that I ought to be doing something, made us a cup fo tea then decided to sort the drawers either side on the steps on which I was sitting. All my different 12V cablesnow have a neat elastic band around them. Boat paperwork in another drawer, stationery, cards and games another, all my old tapes from home for the old car tape player on Charm sorted into religious and secular music. Today (Wednesday), my sister in law and nephew have come over for a trip out. The weather for the last two days has been cold and bright, today it is just cold and cloudy. We left about quarter to 12 after I had been to the expensive pump-out before they came. PiR kindly came out in the bitter cold to raise the bridge for me. Sadly, two trip boats had gone ahead of us,so no locks would be set. When we got to Latton lock, there was a bit of a queue but the other, non- trip boat gave me an opportunity to show the ropes, so to speak, to June and Aaron. This boat also suggested that I took Charm into the lock with him, but I declined as I wanted to protect my new blacking as long as possible. We later tried out a small 12V heater for car windscreens I had bought to try and keep my feet warm on long journeys but as we were all in and out, and all doors open, i couldn't feel much benefit, but June said she could if it was right on her feet! I lent her a pair of socks for the return journey. When arriving at the next lock, the two wide beam trip boats were moored side by side above the lock, with no other berths available. I decided to moor where we were, but just enough off the lock landing to allow others to use it. After a lovely lunch at the Harlow Mill the sun decided to come out for our return journey.Unfortunately it was so bright and low that when we got back to Latton lock I managed to catch the corner as I came in, rubbing the blacking after all. PiR, gallantly came out to let us back in again and a good time was had by all.
  3. Two interesting posts on Narrowboat world that should be bit of a warning to anyone thinking, "I fancy living on a boat" Winter can be different from 2 weeks holiday in the summer and you do need to change your life style in a lot of cases. http://www.narrowboatworld.com/10581-it-is-so-blasted-cold http://www.narrowboatworld.com/10588-took-to-an-hotel
  4. I thought I'd share my attempt last week at making a wine cellar * beer cellar/cider store/veg store*....I've been putting it off for ages but now that non-private BSS has been done AND the Business license is going through with crt, i thought I'd better pull my finger out and do a few jobs before we get our first guest on board (10th April). STILL not got enough bookings to make us rich but pleased to have 6 lined up so far.Anyway - I remembered a door frame (don't ask) I had left in the garage at home so went to collect some post and loaded it into the car. Not wanting to buy any more wood, I convinced myself that it wouldn't look odd using both 1 and 2 inch sections to make a frame.... Having gone back into the boat, I rather sensibly (for once) had the idea to number the pieces on the floor before taking it up. I used a bit of masking tape and simple 1-36 system.Once the frame was the size I wanted it, put it on the floor, drew around it and then took it up. Having already removed ballast here, there were cut sections in the sub floor but of course NOT the place I wanted them... to add insult to injury, there was also a bearer in the wrong place meaning the last 6 inches of the store would not be usable. Not the end of the world though as I just moved it up a bit. Moving it up of course meant I needed to cut some MORE floor out... and of course having sold my corded multi-too when we emptied the house/garage out, I was left using the battery version. Luckily I had a few charged up batteries *note to self - rotate the regularly on the charger*.That seemed to take all afternoon so I abandoned it for the day and came back to if fresh yesterday afternoon (having had chores to do in the morning). I began fitting back in the cut out sections down each side (once I'd tested a bottle of Pepsi (other coal flavoured soft drinks are available)) would fit. and then cut the sub floor to fit into the recess.Whilst I'm sure I DID take more photos as I was doing things, my phone seems to have other ideas... as the next one it has stored is the (relatively) finished result It's VERY sturdy and doesn't flex at all when walked on... I still need to find some flush handles to lift it out with and I'm toying with the idea of fitting hinges on one side.... It doesn't look too bad and I'm quite pleased with it. I still need to paint it out inside... I've got some hammertie garage door paint lurking somewhere so that will suffice.
  5. A little taste of winter boating: In other news, the Tring summit was well watered, and after a bit of filling had plenty of water down the flight. Even had plenty of water through Berko for a change.
