Hi, Anyone with experience of working with boat engines please can we have some advice?! Have just bought a narrowboat and trying to work out if we need to replace the engine or if its repairable- I've attached a photo below of the problem- it has a hole in the crank casing. If it needs replacing does anyone know where we can source a suitable engine for a 57' on a tight budget. Seen calcutt prices and theyre way out of our league. Thanks for your help, Imogen and Staszek

Hi I want to replace all of the Vetus No Smell pipes on my black tank (because of course they stink). It seems like rigid solvent waste pipes are the way to go. As I am a complete beginner I was wondering if anyone had any photos of rigid pipe installations on their tanks so I can see how it is done and see also how the pipes should connect to the tank. Any info is welcome. Many thanks

Just found out today that my BMC 1.5 could cost thousands to repair... The chap could only have a quick look at it, but there's a major knocking noise coming from somewhere and it will only operate at very low load. Very smokey, etc. He can't get to having a proper look at it until next month, but he reckons it could cost thousands to repair... With me not having thousands, I was wondering what my other options are? It might be considering getting hold of a replacement engine - so would I have to replace it with another BMC 1.5 or can something else go in? And where's a good place to get hold of a decent used engine at a reasonable price? Thank you, James

Hi All After nearly 8 years my Vetus stern gland has started to leak. I've tried adding more grease but it continues it dribble. Does anyone out there have experience of replacing the seal? I have been told once that it can be done without dry docking, but I'm not sure about trying that without further information/confirmation. From looking at it you would have to push the prop shaft back into the rudder to give clearance for the seal to come off the end. This concerns me for leakage reasons. Help/advice please. Bob

This week's irritating breakdown is a split that's just appeared in the plastic pipe between the stern-gland greaser and the stern gland. What sort of pipe should I be looking for as a replacement? How are the connections done? They look like compression fittings, can a make a temporary fix by shortening the pipe, or will I need a new olive for that? For the permanent fix, would it be better to use copper pipe. I've a suitable length offcut of 3/8" thick-wall gas pipe. I wonder if that would fit? MP.

Does anyone know where I can get this part from for my BMC 1.5... ...it's a rubber, corner part on the cooling system that connects the header tank to the pipe than goes down to the radiator. My existing one has just split. And I've tried AMC but they don't do it cos it's not part of the engine... Thanks in advance!

Hi, I bought a collingwood sailaway in February and have been cruising in it every two weeks since then. I discovered yesterday that the dripless shaft seal is leaking. It isnt just dripping but a significant trickle of water is coming in. I though the jubilee clips might need tightening so I tried this but it made it worse. Has anyone replaced one of these before? And if so can it be done in the water, I have seen videos where people in yachts do it in teh water with the aid of a greased rag. I was thinking of a greased rag around the outside and then another on the inside as I swap teh seals over? I'm after some guidance please, I really dont want to take the boat out of the water if i can help it and ideally would do the work myself. Also, any brands of shaft seal that you would recommend, ideally someone I can have a chat with on the phone about the installation! Any help would be appreciated, I realise that Collingwood should probably correct this but I havent the time nor inclination to chase them about it I just want it fixed! I have attached a picture of the leaking seal. Many thanks, Will
