  1. Hi, I'm an absolute beginner, and know almost nothing about engines so please forgive my ignorance! So I've lived on my 50ft narrowboat (built 1989) for a year now and over the last couple of months the engine has been emitting lots of smoke, its sort of greyish-blue. Also, there is a large amount of (what I think is) oil leaking out. Finally when I turn the engine on to higher revs after a few minutes a loud banging noise starts, sounds like metal banging on to metal, which is disturbing so I turn the engine right down again which makes the noise stop. I think that all these issues are related, like maybe the oil leak is making the engine smoke and the lack of oil is somehow making the engine make the noise. What irritates me is that I took it in to a marina to have it serviced recently and all they said on the matter is that Listers are prone to do this, without any further explanation. I'd be really grateful if someone had any insights into it. As I said, I know almost nothing about engines so any help is much appreciated! Thanks! D
  2. Hi I wonder if anyone can help despite the vague description that will follow... I cruised for about an hour a few days ago without any trouble at all. This evening I switched the engine on, it started fine but after few seconds it stopped, and then white smoke come up from the area encircled on the photo. Not nice. I don't want to try starting it again as I don't really like white smoke coming out from where no smoke of any colour should be coming out of. There's nothing charred, no marks and no leaks that I could see. Any ideas? Video not of while it was smoking, just to better show the area in question: Thanks
  3. Hi, I have a problem with my chimney and wondered if anyone else had the same problem. It's a wide-beam (well, 11ft) and we have a squirrel stove. We burn mixed fuel - wood and coal - but I have noticed that particularly in the last few months there has been excessive smoke coming from the chimney output on the roof. This is causing some problems in terms of neighbours etc, and it sometimes wafts through our vents/windows - but also is just a little worrying. Could there be something vital in our chimney that has disintegrated? We notice this most when we have just lit the fire - as could be expected - but to be honest it doesn't really settle down. Just think white smoke. Does anyone have any idea what this could be? Thanks so much as always
  4. Hi. now that the temperatures are beginning to drop and the days and getting shorter (how bleak) i have tried out the Efel multi-fuel burning a couple of time on our new-ish narrow boat. to cut to the chase, it smokes pretty much from every crack and orifice (!), until a point about an hour down the line when it is hot and burning coal when it seems to become more efficient. This burner is tall and slender (!) with a small door down below (!) and a slightly larger one at the top, through which you can deliver fuel in whichever form you are using. the flue comes out of the back on the burner, around a third of the way down the upright cylinder of the main body. at the moment smokes leaks heavily out of the top between the body and the hot plate, between the seals of the upper door, and anywhere else it can manage in the upper third of the burner. Is this burner just a shit design?? I've not seen one of these before and can't even find a picture on google. I can see how i might be able to replace the seal on the upper door (some sort of fire-rope type stuff), but how do i totally seal all cracks, gaps and holes??? Does anyone have experience of this burner?? Can it be sorted?? It actually works well after a couple of hours, but by then we have been sitting in a very smoky boat for 2 hours!! Incidentally, despite the different design (tall and thin, opposed to short and squat) it does seem quite useful to be able to fill out from the upper door, so if we can seal it then maybe it will ultimately be a great thing. Anyone? cheers!!!
  5. Above the throat plate, at the bottom of the flue, inside my Morso Squirrel, I have a rounded cup bolted to the roof of the stove. This seems to restrict the removal of smoke which often comes back into the room in abundance when adding fuel. The flue is clean. Some of these fires seem to have the cup fitted whilst others don't. Presumably it's there for a reason... should it aid draw? Would it help the smoke-in-the-room issue if I removed it? I normally burn 'smokeless' fuel (which plainly isn't!).
  6. So.. for the last few days our engine has been kicking out white fumes from the exhaust and seeming much noisier from it too. So thinking it could be water in the fuel I drained both fuel filters and continued on our way. The smoke returned 15mins into cruising and even spat out a little black when going astern into the locks. So We gave her a rest. By the morning our starter battery didn't have enough charge to turn over the engine and we had to charge it from our genny. Even tho we have the starter isolated all the time when not running? The battery isolator is new from amazon? But we remove the key so surely that cannot drain it? today we charged the starter off the genny and eventually got her started. She blew white smoke for the hour and a half cruise to bedwyn and we stopped. We decided we could try checking the valve clearances, not easy as we couldn't find the tdc for each valve. But then after only 2 hours moored the engine again wouldn't tick over! And each time the key turned in the ignition you could watch the battery voltage dropping on the starter and even on the leisure battery readers. we are baffled! I am guessing they are two separate issues, the smoke and the batteries draining. But it feels so coincidental to all happen at once. any advice or ideas would be great. Or anyone near bedwyn on the k&a willing to help would be great too!
  7. So about 3 months ago the nightmare began. The engine’s cooling system has always been a bit leaky but that’s never been an issue, I would top up the bowman heat exchanger before cruising and everything was fine. until one day it wasn’t. (as an aside the calorifier never worked either) The inevitable happened and the coolant must have gotten too low, steam, hissing and dead. Head gasket was my first thought. But i thought, I’ll give some other things a try before I start dismantling the engine. I bled the fuel lines and it went! All good! How Weird! 500m down the canal and a slow dying of the engine began, it spluttered dead and we had to catch a boat to pull ourselves to the towpath. Milky oil, not starting at all. We took off the engine head, which I had never done before and it was pretty nasty looking. Seemed obvious, head gasket had gone due to cooling. so we put it all back together, what a tough one. Nothing quite wanted to go back the same way, we had leaky fuel lines, broken bolts, dodgy threads and eventually had to make a change to the fuel return system as a spill rail bolt on the cav filter was near impossible to source. This was the fuel return line that before went from the injectors to the top of the cav filter and then also back to the tank through a double banjo bolt setup. The change we had to make was to put the return back to the cav through a single banjo bolt as that’s all we could find that would fit the large diameter of the filters’ hole and just not bother with the tank return. I replaced the leaky rubber ends of the bowman head exchanger and tightened up any seals that dripped water before and that was all sorted too. After this final problem we got it to fire! There was tears and everyone, me, my partner and the mechanic we hired was overjoyed at this. It was quick to start especially due to the cold weather. And we thought the headache was over. All good, we said goodbye to the mechanic and had a drink to celebrate. The next day we fired her up, what a lovely sound it was. But after about 10 minutes of running I heard a tick sound come from cylinder 4. Which I assumed was just a misfire maybe. But it seemed to then cause a consistent loud ticking and puffs of compressed air from just below the glowplug on cylinder 4. I thought maybe it was a bad glowplug and we had made it have a dodgy seal when we had the engine head off. So I replaced all 4 glowplugs and tried it again. Still ticking and now I notice all the white smoke coming from the exhaust. My heart sank. We are trying to stay positive as it’s been a tough winter without power, being able to move and finances taking a huge hit. I check the oil and it’s dirty and milky, but not as milky as the first time. but the engine seems to run okay. i have checked the tappets and push rods, nothing is visibly broken. I doubt it’s the head gasket again as we barely ran it before it did this, it couldn’t have overheated. Surely not. It seems like maybe a seal somewhere is bad. Or something to do with timing maybe? I’m totally lost as to what has happened. Any ideas? I’ll add some pictures and video links to this thread ASAP. -Matthew
