  1. This may stem the invasion of the widebeams. Notice Alert Grand Union Canal Location: Bridge 24 Warwickshire Fly Boats, Long Itchington, Grand Union Canal Starts At: Bridge 22, Bridleway Ends At: Bridge 60, Blue Bridge Up Stream Winding Hole: Kingswood Junction Down Stream Winding Hole: Napton Junction Tuesday 27 June 2023 08:00 until further notice Type: Navigation Restriction Reason: Structure failure Original message: Unfortunately movement of the towpath side waterway wall underneath this bridge has caused the canal width to reduce by 120mm, and so, for the foreseeable future, we’re having to for the foreseeable future reduce maximum beam for navigation from the published 12’6” to 12’. Following a detailed review of the options for repair, and thorough ground investigations and surveys, we have concluded that the benefits to customers are substantially outweighed by the costs of carrying out the works. We have an ageing infrastructure, and we have to carefully prioritise our spend based on risk. We will continue to monitor the bridge and particularly the narrows and, in the future, when we need to carry out any structural repairs to the bridge we will again consider widening of the narrows, and update you accordingly. In the meantime, boats up to 12’6” can be winded at Napton Junction. You can view this notice and its map online here: https://canalrivertrust.org.uk/notice/25521/bridge-24-warwickshire-fly-boats-long-itchington-grand-union-canal You can find all notices at the url below: https://canalrivertrust.org.uk/notices I think spending less maintaining the wide waterways rather than keeping the full width is a great idea.
  2. Hi all 👋, first post on here but probably one of many, I'm currently looking into the heating system I am going to install on my widebeam i was hoping you could take a look and tell me what you think and if it all looks ok. (Heating sorce: Solid fuel fire and diesel water heater Heating up - radiators, under floor heating and hot water) I am thinking of installing the bubble b1c1 corner stove with back boiler, also what are peoples thoughts on the Prity AM 12 ( https://fireplacesforhome.com/Wood-Burning-Stove-Corner-Model-Fireplace-Log-Burner-Solid-Fuel-Prity-AM-12kw ) multifuel stove? And also a webasto diesel water heater. All my heating appliances are going to run to the NRG zone 5 manifold wich does allow thermosyphon , I plan to have 4x radiators, underfloor heating and calorifier attached. The diagram is missing the PRV and the pipes from the back boiler to the heating manifold will be in 28mm. My biggest worry is the thermosyphon safety as it is going to run to the heating manifold so i dont have any heat leak. Any input would be appreciated. Kind regards Brad I've linked the NRG zone let me know what you think to using this as I can't see any post speaking about this or any manifold. https://www.nrgawareness.com/product/nrg-zone-4-5-6-32-32-28/
  3. I'm very new to the boat would, I know very little. Any information would be helpful I'm an architect student and a design consultant. I had a friend of mine who has just brought a 12ft widebeam and it's between 50-60ft long, he asked me to design the interior for him. I was shocked at the space inside and after talking about how much the shell cost him and how much it costs to live on the water, I fell in love with the idea. I love small spaces, but i dislike narrow spaces, so a widebeam is perfect for me, but I don't see the point in having an overly long boat. I wanted to be informed or advised is there anything wrong or disadvantage of having a widebeam only 30ft long? My friend tells me that will be a maximum of 24ft living space. I have put this in a CAD programs and come up with a few designs. I believe I could easily live comfortable and happily within this space. I'm worried about electric and water consumption. I like to shower every day. I also pretty much spend all day working on my pc and laptop, I'm worried the tv/monitor will consume to much power. Any advice or any information will help. I don't plan of paying for mooring, I like the idea of traveling up and down a lock each week or two
  4. Hi everyone, I'm new in here an also in the boat world. I've recently bought a wide beam with my partner and now is time to build it inside. I have a couple of questions and perhaps you guys can help me. 1: I'd like to install a hatch but before to do so I'd like to know if I need permission and then it will be ok for the BSS and all this paperwork. 2: I don't like how calorifier works and I'd like to install a water heater boiler LPG room sealed from Forcali o Morco I think I they really good and safe but I don't know if the regulation allows to install it. somebody know if I can do it or if there are better options? Thank you so much for your help Cheers :)
  5. Hello all I am looking to get a new build sailaway boat and have had some quotes already, some very reasonable, some incredibly expensive. The company I am looking at is http://www.burscoughboatcompany.co.uk/. They have been runner ups/winners at the Crick show and have a good turnaround time. Is there anyone on this forum who would be interested in giving me a quote? I do have a more detailed spec but in a nutshell it is a 13m L X 3m W widebeam trad stern I am after with a minimum of a 65bhp engine (it will be on a marina off the tidal part of the thames). Let me know as want to get the project started as soon as really Hope to hear from all you boat builders, some of you may have heard from me already if operating a website. Regards Bryan
  6. Hello, I am new to boating and need advice about my first buy; I viewed a widebeam in mid July with the specifications listed below; I was about to have a survey done but got distracted by other boats; now about a month and a half later I am surprised to see that such boat is still available and hasnt been snapped up yet; I was thinking of having it surveyed now but the fact that a boat of that price and age hasnt been sold in 1.5 months makes me wonder what other potential buyers have been put off with Any advice gratefully received Regards Annalisa Price: £55,000 Designer: Paul Widdowson Builder: Allen Unwin Make: Paul Widdowson Model: 45 Widebeam Year constructed: 2010 Berths: 4 Engine : Barrus Shanks 35 HP (has done 2300 hours) Fuel type: Diesel Drive type: Shaft drive Length overall: 45' Beam: 10' Hull material: Steel Fuel capacity: 400 Litres Water capacity: 2500 Litres Walkthrough bathroom with cassette toilet and shower Multi fuel stove with back boiler providing heating to 2 radiators, gravity fed Hot water provided by calorifier or immersion heater. 8x6v 135ah batteries. 3kw pure sign wave sterling ch/inv.12 and 230v systems LED lighting Fully fitted kitchen including full size cooker, fridge and sink Washing machine
  7. Hi there, We have an Esse Montrose stove on our widebeam at the moment but as it won't stay lit overnight really need another. Unless theres a problem with the stove? The Flue is clear, not really sure what else would affect its staying power.. Anyway we think we need a bigger stove anyway and want a back bolier for 2-3 radiators. We have quite a few big windows. Was wondering what advice anyone might have on the subject. Thinking a Squirrel would be too small but I've read that other widebeams have them and its fine. Our boat interior length is about 56' (its a 68' with cruiser stern). Would be great to get a stove that's at the cheaper end of the scale but dont want to risk the same problem of it not staying in overnight. Thanks for reading
  8. Morning everyone, Have just completed purchase of our first boat. 56' x 12 built in 2006. I intend doing a reburbishment over the coming 6 months or so but really need advice. 1st - a generator ideal for the boat but initially to run my power tools inc a Dewalt table saw. 2nd (and most important) - PLEASE, can someone recommend roughly what I should fit for solar, batteries and panels, to cover most of our needs as liveaboard continuous cruisers.. Currently have a solid fuel stove and back boiler. Would like to install oil fired boiler. Power expectations are all the usual appliances but not dishwasher. Standard fridge freezer, washing machine, TV, 12v lighting, laptops, radio......hot water and heating would be superb even if only partial. I assume being a Widebeam, roof space isn't the main issue. I've read so much it's confusing. As we live in a cloudy part of th world and the cut is shady, would amorphous panels be the better choice? I've no idea about this stuff yet. Equipment required, set up plans, where to buy, what to buy and how much to buy- would all be very helpful. I'm sorry if this repeats a previous post, and I thank you all in advance. Cheers all.
  9. Hi everyone We are just going through the build process of our first boat, we are getting a semi fitted Sailaway and we know exactly what we are doing ourselves and what we are getting ready built. Everything that is except for the wood burning stove. We would like to do this ourselves and are well versed and very good at this type of building however neither of us have had experience fitting a wood burning stove before. We where hoping for some advice as to if we should take this on ourselves, which is something we would be keen to do, or if there we should pay for someone to install it, or ask the boat builders themselves to do it (at an additional cost obviously). Our may concern are obviously safety, but we are also interested to get an idea of cost as well as we can't seem to find a lot of information on this. Any advice appreciated Megan
  10. I'm looking at buying a 12ft widebeam hopefully next year. what i'm struggling to find is a map that shows the parts of the network that will take a 12ft boat I've been referring to this map http://newandusedboat.co.uk/canal-network-map.php But if I'm reading the Collins Nicholson guide right then what is stated as broad on the map still has 10ft wide locks. Is there a canal network map that shows what parts a 12ft wide beam will fit on. Also while I've been looking for possible marinas a map showing the marinas actual on the canals network map would also seem useful otherwise i find you have to keep trying to switch between canal map and google maps and try and match the two up then go to collins guide to check lock widths or other restrictions. Any help appreciated
  11. Early stages of now looking for a mooring I'm buying a widebeam so clearway need marinas as well as canals that will fit. looking for marinas that have residential mooring ideally something rural. Just looking for marina names as there doesn't seem to be a simple way of finding a list of marinas that offer residential as well as suitable for widebeam If people live on the marinas even better Thanks
  12. Hi all, I am looking for a canal boat holidays with widebeam boat instead of narrowboat. I have done some google search and seems like most companies only offer narrowboat. Can you recommend any widebeam boat holiday company? Is it quite difficult to operate widebeam? especially when going through a lock? Thanks. Cheers, Felix
  13. OK, hello to everyone I am looking for some advice. I am beginning to think that I will not be happy living on the cut around the Southeast and in London on anything other than a narrowboat, due to congestion. Of course, I would secretly really prefer the extra width of a widebeam, but I have lived on a narrowboat (and a short one at that), and I loved it at the time, and promised myself I would live on the water again if I got the chance. I was narrower myself in those days, admittedly. But I don't want to feel like a nuisance and I don't want to be a bigger than necessary contribution to making things worse in the waterways where I hope to make my home... I know that living on the waterways is sharing space with others, so the way I see it, what's good for everyone else will be good for me, in the bigger picture. A little info about me - the questions I've see asked of noobs to the forum like me: - Why do I want to continuous cruise? And why in London and the Southeast? I love London, but... More and more I feel like I would move away from London entirely now, whether a life afloat or on land, were it not for my mum being 80 and my dad died a couple of years back and I see her regularly and want to be within reach. No, it's not because I don't want to be too far away so I can save the batteries on my boat by doing the laundry at hers. That would just be a fringe benefit. Sorry. Pretend I didn't say that. Tragic. Having promised myself that one day I would live on a boat again, I now feel like a life on the cut could be great for me - I would not want to stay in London the whole time, I would really love going out on trips further afield. And I certainly would not be hoping to stay in very central and popular areas the whole time. I crave being able to be somewhere quieter and get away from everything... but I do need to be able to get back to everything, too! For now, I want to feel, broadly speaking, like I'm based in London (maybe it's because I'm a londoner...). As to why continuous cruising - well, two reasons really. I have always been a person with itchy feet, and the are itching quite a lot right now, but I don't want to go off far away (see above). The idea of a nomadic life appeals right now. That plus the money. I must confess. Even if I could find a residential mooring in London, I'd struggle to pay for it. But the more I look into CC'ing, the more I think I would really like to do it properly, and to cover some ground, and enjoy the life, not just the savings on the overpriced london moorings. I love boats and water and always have... I hope it's obvious that I do not intend - or even particularly want - to be in central and/or the most popular places all the time. I'd end up going through them, of course, and would enjoy that... If I found a place centrally to moor for a couple of weeks once in a blue moon, that would be nice, but it's not a requirement on my part. I work from home and with flexible hours, and would hope that would lessen the issues and pressures around the moving and mooring aspects. So - should I really be ruling widebeams out? I am kind of expecting the answer "yes" and I am persuading myself I will feel it's the right thing in the end. But, having said that, if I took the word "London" out of this, I would definitely prefer to live on a widebeam, I cannot deny it. Even though I do agree that, often, they can look a bit..... funny. I feel like asking this question as a first post I should be running for cover, but I hope I've explained myself enough to fill in the picture, and I have absolutely no doubt that you good folk will tell anything I missed out or stupid things I said (for which apologies in advance!)
