  1. Has anyone fitted a spin on filter adapter to the Tecalemit filter head fitted to an Armstrong? There are a lot of adapters made for various Tecalemit filters fitted to various engines in the 1950s/60s, but I havn't yet found a match for that fitted to the Armstrong. The part no on my filter head is 'fa 2009/102', 'element fg236' I am the process of trying to sort out if Flexolite make an adapter that will fit, but it's always worth asking here too! thanks
  2. My Isuzu 42 will need a service soon (250 hrs) so oil and fuel filters are required. Apparently they are the same for the 25, 35 and 55 hp models, so does anyone with one of these engines know a good a source? OEM parts are expensive so I'm hoping there are decent alternatives available. I have done a search without much success (the posts I have found are confusing for a mere numpty), and I don't want to end up with parts that either won't fit or are sub-standard. The OEM part references are 894456-7412 (oil filter) and 897172-5491 (fuel filter). The air filter is 100066-4LS although I don't need one for this service. Any websites or suppliers in the East Midlands (Ashby or Tamworth area) would be appreciated.
  3. The ongoing battle between previous bodges, dodgy reconditioners (Avoid Bradford Grinders, they charge handsomely for work they don't do (I allege)) and me is, hopefully, coming close to wherever we are now, (I'm reluctant to say end, as I'm learning it ain't over til the fat BMC purrs). The bearings were down to copper, the piston rings had gaps that could be measured in mm, the valve guides were worn excessively and two valves had wear ridges. All the above has now been sorted, though I'm waiting for the head to come back and there are just a couple more things which I'd like to put right before firing up. First thing is the pulley alignment, I've bought a new engine water pump. The old one looks ok and measures within tolerance but I wanted to rule out that this was the cause of overheating. I thought my luck was in when I found a new old stock water pump at autojumble for 20.00, however when attempting to fit the old pulley, I discovered a couple of quirks. The pump was a three hole 60mm job, the new pump was a three hole 60mm job but the pulley was a modified four hole and there was a large brass nut acting as a spacer behind the pulley. That wouldn't have mattered if the pulley boss was the same size, however the new pump boss is a lot bigger diameter. There was no way it was going to fit. So, after a trip to Calcutt's yesterday and a long chat with them, I walked out with a new four hole water pump, the old pulley and a new oil filter (more about that later). They kept my new old stock pump and my original pump in exchange for a discount. So, with the new pump in place I bolted the old pulley on and discovered there is no way it will line up with the crank pulley and I left my "no longer needed" spacer nut behind at Calcutts I'd noticed the alternator has been spaced forward to line up with the other pulleys, but presumed it was because a dynamo had originally been fitted. However, it now seems logical that, if two pulleys needed spacing forward, the problem is actually with the third pulley... The problem is, I don't think it's possible to position the crank pulley further back. It looks to me as though it would: 1. foul the timing chain cover, 2. It is, I think already hard up against the timing gear cog which is fully home. Is it possible that the cover and crank pulley are from another application or do they normally need spacing out? The oil filter. On removing the oil filter housing, I discovered it was empty! Well, that's not quite true, it had some sludgy oil with lumps in it, but no filter. Annoyingly, I chose not to buy a spin on filter conversion kit while I was at Calcutts as; I'm skint, way over budget at the moment and that, I thought, could wait til the next oil change. I assume there should be a spring and plate in there to hold the filter in place. Does anyone have a spare or dimensions, or indeed, a spin on conversion going cheap. I'll try and upload some pictures to help explain it clearer than my rambling does. Thanks in advance Robert
  4. I Went to do the 250hr oil and oil filter change on our Beta 38 ... and discover I have no oil filters. (I have two fuel filters, an air filter but not the usual couple of oil filters aboard.) We're just leaving Newbury on the K&A, and both the usually well-stocked Greenham Island Marina and main motor factor place are closed until further notice, and fuel boat Ozzie doesn't stock filters (too many different types) - so no oil filters available. I have enough fresh oil, and reasoned I could just drain out the old and replace with the new and re-use the old oil filter. Then I wondered about cleaning the old oil filter with white spirit, dry it well, and re-use it. Is this daft, or a good idea? Anybody else done this?
  5. Does anyone know where to buy parts for lister letter canal star
  6. After getting regularly ripped off for consumables (oil/air filters and oil etc) I have finally been trying to find reliable alternative sources. I had a stroke of luck at a chandlers -they sold me an equivalent oil filter, by a company called MANN. So now I have a "regular" part number I can offer to car shops/factors etc. It was "only" £9.50 so I got two, but have since found that Eurocarparts stock them for a fiver (on offer but aren't they always). That's good because there are plenty of those places around. I didn't have any luck with the air filter yet though and the best I could do was £15 on line (ouch!). But when that gets to me hopefully it will reveal an equivalent part number that can be gotten hold of more easily or at least cross referenced. Last thing really is oil - almost non existent - even on google - 15/40 api cc. All I could find was Morris for about £26/5l. I'd like to do a bit better. Thought I'd cracked it today in Wilko - mineral oil 20/50 cc and only £15. So close. This is for a canaline 42 - if anyone is interested the oil filter is W914/26
  7. I seem to have trouble sourcing basic engine service parts - typically ordering at Chandlers with lengthy delays and high prices. Can anyone advise either for an online place or good local (I'm in Rickmansworth at the moment) supplier? Should I try to source parts from motor factors or places such as local car shops/halfords? I'm never quite sure about oil, often being offered oils slightly different in spec to what the book recommends. I feel like I haven't nailed a good steady supply of correct items, it must be simple surely? thanks
