  1. Planning a cruise on the BCN this week, can a 50ft boat still wind at the Carter's Arm?
  2. Another puzzle I'm trying to find out - why Albion Junction, linking the BCN Brades Hall branch and the new Main Line, got its name. Thanks.
  3. Hi there I will be moving my boat up to Birmingham for a new job. We live aboard and are wondering where the best moorings are? My partner will be working in the city centre and I'll be in solihull. We have 1 car Thanks
  4. We're heading to the Stourbridge rally and thinking of overnighting above Park Head locks as we've not been up there before, and as a change from Merry Hell. Is it safe to moor there? Any local knowledge much appreciated.
  5. I was given a book for my birthday, Canal Mania by Anthony Burton, it’s self it is actuall an old publication from 1993. The most interesting thing is that it contains a photograph of a BCN toll island, I believe the one at Wilson Green. The toll island is in pristine condition complete with the building, railings etc. I don’t believe I have seen a picture like that before. Are there other pictures around of the toll islands in their original working condition?
  6. Morning all, I ventured up the arm to Bradley workshops a few weeks back and only got as far as the halfway winding hole. There was a large log across the narrows just beyond, which seemed to have steel rope attaching it underwater - it then started to rain heavily, so I didn't investigate further. Progress was slow and the weed was thick put passable fairly easily. Just wondered from the BCN experts, what is the situation regarding going to the workshops at the end and turning - presumably this is still possible? Thanks
  7. http://www.bcnsociety.co.uk/?18 We are planning on taking Tawny Owl to this, so we may have a few spare bunks available Anyone else up for this, the BCNS know how to throw a good do Richard
  8. Wonderful video I've just been sent discussing Council plans to develop round Gas St Basin http://www.macearchive.org/Archive/Title/atv-today-05051967-gas-street-basin/MediaEntry/33235.html
  9. I'm hoping BCN experts might be able to help me out again... I've heard various conflicting accounts of how boats accessed the Springvale Steelworks site. In the first couple of decades of the 20th century, would anyone know definitively where their wharf/wharves might have been located? Also, given that Hickmans are known to have had a large fleet of mainly pretty battered open day boats, would anyone know what the fleet was actually used for? Was it internal transfer work, bringing in raw materials or taking away finished products... Cheers Nick
  10. We're thinking of mooring at Bumble Hole for a night next week. 1) Is this sensible? 2) When people say they've moored at "Bumble Hole" do they mean the Dudley mainline or the Bumble Hole Loop? Is Harris's Yard usable and does it have overnight visitor moorings? Any advice welcome. 65ft boat. Thanks.
  11. I have just finished a week of boating on the BCN with the CCT/BCNS owned ex-GU pair Atlas and Malus. The primary work of the boats these days is undertaking Duke of Edinburgh Award Gold Award residential courses. Thankfully for me this qualifies as valid voluntary work for me to be able to take leave to skipper one of the boats for a week each year. The trips require the crews of up to 10 young people to camp in the hold and make the best of the provisions they are given while learning to work as a team on helping to work the boats. They also spend a day helping out at the Black Country Living Museum. The itinerary involves starting at Hawne Basin on a Monday lunchtime and moving to the Black Country Museum where the boats are allowed to moor on the museum arm and be exhibits for 36 hours while the candidates do their work in the museum. On Wednesday lunchtime the boats are then moved to the Titford Pumphouse where the candidates spend the night. This involves working the pair up the Crow (Oldbury locks) which is challenging. Thursday is down the Crow and Smethwick locks to Birmingham for a visit to the Libarary and a look at the Staffordshire hoard followed by overnight at Icknield Port. On Friday it's back to base at Hawne and go home. The boat skippers don't get to stay aboard as the youth workers that run the courses have to do that. Overall it's great fun and introduces young folk to boating (and the delights of the BCN) while developing them as people. I am one of the least experienced crew on the boats and my co-skipper was also fairly inexperienced on the boats (even though he is a luminary in the BCNS). Hence it's also a learning experience for the skippers especially as I have spent much more time on the butty Malus than I have on Atlas in the past. Mistakes were made and no-one is under the pretense we are expert in the ways of moving working pairs. I did at least manage to turn the breasted pair at Old Turn junction yesterday and outside Hawne Basin this afternoon with an audience for both. Just for once the cock-ups were out of the gaze of the public.
  12. This photo came in to me today from a local historian. The location is a mystery but some things have been determined which may be familiar to someone. The boat is a standard BCN style Joey, although it may be a "Hampton "boat as it looks wide. The rudder is upside down leaning on the first beam in the fore end / stern end well. The boat appears to have been chopped down for some of its length leaving only maybe one or two at the most planks in the side, this could mean it was a bricklayers boat for canalside repairs. The stop lock looks wide too (if it is a stop) hence suggesting the 47ft level (Wolverhampton level). Is it a place you recognise? there may be a pit head gear to the left of the three figures right of centre. Also the could be a date in the side of the stop guard iron. Suggestions welcomed The photo has been enhanced to bring out detail: ENLARGEMENT OF BOAT:
  13. Hi all, We have recently bought a beautiful but neglected narrowboat called Jasmine and we would love to find some history. In some old surveys from the 90s it says that she was built in 1964 by Graham Parker at Norton Canes Docks as a direct copy of a BCN tug with the same name, after hours of searching we can not find a BCN tug named Jasmine or any information about our boat, until I found a post on here that suggests she may have been built in 1961 by John Humphries who was a Director of Lew-Way in Brownhills. Here is a link to the post that i found In the 2nd video on this post you can see what looks like our boat, Here are some pictures of Jasmine as she is today ready to be renovated, we have some old negatives of the original sign writing that i will upload soon. If anyone has any information or old pictures we would be very grateful.
  14. Some may have seen the virtual tour of historic narrow boat Swallow at the Black Country Living Museum. Back in Birmingham for the 2015 BCN 24 Hours Marathon Challenge I did the photography for another virtual tour. The idea was to cover all 13 Farmers Bridge locks, but, with panoramas of Gas Street Basin and Old Turn Junction added, and panoramas shot last year, of Sherborne Wharf and Ladywood Junction, the virtual tour now covers a wider area of the canals in Central Birmingham: There are short links to the main areas: Farmers Bridge locks from the top downwards: j.mp/farmers-bridge-locks Farmers Bridge locks from the bottom lock upwards: j.mp/farmers-bridge-locks-up Gas Street Basin: j.mp/gas-street-basin Old Turn Junction: j.mp/old-turn-junction Ladywood Junction: j.mp/ladywood-junction Sherborne Wharf: j.mp/sherborne-wharf Of course all the panoramas are visually linked to each other. The idea for creating this virtual tour was to create a very detailed source of information. I'm adding my own photos from the 1980s and the historic information I can find, it would be wonderful if you could contribute with old personal photos and historic information! The difference between the 1889 view and today can be significant - see lock 7. At the moment, the name is still "Farmers Bridge Locks Virtual Tour", any idea for a better name would be most welcome!
  15. Hi I’m trying to work up a new colour scheme for our day boat, a scheme that will hopefully reflect many traditional BCN practices. I’m interested in learning a little more about decoration/designs used on the shoulders, or top strake, around the fore-end/stern of day boats. I believe the designs were used to help steerers rapidly identify a company boat from amongst countless other day boats. Companies would have had a particular and unique combination of crescents, circles and diamonds etc. to designate their boats. Was a record or register of such designs kept? Or did steerers simply memorise particular designs as required? More particularly still, would anyone know the design used on the Hickman fleet? regards Nick
