I know a lot of people have been talking about leaving electric oil filed radiators switch on on unattended boats for frost protection. Screwfix has issued a recall on two of the ones they sell. I am sure other supplies also sell this product so even if you didn't buy from Screwfix it may well be worth checking yours. http://www.screwfix.com/images/general/grx/ProductRecallRads.pdf

I usually charge my batteries using solar. Occasionally I find myself staying in places with large buildings and, especially in the winter, I notice my batteries aren't getting topped up enough. I have a generator but do not want to damage the batteries by using a rubbish charger. What would people suggest. Generator claims to be 1000W and I have 3no 110A leisure batteries I want to charge. Thanks!

I drove into Banbury. Naturally had a look at the canal, boats nose to tail until the town section not one boat excepting one at Tooleys .Surely the visitor mooring which are too short a term at best of times could be extended for the winter period .

Hello all, Looking for some advice. I have recently been lure fishing whilst living on my Narrowboat in the Midlands (normally between Milton Keynes and Welford). I have recently been drop-shotting and even though apparently more of a winter method had some great fish in the summer dropping it in at likely structural points where you'd expect to find perch waiting to pounce. My problem is now that winter is well and truly here and the water is quite clear I've managed to watch sizable perch approach my dropshot jelly, have a good look, bob around it, nudge it and bugger off....countless times. I'm currently using braided mainline with a fluro-carbon-leader (10Ib strength) and tried multiple size and colour of lure. In summer I've caught good perch out of the same area but would love to get better at the dropshot technique...anyone know where i'm going wrong? I would be keen to do catch these on a jelly rather than just popping a worm on or going back to floating a maggot......any experienced dropshot heads here?? cheers, Pete

Hi everyone This is our first winter with our narrow boat - Dragon. We do not live aboard but visit Dragon most weekends. She is moored on an offline marina. Do we need to completely winterize or is it enough to lag pipes etc. We have a central heating system with a frost protect mode but would that give us enough protection against pipes freezing etc. Any help appreciated

We are in our first winter of owning a boat and have woken to find the canal frozen The boat is easily breaking through the few millimeters that has formed but I am worried that we might be damaging the boat Any advice? Forecast says warmer today but colder again Wednesday and Thursday Thanks Angela NB Network Explorer

Hi all we are at the boat but obviously will be leaving to return home for the lockdown (I am a paramedic and will have to work). Previously I have never ‘winterised’ the boat as I have continued to use it through the winter (3 years). what do people think we should do in prep to leave her for a month (and who knows how much longer?) . We are in a marina at Tewkesbury and the boat will be monitored thanks

Are there any drawbacks to a repaint in winter? I have found a slot in Jan or Feb next year.

Hi, Just wondering, where do people keep their battery banks on the boat? Mine are in the engine bay and I've noticed they lose their charge a lot quicker now it's cold. Does anyone keep them in the living area to keep them at a more stable temp. How does this work with the BSS regs? George

Hi all, Firstly, a quick shout out to everyone in this forum for all their help and advice to date. This really is a great community! I hope I will be able to pay it back with my own advice in the future when I become a little bit more clued up! I wasn't sure whether to post this in the boat building and maintenance, but considering I'm still a boat baby I thought it best to start here ? 1) I sprung a leak from a jubilee clip on my inlet into my engine radiator today, nothing major and crisis averted thankfully. The experience made me realise how important it is to have a socket set on board. What are people's view on drive size? 3/8, 1/4 or 1/2 inch? 2) Regarding keeping my acid lead batteries happy over the winter. Someone I met mentioned it's prudent to insulate the battery bank with rubber. Is this good advice? 3) I need to install a mains battery charger for when I moor up in a marina for the winter. Any recommendations? Thanks ya'll George x

My wife wants a snowy winter. Personally I'd rather head south but since she wants a snowy winter I'll see what I can do to give her one, snowy winter that is. The snowier the better. will probably be the last one she requests. So where is the snowiest place on the system? In a typical year though not the weird ones like the last few. Cheers, Alan.
