  1. Hi there We are looking at a narrow boat with a 300l stainless steel water tank (located in the bow I believe). This is going to be insufficient for 2 full time liveaboards. We are exploring options for extending the water capacity of the boat (ideally to reach a total of around 600l+). One idea is to add a plastic tank under the bed. Is this a good idea? Or alternatively how much is it likely to cost to add more capacity within the bow/ is this likely feasible?)
  2. we recently bought a narrowboat, she's 30ft, built by eastern caravans and narrowboats ltd. the boat came with a folder & all the pamphlets for all the appliances etc, there's one for a bulge pump, so we know there is a pump somewhere on the boat, it's hooked up to the 12v battery, and the wires for it run under the floor, the switch is on, etc. there's defo a pump down there somewhere, but how the heck do we get to it to check it's working & in good condition? short of taking the floor up? there's no hatches for the main bilge of the boat. most articles about bilge pump maintenance assume you're installing one for the first time, or that it's easily accessible (eg in the engine bay). the bilge is divided into three segments (the two outside ones are fuel & gas lockers) and dont have pumps in them any advice would be gratefully appreciated
  3. Hi everyone, we are new to the community and new to boating, so looking for some advice on a boat we are considering buying (for a small business with commercial mooring; not live aboard). Before viewing the boat we were advised (by boating friends, sadly not local so couldn't come along) to look out for rust on the waterline and in the bilge. There seems to be rust in both areas (see pics), though we're unsure how superficial. The owner unfortunately has not had a survey done, though it has been out for reblacking about three years ago and he says should be slightly overdue another three coats now (Comastic). It's a 55ft 1999 narrowboat which will also be needing a new engine. Obviously we'd be looking to get a full survey done before commiting anything, but my question is, based on these issues, is it worth it at all or would it be better (particularly given our inexperience) to walk away (or possibly try to haggle down substantially)? We're not shy of doing the work, but would like to pay a fair price and know what we might be walking into. Perhaps estimated price ranges (for boat or work) would also be useful, though I know this might not really be enough info to go on. Thanks in advance! Attached are some pics we took of the rusty areas:
  4. Hello all, Last month my family (including husband and two little girls, 2 and 3) and I moved onto a 65ft narrow boat. We love it, always knew we would, and it's been in the running for a very long time! However, I've just come across my first problem, and I don't know how to handle it! We have a pump out toilet, which is usually fab. We had it pumped out the other day, and within a day or so, the toilet stopped flushing. The pump is still working, and we've disconnected and re connected all pipes. There was a bit of a tissue blockage at one point, but that's the only thing we could find. When you flush, you can hear the pump start, but it's just not pulling any water through. Is there something obvious I'm missing? Or is this going to be a case of hiring someone to come and resolve the problem? Thanks Sian
  5. Hi all! I am looking to buy a sail away and wondering if you lovely lot can offer some advice please. I want to work on my boat and create my own feel to my boat as I need specific elements due to being an artists and using it as my studio toobut don't know whether I should be doing this on land or moored? Has anyone else have any experience of this or know of anyone who has and how they went about it please? Kim
  6. Hi all, Myself and my partner have recently purchased a converted paddleboat - lovingly described as a 'shed' by our surveyor. It needs a lot of work, we were present for only the last half hour of the in water, pre-purchase survey as the guy turned up an hour and a half early and we live the opposite end of London. He was a recommendation of the estate agent (we knew at the time this was probably a bad idea but didn't know the first thing about finding someone ourselves) and he seemed like a nice chap. He patiently answered any questions we had and was very honest about the condition of the boat; the hull was fine but everything above that needed work! Fast-forward to now, over a month and a half later and we have found two square feet of rusty sludge in middle of the hull. Floorboards had been covered with insulation and mdf laminate so there was nowhere for any water to go. Unsure of how to proceed, we turned to consult our survey report only to discover it still hadn't been emailed to us. After a few days of nagging, we finally received it earlier today. It is literally ten bullet points that were clearly copied from the surveyor's very basic notes (spelling mistakes and all). Is this what you get for £300??? We were at least expecting thorough ultrasound readings. The report reads '5. Hull 4.7 to water line good to 4.5 good' Is this typical? Would be grateful for any info! Thanks, Naive
  7. Hello, I'm very much a newbie after some expert opinions please. Me and my fiance are buying our first narrowboat and looking to become continuous cruisers. We've been to see quite a lot of boats now, but saw this 70ft Jonathan Wilson boat yesterday and are considering putting in an offer. https://www.whiltonmarina.co.uk/used-narrowboats/details/3719.aspx It's with Whilton Marina and they state they don't have a huge amount of history about her, so no recent survey to speak of, BSC till July 2018 (but they will issue a new one complete with sale) and she was last blacked and had anodes checked in 2013, so I guess that this is due again pretty imminently. She's got Eberspacher central heating and a Bubble stove at present. She seemed clean and dry inside, but I noticed that the wood frame which sits around the internal windows seemed to be missing and I could see the polystyrene insulation (this was dry to touch). The sale would include a new BSC, engine service (a BMC 1.8 engine) and also if anything was found on survey which affects its current insurability they will do the works for free. My concerns are that that the engine is old and might not be ideal for continuous cruising among other things, but my main concern is our lack of experience when it comes to buying a boat! Any opinions or recommendations gratefully received, thank you very much !
  8. Hello, I'm looking for a bit of advice. I'm in the initial stages at looking at living permanently aboard, but before I go any further I need to know if its possible to live in either York or Leeds city centre. York is preferable, as close to the city as possible although happy to go to the west of York. Leeds would need to be central. I would love any advice you can give me, been trying to do some research online however struggling with a lack of links on google... is this because it's just not possible (I really hope not!!) Thanks in advance Chloe
  9. Hi, A good friend of mine has his 70th birthday this September and I'd like to organize a canal boating holiday for 3 guys, we're all in good health but have no experience of boating so would appreciate any tips on how and where to hire a boat. The idea comes from watching boats in Bath on the river Avon, that area seemed really idyllic, we'd coming from London and I'd like somewhere within a couple of hours travel. Happy to receive any suggestions or info. Thanks for any help David
