  1. Hi all, My partner and I are looking for a narrow boat which we plan to live on around the Bristol/Bath area. We're after surveyor recommendations as we're on a tight budget so can't afford to be caught out with buying a boat that needs lots of over-plating and drains all our funds that we've put aside to do an internal re-fit! We're looking at project narrow boats which need some or all of the interior fitting out. Can anyone recommend a good surveyor to us please? we are interested in a few boats which are in different places round the country so it would need to be someone who will be wiling to travel. Also we are looking for hard-standing in the Bristol area where we can do any work to the interior that is needed- does anyone know of anywhere with space and which allows full-time access? thanks in advance, Imogen and Staszek
  2. Hi all! I'm pretty new to the cut ( last september ) and sadly looks like I will be made redundant from my job of 7 years in the near future :/ I come and have lived in a fairly small village on the K & A. As work is so scarce in my area I have decided to move to Bristol on my boat and as my redundacy pay will only be a small amount (£2000- £2500) will not be able to afford mooring fee's in the near future in all likely hood. As far as work goes I'll do whatever pays the bills but transport is a issus as i do not drive (aside from the barge ) Now to my questions (I have searched as much as I can but getting online can be differcult and thus far have not been able to find much in the way of info and was hoping someone could help me who lived near by or has been in the same sort situation ) 1) Can you moor in bristol its self with out paying fee's if you're willing to move every two weeks inside bristol it's self( I'm a genuine C C at the moment and walk/cycle or bus into my current job) 2) I understand that commuting into Bristol from along the canal is farly easy (from what I've read) but was wondering what the rough cost of buses and trains tend to be and how easy it is to get these ( I figure a hour or 2 traveling a day is ok if the they run early enough ( get you into the city before 8 or 9am)) I'm sorry if these sound like stupid questions but at a bit of a loss at the moment and could do with any and all help. I know the first question is a bit of a no brainer and assume you can't but best to ask right? Thank you and may I say great web site and community, has helped me out with a lot of things these last few months should of joined rather than lurked long ago!
  3. A friend is docking a boat on the slip at Underfall Yard, Bristol and is looking for someone to share (there's room for two narrow boats). It's the 8th to 13th August and will cost £376 which is the cheapest in the southwest by a fair amount. Access to Bristol dock is free if you're docking at Underfall. Send me a message if you're interested.
  4. Hi everyone, If you're reading this, thank you! I have just stumbled across this site while investigating this evening, and as I am struggling to find information elsewhere I would really really appreciate it if anyone could give me some advice and tell me whether this idea I've had is viable. At the end of next year, I will (hopefully!) be off to University. This has been quite a scary thought for me for some time, mainly because I am really something of a recluse and the idea of having a kitchen and living space and in some places a bathroom and bedroom shared with strangers frightens me. I am also very attached to my pets, and I don't like the thought of leaving them behind as one is required to do in student accommodation. When my parents were young and still together, they lived aboard a canal boat with my older brother as well. While I was born later when they'd moved into a house and so have never lived aboard a canal boat, I've heard a lot about it from the three of them and from my dad's friends who live on the canal, and about a week ago I realised that this could be an option for me when I go to university. I've done some research and found that you can get a smaller boat for under £10,000, sometimes only £6000. However, I've struggled to find out about moorings - my dad mentioned two week free moorings that he could use when he had his boat, but that was twenty years ago and there is no mention of that online. A lot of the moorings I find as well seem to only be for holidays; while I would go home at the end of term, the boat would really be my main residence. I'd really like to know more about mooring costs or whether it is possible to moor a boat in some places for free. Also, other living costs; would I have to spend a lot on fuel and electricity and such? Particularly useful would be information about moorings near universities of Warwick (Coventry), York, Bristol, Oxford, Birmingham, Nottingham, Durham and Lancaster, so if anyone lives around there I would love to hear from you! And just generally, I'd like to know more about what it's like to live aboard a canal boat. What are the most challenging things about it, and what are the things you enjoy the most? Thank you. Rosie
  5. It occurs to me that others may find our experience of the crossing from Bristol to Sharpness (on Monday 21st August 2017) of interest. Our account of the journey is on our blog at http://ianhelencanals.blogspot.co.uk/2017/08/out-on-mighty-severn-bristol-to.html Happy boating! Ian and Helen on Narrowboat Leo
