Going on my first trip down the Thames from Oxford to Brentford and up the GU. Got The River Thames Book and the map. Any good tips or advice would be appreciated. Bit worried about beyond Teddington lock and the tidal part but perhaps I'm being a wus pants. It's a 45' NB with a good 36 hp Lister engine. Have and anchor and life jackets but never used either yet. The boat is so equipped as it used to go on the river Trent earlier in its life. Reading about tides but already I'm confused! Done a few miles of canals so can handle the boat fairly well. Anyway, all help gratefully received. Rob

Hello After hiring for over 10 years, all over the country, it’s about time we did the Thames. Our week’s hire of a narrow boat is at the end of March 2014 and picking the boat up in Aldermaston. Do you have any hints, tips and advice about what to do, or not. We hoped to head downstream, through Reading, Henley, and Marlow to Windsor. I have done many kinds of locks over the years, and have even conquered staircases! The Thames locks, reading another thread, seem to be vast, electric ones, and with us going in March I take it they will be unmanned, so is there anything I should be aware of, any tricks of the trade? Also about mooring. The last river we tackled, that may be too strong a word, was the Avon, from Bath towards Bristol. Lovely river but few places to stop and moor, it was a bit of an eye opener after canals, so what about mooring on the Thames? I suppose all this may be irrelevant if the weather is like it is at the moment. Is the Thames often impassable when water levels are high? And lastly is downstream as good as upstream, through Wallingford to Oxford, or is it just a matter of where you actually want to go, if you see what I mean. I look forward to your advice and knowledge. Jac

Hi there Wondering if anyone has any advice re whether to go from Thames (upstream) to Oxford canal using the first entrance (sheepwash) or the 2nd (dukes cut). I've heard mooring on the lower section of the Oxford is sparce. But given my boat is 60ft I'm finding the Thames difficult to moor on. Thanks for great advice on previous post Cath

Morning guys, I am really starting to get irritated by the conditions here. I would never have paid all that money to be sitting with nowhere to go and no end in site. I am not seeing very much change in conditions and the Red Boards are still out. My big problem is that over the next few days we will be getting more rain coming into the system from the west. exasperating the situation. Is there anyone local that understands these conditions, that could shine some light on my rather gloomy outlook. UPDATE > > > >UPDATE > > > > I'm on the move. We have gone to Yellow Receding. YAY !!!
