  1. Hello I'm thinking of setting up the software on a PC and pluggin my laptop into my Victron Multiplus to get at the configuration - has anyone tried this? It needs a USB/RJ45 convertor - the Vcitron retails at £50 but there are generic ones on Ebay for just a few pounds - is there really any difference? I know you can use the dip switches but has anyone "played" with the Victron software? Steve
  2. Hi All, I am just doing the sums on my electricity usage and requirements in order to choose the correct fridge, i want to make sure i am doing the correct maths on this. I have a Victron Quatro 12/3000/120 and am trying to work out what the "no-load consumption" (correct terminology? I mean when it its turned on, ready to power equipment but not powering anything) is. http://www.victronenergy.com/upload/documents/Datasheet-Quattro-3kVA-10kVA-EN.pdf From the link above I understand it might be 4 watts (search mode?) or 15 watts AES power (I cant work out what AES is and therefore don't know if it) or 15 watts. Can anyone help please? Thanks
  3. Hi all! I have a 240V/16A (shore power) coming into the boat. It goes through a Victron unit which controls the 3 leisure batteries (wired positive to positive) and 1 starter battery. I'm thinking of adding a solar panel to the boat. Normally, I would put the solar panel to the controller then to the first leisure battery. Would this confuse the Victron, or is that the done thing with Victron units? Thanks!
  4. I have been working on a series of four articles on Batteries and Battery monitors based on my experience researching them and fitting one on Floydtilla.co.uk They are now complete and can be read in the correct order at:- Part 1 – Battery Monitors Why I wanted one https://floydtilla.co.uk/2022/03/01/batteries-and-battery-monitors-part-1-why-we-needed-one/ Part 2 – Battery Selection https://floydtilla.co.uk/2022/03/07/batteries-and-battery-monitors-part-2-battery-selection/ Part 3 – State of Charge and Lead Acid Batteries https://floydtilla.co.uk/2022/03/14/batteries-and-battery-monitors-part-3-the-state-of-charge-soc-calculation/ Part 4 – Shunts and Monitors https://floydtilla.co.uk/2022/03/21/batteries-and-battery-monitors-part-4-battery-monitor-the-shunt/ I hope you find this useful Thanks David
  5. Hi! I have two 12V 230Ah domestic batteries with two large big solar panels, a beta marine 43 that seems to charge the battery well (I’m pretty sure it’s not an alternator problem). The issue is that my batteries seem to drain SO quickly. Just charging phones the level sits around 12.9ish but I can put my lights on (LED) for literally 3 minutes and my voltage will go from 12.9 to 12.2. I don’t have an inverter, I use a plug in 12v inverter to charge my laptop and I cant use that at all without the engine on. I turned my 12v fridge off at the end of summer as the days got shorter but as the suns put more the battery health seems worse than ever! The batteries are 6 years old but maybe they’re just old but I’m not sure. Any comments would be incredibly appreciated! And any advice on maintaining battery health ❤️
  6. Hi All Very Quick question :- We have a Victron 12/2500/230 Multiplus and a bank of 4 110aH Domestic batteries charger / Inverter All at slightly different voltage levels due to old school wiring practices :-) If I do the flick of the toggle to give them a "Forced Absorb" charge. My question is will this do an equalisation charge. or Am I better singly changing them all remotly and seperately ? Reason for asking is they will be rewired sensibly in not to distant future and would like to start off in a know state Thank you for reading Andy
  7. Hi All Looking to install a Cyrix-ct-230A Battery Combiner (VSR) My question is .... :- I have seen many installs using just the one Alternator and Two battery banks, but non with two (I have one 70A Alternator for Starter Battery and another 70A for domestic bank) So is it possible at all. Just thinking of using my spare power from starter alernator to help keep domestics topped up in winter months :-) Thank you Andy
  8. This weeks oddity from the towpath. A boater has a 24v Victron inverter charger combination. He can get power either from his shore line or the inverter. It charges his batteries when connected to the shore. The inverter shuts down then as it should. It has worked fine for a long while. The one night whilst on the shore line it starts to hum loudly and gets hot. Unplugging the shore line it drops to being an inverter only and shuts up. He now has power. But the shore line will no longer power the boat when it is in charge only mode. Most odd, worried that it sounds expensive. Disconnecting shore line and switching everything to off, reconnect and everything is working normally again ! Any ideas what causes this tantrum?
  9. Hi Everyone, I am hoping you might be able to help. I am having a 60ft semi-trad josher built for initial use as a leisure boat but with a view to being a 5day a week live aboard within a year of splashing her. I am a bit of a geek and really like the remote monitoring capabilities of the Victron kit via the Cerbo GX but am really not sure whether the following is the full electrical supply and distribution spec or if I have missed anything? I am also thoroughly confused at to whether a travel power unit is entirely necessary given I will have dual alternators on the Beta 50 including a 175amp domestic alternator as well as a starter battery alternator. I really would appreciate a quick review of the following or if someone is electriclly minded a wiring diagram???: Beta marine 50 with dual alternator and remote oil filter as extra (+ other adaptions we discussed) 3.5 KVA travel power (unsure if this is required given the spec below would appreciate some advice) 4 x Victron Lithium LiFePO4 12V - 100Ah battery with Bluetooth 3 x Victron Smart Battery Sense - 10 Meter Range 1 x 12v load dump battery (lead acid) 1x 12v starter battery (lead acid) 1 or 2 bow batteries for bow thruster (lead acid) Victron smartshunt Victron Lynx Distributor x 1 Victron Lynx Power In x 2 Bluesea isolator main switches 3 x Vicron VE.Can resistive tank sender adapter (1x blackwater, 1x fuel, 1x water tank) Victron Multiplus Inverter Charger 12/3000/120-50 Victron Cerbo GX Victron GX Touch 50 screen Victon dc-dc convertor (unsure if required or sizing. If installed is a dump load battery required?) 10. Hello, First post here so please be gentle! haha OK, I'm literally weeks away from getting my 60' sail away. I will be a continuous cruiser liveaboard and regularly moving around the canal and river waterways. Engine is a Canalline 42 with 1x 50A and 1x 175A Alternators. I'm planning on getting a Webasto water heater/boiler too to compliment multi fuel stove. I have done some sums and require around 120Ah a day for things like, 12v fridge, pumps, boiler, laptop, TV, lighting, phone charging etc. (Actual is 80Ah but I wanted a good amount of wiggle room). I'm planning on filling my roof with solar and would like to use Victron equipment (apart from solar). I'm planning on: 5x 285w Monocrystalline Solar Panels totalling: 1425w (It has an approx 42' cabin / roof space) 1x Victron SmartSolar 100A MPPT Solar Charge Controller 1x Victron BMV-700 Battery Monitor 1x Victron SmartSolar LCD display 1x Victron Multiplus 1600VA Inverter 70A charger 16A relay 12V I'd like to use solar as much as possible to power my needs but haven't decided upon batteries just yet. I'd like your comments on qty and type of batteries I'd need to keep everything tip-top, if I'll need a generator for the winter months (likely Honda EU2.0i using LPG). Is the above all too overkill or will I struggle in the depths of dark winter? I would like to use a washing machine every so often but if batteries would get hammered I can use Generator for that. (obviously not on hot washes). I'll be getting an electrician to do the install (apart from solar panels on the roof). Thanks Jono
  11. Hi there, I've got one of these (see pic below), but want to change it for something that can take more solar panels and is a bit more modern. We use it with a 60A alternator, and 1x 100w solar panel (although I think this regulator can only take up to 60w solar. We don't have a wind turbine. It only seems to produce a max of 14.1v when the engine's on (even after hours of cruising) and recently has been hitting 15.1v through the solar panel - which seems a bit high?! I'd like to replace it with a charger suitable for the alternator, and maybe solar as well. Do I need to get a separate charger for the alternator, then an MPPT charger for the solar panel (I also want to add either one or two 175w solar panel to make 275w or 375w in total). We have 3x 110ah leisure batteries and a starter battery, and a Sterling 1600W pure sine wave inverter that is yet to be hooked up.. Any advice, brands, models to watch out for etc, most welcome! Cheers, Alistair
  12. Hi all, We have a Multi Plus 12v 3000va 120amp inverter which has stopped working (unit is 4 years old) When I unplug / turn off the shore power to our boat, the inverter fails kick in to supply 240v power (It is on) I have checked the 12v terminals going in to the inverter which are fine (12.8v), but it seems the inverter wont switch and turn on (no LEDs on the inverter side on panel either). Perhaps there is an internal fuse that needs replacing? - I've had the cover off, and cant see anything, Its worked fine until now, (and works fine on shore power) I did trip the power recently due to a faulty set of fairy lights, perhaps that's fried something? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
  13. Just a stab at kicking some life into ailing batteries, as I have the rare luxury of shore power tonite. I found how to make the Victron 3000 multiplus go into equalisation mode video here Anyway - it's up at 15.2v, and I'm wondering how long I dare leave it on? (Or perhaps it times out, in which case how much more I might force it to happen). I don't have a temperature sensor on the batteries, and certainly cant be arsed getting under there to check on them. Anyway... off to do some more laundry and anything else that consumes power... Edit to say - an hour later and its back to normal mode.
  14. I wanted to start looking at the settings on my Victron 3000 phoenix multiplus. (get that equalisation charge a bit higher!) I didn't think it had VE capability because it doesn't specifically mention it on the case, but after investigating, I now believe that it does. Which is handy, as trying to set anything with the dil switch on the pcb is a cryptic process indeed. So, I have 2xethernet sockets on my pcb. It appears that one has to connect a cable from that, to a special black adapter called an MK2b, then on to the pc serial com(?). Or looking on ebay http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Victron-VE-Direct-to-USB-Interface/272760914869?epid=6005290134&hash=item3f81d143b5:g:wQQAAOSwLdBaBBYH there seems to be a different thing that goes direct to usb but the other end doesn't look like an ethernet connection. TOTALLY confused, so if someone could kindly put me straight I'd be grateful. My first thought is that an ethernet to ethernet cable would make sens - but I remember when connecting pc's that way you need to get one with crossed over wires (I do have one somewhere). The serial number on the chip on the pcb is 1809149.HEX which doesn't quite correspond to anything on the Victron document I found online https://www.victronenergy.com/upload/documents/Manual-A-Guide-to-VEConfigure-EN.pdf Of course, the next hurdle is that I normally use Ubuntu
  15. Yet another query, sorry folks. after almost buying a rubbish inverter, we took all the lovely advice off you guys and got a victron inverter/charger. For a few days whilst cruising we managed to get some use out of it, but feel like the leisure batteries may have seen the end of their days. Our issue now is though that whilst connected to mains electricity we still have no use in our inverter/charger. Like, nil puit! Have we bought something dodgy? Are we still that novice that we haven’t sussed it out? Can anyone (in simple language) spell it out to us? cheers in advance!
  16. Hi All Simple questions really, Has any body used a Victron Interface MK2 USB to link their Laptop with appropriate software to a Mastervolt inverter/charger? If so, was it successful? Regards Graham
  17. I have been successfully using my Victron 3000 multiplus inverter for nearly a year now, but have a couple of questions. I'm unclear about the earthing arrangement - the manual seems to say that it has a relay that takes care of things (my words) but I notice from the previous owner there is a snipped off earth wire and I'm wondering if I should be attaching it somewhere. I have mains hook up, incoming to the unit (only been used once) then the output 230v goes to a consumer unit and onto the ring. My recent concern comes as as I consider connecting a generator via the ac hook up. (And wondering about its earthing). Also - I can't find it in the manual but is there a special means for connecting an immersion heater in such a way that it is only supplied with ac if the hook up is active (ie so as not to kill the batteries in five minutes flat!). I intend to use the genny to heat water via 230v as well as charge batteries, to further save engine run time - I don't know how effective it will be with a 1kw element in an 85litre cylinder though. thank you
  18. Hello, I've owned my very first narrowboat for exactly a month so far so am a real newbie. I have: Sailaway 60' 4x 110Ah Lead Acid wet leisure batteries Canal Line 42 engine with 175A Alternator and a 50A for engine battery Victron Multiplus 12/3000/120 Victron BMV-700 I've wired up the batteries so that everything is via the shunt with nothing connected the battery side neg. My question is what sort of amperage should I expect to get from the alternator? I realise you should take every reading from Victron BMV-700 with a pinch of salt but am getting the following readings: Currently, Battery at 91% Battery 13.78v 28.10A is being put in from the alternator. I've seen the amps as high as 57A but never higher. I'm trying not to let the batteries get too empty as they are only a month old. I have set the BMV-700 up as best as I can using the Bluetooth settings tab so it's not at default settings. Just curious really as I'd have thought a 175A Alternator would pump more out. I realise the more already charged the battery bank is the less amps needed to fully charge - that could well be it. Thanks Jono
  19. I have no technical expertise whatsoever, so please be gentle with me! I'm attaching pictures of this in case it helps. I am a newbie liveaboard narrowboater in a marina in Milton Keynes. It's a great boat but for some reason the previous owners loved their shore power, so although I have 12v lights and pumps, the fridge, tv etc are all 240v. Worse, I recently discovered that the Morso Squirrel stove back boiler also relies on 240v for it's pump. No 240v = no heating as I can't operate the stove without the pump running. For the last three months my Victron Phoenix Multiplus 12/3000/120 unit has been left switched to 'on' and happily showing 'Mains' and 'Float' lights on the left 'Charger' side of the front panel, and 'inverter' only away from the dock, as you'd expect. Yesterday, something tripped out the breaker on the power post my boat plugs into, and the breaker in the main shore power switch box (? - it's labelled 'Mains' and looks like a domestic fuse box, see attached.) I was not running anything on mains at the time. The 'mains' box has a green light labelled 'Mains On' up top, and inside the fuse panel, red and green Lights, and breakers labelled Power In, Power Out and Immersion heater. Labels inside the box say : 'Red on reverse polarity' and 'Green mains on'. My recollection from earlier days when everything was working fine was that the red light was usually on. I assume that flipping the breakers up is turning them on? As is the case for the power post I connect to. The Victron panel is split between Charger and Inverter sides. In normal operation, I leave the central switch to 'on', and the Charger side shows Mains On and Float. In this state, all the 240v sockets are live, pulling power from the shore. The Inverter side only comes on when I disconnect shore power to cruise, as you'd expect. On resetting the post breaker, I discovered that as soon as I attempted to also reset the breaker, the Victron flipped from the 'On' setting, where it usually displayed mains in and 'float', to 'Inverter' with no signs of life from the 'Charger' side of the Victron front panel, and the post breaker tripped again. Here's the thing: if I switch mains power to the boat off using the 'Power Out' breaker in my mains box, the Victron shows mains input and starts charging as normal (but there is obviously no power to my 240v sockets.) If I switch the Power Out breaker on, it immediately trips the shore post breaker, and mains power shuts off at the mains box (judging from the light going out up top). Then the inverter kicks in, and all my 240v sockets work, but are doing so obviously by pulling power from the battery bank to do it, which, worse, are receiving no top up charge, so this is not sustainable. My 12v gear (lights, pumps etc) are unaffected by any of this, and continue to work in either state. From this I deduce it is something to do with the automatic switching from mains to battery power by the Victron, or between the mains box and the Victron, caused when I attempt to supply mains power to the boat. Do you have any suggestions, or a contact for a service engineer in the Milton Keynes I can pay to resolve the issue? As I live on the boat and can't operate my fridge or my heating without mains power, this is quite urgent.
