  1. Hi, I'm in the process of buying my first narrowboat to live aboard and have viewed a really nice boat. My only concern with the boat is the engine running hours as it's an ex hire boat. The engine is a Beta 35 with almost 12,000 hours, it was serviced a year ago and had new filters and belts but that's the only engine history I can get at the moment. Should this be a concern or is 12,000 hours not to much of a problem if the engine starts and runs well? Thanks
  2. I'm very new to the boat would, I know very little. Any information would be helpful I'm an architect student and a design consultant. I had a friend of mine who has just brought a 12ft widebeam and it's between 50-60ft long, he asked me to design the interior for him. I was shocked at the space inside and after talking about how much the shell cost him and how much it costs to live on the water, I fell in love with the idea. I love small spaces, but i dislike narrow spaces, so a widebeam is perfect for me, but I don't see the point in having an overly long boat. I wanted to be informed or advised is there anything wrong or disadvantage of having a widebeam only 30ft long? My friend tells me that will be a maximum of 24ft living space. I have put this in a CAD programs and come up with a few designs. I believe I could easily live comfortable and happily within this space. I'm worried about electric and water consumption. I like to shower every day. I also pretty much spend all day working on my pc and laptop, I'm worried the tv/monitor will consume to much power. Any advice or any information will help. I don't plan of paying for mooring, I like the idea of traveling up and down a lock each week or two

Hoping someone will be able to help us..... We are looking at hiring a boat for our first small break away which we hope will be the first of many. We are looking for somewhere not too far to travel from the south of England (West Sussex) we would like a lovely canal with lots of bits and bobs to see with a few bridges and locks to navigate through also would love to do a via duct. We will be needing a couple of boats as there is a few us. Any recommendations would be great. Thank you in advance Jake and Family
  4. Hello, So I'm thinking of buying my first canal boat, and I'm a self confessed newbie and would really appreciate any advice. My reason for buying is I grew up on sailing boats and I love being on and around the water - this boat is currently docked in a marina in the city centre and why spend hundreds on a water front studio when I can stay on a lovely boat. I'd also love to meet the community and generally enjoy the lifestyle. The boat I'm looking at is valued last year at 35k for insurance purposes. It's 60ft from 1996. She was also shot blasted, 2-pack epoxy coated including base plate and had 12 new anodes fitted in 2018. So the boat was lifted out last year and they didn't get any work/plating done - the seller assures me that he wasn't told of any work that needed doing. We agreed on a price (aprrox 30k), with the agreement that I get a survey, and if there's any work that needs doing after the survey up to £2k, I'll split the cost here. If it's north of 2k, I'll get my 10% deposit back (which I haven't paid yet) and pull out of the sale because I would struggle to pay much more. The seller seems like a good character, and in the interest of a quick sale (he almost sold it in July and the buyer backed out last minute), he's knocked a further 2k off the price agreed if I do not get a survey and move in this month. Me, being in my 20s, I can't afford to buy this outright so I'll be getting a loan, so this is quite attractive. The present anodes will need to be replaced within 6-12 months, which will cost about 500 quid and need a lift out, so from that perspective it makes sense to get it lifted out for a survey now. On the other hand it would save me money on rent moving in quick, and over the summer I might put it on airbnb over the weekends whilst I'm off in my van rock climbing, which could allow me to live rent free for some of the year. Do you have any advice? Do you think the discount is a good one? Or do you think this is a massive alarm bell for issues underneath? Do you have any advice for ensuring I get my deposit back in the event of a no sale for the given terms? We've drafted a contract, but not through any official board so I don't know how to guarantee it's enforcement. From where I'm sat both ways have their own risks, so I'd be very grateful for any experienced folk to let me know what they'd do.
  5. Does anyone know of anywhere that are still doing mortgages or loans? Obviously its not the most ideal way of buying a boat, but we would rather put the money into a mortgage on a boat than say renting a place with nothing to show for it after 10years. Sure we could get a house mortgage to mitigate this, but that required a big deposit and more importantly, knowing where you want to live for a long time. It seems most of the reliable places have stopped doing them pegasus marine finance seem to be the only option, anyone have any experience with them? Thanks, Alex.
  6. Hello, Debbie here using craigs forum, thanks, new to boating, would like to know what you say instead of hello to other boaters?
  7. Hello a paint question for you all please, we are in process with a new build, the paintwork is just being applied. Has anyone here had any paint protection applied after the top coat, either as a clear varnish or along the lines as used on cars. Mainly to help protect colour and help prevent deterioration from the elements etc. I'd be interested to here your experience and if you though it is worth the cost. Thank you.
  8. the Mrs and I bought a boat! ARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR So damn excited! So relieved! So nervous! The vertigo.... spinning... What do you wish you knew when you bought your first boat?
  9. I'm not sure where to post these updates- which seem to happen on the Sunday night (after I've returned from the boat, had a shower and fed the very hungry attention deprived cats). Adding to the list of new things I've done; I've now refuelled a narrowboat. I'll clarify that because I know the wife will be along any minute now without her own account and complain about how inaccurate I'm being. In fact, she was steering and the helmsman was guiding and I... I... was asked to wait on shore! I've also emptied a porta potti (for the first time)- and embarrasingly not a moment too soon either! It wasn't as bad as I had thought it would be, makes you wonder how bad I thought it would be. Also- I made a bed! So trifecta! Moment of clarification- I don't mean I 'made the bed' as in got up and shook the doona cover (duvet cover for you British). I literally constructed a bed. And thank you for all the help last week about the bilge. I checked it and it was fine and dry and the boat did not sink. I'll have to roll up my sleeves and clean in there once we are in our home marina- but until then I'm just not thinking about it. Friday we are off to Cow Roast marina so if you see us please say hello! And give whatever advice you can, it is always gratefully received. This picture is a little better.
  10. Hi, I'm new to the forum and unfortunately I have a question and need help already! (BTW this forum has been invaluable when we have been researching- so thank you to those that keep it running.) The boat (2001) we just got surveyed has come up with a good hull (somethings to put on the 'to-do' list but nothing to worry too much about). However, the engine (beta- 28) is leaking- oil and water, and the thermostat (I forget the name of it- though it was the thing that is connected to the engine to tell you how hot the engine runs) has been disconnected. The suggestions made were that this engine could take between £1000 and a £a-new-engine to fix. This is our first boat, and so we would like to ask do you think it is worth continuing with the sale, in a similar situation would people usually walk away when confronted with replacing an engine? In your experience, is it best to have the brokerage deal with fixing this issue before we proceed with purchasing, or should we negotiate on the price and then find our own place to have her fixed? On the brokerage website it states that boats will be repaired following a survey- and that if we put in a lower than asking price offer (which we did- £2000) lower than the repairs- if they fall within that range will be up to us to cover. So if the repair costs £2000 they say that the owner has already paid that by accepting the lower offer. But, that's crazy because we put in an offer of what we were happy to pay for the boat- not what amount we were hoping to repair!!! Arrrr! Many many thanks for any replies Anna
  11. Could I ask a question please, what are experienced members thoughts on purchasing a new boat compare to a relatively expensive second-hand, the reading I have done suggests that the steel in new boats that are built today I'm not as durable, as the boats that have been built say 10 years 15 years ago. Your thoughts would be much appreciated.
  12. Hello, Looks like the old thread went a little off topic so here we are again. For those that do not know we bought the GRP boat Kathleen, a 1981 Buckingham 20ft, hull is in very good condition, so is electrics, new batteries, cables, apart from the bilge boat is dry as a bone that has been left out in the sun. She has a few quirks and the engine needed some work but we are still in what I feel is a win win situation, Engine has new glow plugs, starts easily needed a new fuel system (fitted a couple of days ago reconditioned), final test of boat will be on Sunday engineer is taking her out for a two hour cruise down the Trent to load test the engine if all goes well and he will sign off on the work and we will bring her home. Quirks that still need sorting but can wait till she is home Gear leaver works in reverse (push forward for reverse) RPM gauge does not work and Horn is none functional. Future upgrades if we decide she is the right boat to keep and spend our River/Canal life on: 240v system including solar. This will comprise of a couple of small panels, controller, 300w Inverter and one additional battery (raising our leisure battery to 2) Replacing the alternator Heating eberspacher Artronic D2 Plan She is currently moored at Sawley Marina and we have a waiting berth at Aston Marina, if the final load test on Sunday goes well then we will move her up the TMC to her new home on Monday.
