  1. Hi all, My partner and I are looking for a narrow boat which we plan to live on around the Bristol/Bath area. We're after surveyor recommendations as we're on a tight budget so can't afford to be caught out with buying a boat that needs lots of over-plating and drains all our funds that we've put aside to do an internal re-fit! We're looking at project narrow boats which need some or all of the interior fitting out. Can anyone recommend a good surveyor to us please? we are interested in a few boats which are in different places round the country so it would need to be someone who will be wiling to travel. Also we are looking for hard-standing in the Bristol area where we can do any work to the interior that is needed- does anyone know of anywhere with space and which allows full-time access? thanks in advance, Imogen and Staszek
  2. I'm looking for a good surveyor for a hull inspection but I want someone who can give me the nod or otherwise on the day. I don't want to wait for them to do their paperwork. Maybe I'm expecting too much but if the boat passes then I intend buying her and keeping her out for the winter.
  3. Yesterday I put the deposit down on a boat that was beautifully cared for... until the progress of time sadly brought it to need selling. I need to get it surveyed and check that I'm not letting myself in for more than I expected! The main thing I need to know is how to get a straight, competent and thorough survey (south Midlands / near Napton Junction). Rust in & out is an obvious concern. The hull has not been blacked since 2013 and the stern bay shows hull rust all round the stern gland area. It is on a shoreline with galvanic isolator, and I suspect has been for years. I could find no access to the main bilge, so I might assume the inside of the hull has been unattended for 10+ years. I didn't see any sign of persistent condensation/damp, which is encouraging. Groping underwater, I think I found an anode - sharp and not much of it left. There is also a lot of growth on the hull, also feeling sharp. The broker told me I can't be present while the surveyor works (and suggested meeting afterwards), because COVID and because I'm not insured to go into their dry dock. This was an unpleasant surprise for me, because I was expecting to be alongside asking a lot of questions. Am I constrained to use their dry dock, or could I find a more permissive one? Being uninsured does not bother me, I think it's an exclusion. Do any surveyors do video chat / livestreaming while working? Is the broker likely to be actively hiding a serious problem by these constraints? If so, what are the biggest to consider and how could I uncover them? I do expect to do serious refitting work on the boat, including (eventually & slowly) new floor, but I'm not in a position to do it all at once. It has to be a steady project in stages and I need to liveaboard while I'm doing it. I'm sure this is not a new question and on this occasion I confess to jumping in with the deposit before retro-lurking CWDF for advice on surveyors. ?
  4. Hi all, We're getting our boat out of the water soon for blacking and plan to get a survey at the same time. Do you have any suggestions of reasonably priced surveyors who work around Stanstead Abbots where we'll be in the marina. Thanks, Lucy
  5. Hello folks! I've been looking at these surveyors for y survey: Stephen Hands Michael Clarke Peter Tindall Ricky Tropman Jonathan Leask Iain Jones Any experience with them? Any other recommendations for the midlands? What can I expect from the survey? How long should it take? And cost for a 40 feet boat? Thanks a lot! Mattes
  6. So as the title says my brother and I have unexpectedly become a boat owners as earlier this year my father died, as he was living on a narrow boat at the time of his death its part of his estate that we are having to deal with, aside from the internal fit out that needs compleating/redoing as it is only half done as well as being used as a workshop, we know that the bottom needs re-blacking and repaint of the whole boat, the tentative plan at the moment is for my brother and I to do as much of the work ourselves, with this in mind I have been looking into what we would need to do now and further do the line. After having looked at the options and I believe getting it on too long term hardstanding would suit our needs best with regards to cost/timeline. so I'm looking for some recommendations for hard standing around Bradford on Avon or as near as possible as neither of us has a car. Also before anything is decided about what we're going to do I'd like to get a surveyor out to go over the whole boat to find out if there are any problems and to also value the boat; as for if we decide to sell it as a project, so recommendations for local surveyors would be good thanks. as this has turned into rather a rambling post let me bullet point the important questions 1. recommendations for hard standing in or as near to Bradford on Avon as possible? and local crane/transporters if needed ? 2. recommendations for surveyors in the Wiltshire area? 3. any other advice that might be needed? thanks hanna
  7. Having lurked here forever, I finally have a question which the search function and accumulated years of discussion can't answer... My girlfriend is looking at buying a narrowboat currently moored near Droitwich. Can anyone recommend a surveyor who covers that area? Thanks! [edited for dodgy typing]
  8. Hi everyone, I'm looking to buy a boat that was recently surveyed in London. It was surveyed by a previous potential buyer who decided not to go ahead following the survey - so I'm already cautious and not rushing into anything. I'm looking to get the boat surveyed myself and the previous potential buyer has kindly offered to let me see the survey in the meantime. However, they have provided the survey via the seller who is not letting me view it before meeting with him to discuss it together - all sounding alarm bells to me! He has suggested that the surveyor in question is not well trusted in London, and has in-fact been black listed by many and can often make the boat appear to be in worse repair than it actually is. I don't want to name names to cause any problems but would appreciate your advice. Are there any surveyors in London you would highly recommend, or would you avoid and why? Thanks.
  9. Hi all, My partner and I are trying to join in the amazing world of narrowboats, we've found one we love and want to buy but are having difficulty finding a surveyor that is recommended and available. We've tried Balliol as there seems to be a lot of recommendations for him on the site but he's not available unfortunately at the same time as the marina has dry-docking availability and sadly he said anyone he'd recommend is also fully booked right now, guess it's a busy year for boat buying! If anyone else knows of someone who is either in the area already or okay travelling out to Worcestershire way and excellent with surveys that please let us know, it is our first time so we want to make sure we get someone who is both friendly and willing to take the time to go over everything with us as well as thorough enough to ensure they won't miss anything. This is the biggest venture of our lives to date and we're really quite nervous about the whole thing so really want someone great. Thanks for any help you can offer
  10. Hello! Can anyone recommend any boat surveyors in the Bath/Trowbridge area? Personal recommendations are the best! Thanks alot Amber
  11. I'm looking for recommendations for a surveyor who works in East Yorkshire. (For a hull survey of a Sheffield-sized boat.)
