  1. Has anyone had any recent experience mooring at the any of the following marinas and/or had work done to your boat at these marinas? Also, what was the customer service, mooring, friendliness and administration like? (1). Napton Narrowboats;. (2). Wigrams Turn Waterside & Marina; (3). Ventnor Waterside & Marina; (4). Calcutt Boats?
  2. What are the moorings generally like in August between the top of the Caen Hill flight and Bradford-upon-Avon; as we have been told the stretch of canal is very congested? We are wondering if it is worth booking visitor moorings at Caen Hill Marina (after descending the Caen Hill flight) and at marinas towards Bradford-upon-Avon.
  3. hi there, Im matthew and i am soon to begin a life on the river. Intitially i wiill be renting a permenant mooring on a 55ft narrowboat and intending to purchase my own boat and moorings sometime next year if everything goes according to plan so wish me luck! Having done rather alot of reseach the only obstacle i forsee is that of securing permenant residential moorings at good price as they do seem to cost alot. My question is as follows: Where should i look to find available moorings preferably within the midlands but not too far away from worcester? Any help will be greatly apprieciated Regards Matthew
  4. Hi all A few years ago i hired a narrowboat on the Thames around the Lechlade /Oxford area. The boat yard told me on rivers its best to allways moor facing upstream. I followed their advise but didnt really understand the reason for this. Could the more expericanced boaters amonst you please explain this to me.. Thanks in advance Carl
  5. We are planning a cruise starting next week which will include going from Stratford down the Avon to the Severn and then up to Stourport. I would welcome advice on moorings, fuel availability and any good pubs etc as we are not familiar with this route, having last done it on a hire boat circa 1984 Thanks in advance
  6. Hello Everybody! My names Rich, I'm new to the forum and this is my first post. I'm looking to get a Narrowboat to live aboard full time within the next year and I'll need a residential mooring somewhere around Sandwell, Dudley or perhaps just outside either as I currently work full time but I'm having trouble finding any anywhere, let alone in a viable location. If anyone has any suggestions as to where to start looking or who would be good to talk to that would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
  7. 8. My boat is currently on the Leeds Liverpool and I'm happy to stay there, this yr I'm thinking of changing my moorings I've been looking on the crt website often and hardly any come available or on the Lancaster canal either, I'm based near Chorley so this area would be great and also towards Parbold, Scarisbrick fine too, anywhere got vacancies not too expensive ?
  9. If you have a residential mooring in one part of the network, that you want to hold on to, but you wish to cruise another part of the network for an extended period of time, are you eligible to apply for a winter mooring, like a regular CC'er? Newbie here, by the way. Hi everybody .
  10. Hello, I am currently looking at buying a 62 foot narrowboat. I am struggling to find any mooring availability with marinas too small or currently full. I have my name on a waiting list. Does anybody know of any private moorings that may be available or where I might look to find them? I have looked on the CRT website but only small boat moorings available. Many thanks! Andy

  12. There were two sessions during the User Forum in February where the group were asked to contribute ideas, which we did. I thought it would be interesting to open these out to a wider group, i.e. you lot This was one of the sessions in which CRT were looking for thoughts and ideas around the provision of short term moorings. So, here we go: There are two questions because we were split into two sets of groups. and So, anyone got anything to contribute to these please? Richard
  13. Hi, I am shortly moving abroad, and have a 70' narrowboat which I have lived on for the past few years. She is in great condition, recently repainted, etc, but because of the age of the hull (late 80s) and the typical broker's bleat about the resale market being at rock bottom right now, I'd like to rent her out ("houseboat" only type basis, so no cruising permitted). And at least I will still have my home if things don't work out for me overseas! I rented another boat out about 12 years ago, to a wonderful couple who really appreciated and looked after her, but unfortunately the agent who helped me to set everything up has sadly passed away. My question is, does anyone know of anywhere that allows subletting to tennants (or will at least "turn a blind eye" to the fact that someone else is "looking after the boat" in my absence!!)? I was based in London, but although the marina I was in were quite happy to take the blind-eye approach to people living aboard, threw up objections when I raised the subject of letting. The boat is currently on brokerage, but I'm really not happy about the situation. I would prefer the boat to stay within striking / commuter distance of London if at all possible, but I'm open to other suggestions, and all suggestions will be gratefully recieved! Thanks in advance, folks :-)
  14. Hi all, We're on our way north to Yorkshire. CanalPlanAC suggests we moor tomorrow night at Rugeley Visitor Moorings, but as we want to go home to have Christmas, etc. with our children we need to moor for about 10 nights. I've tried to search the CaRT website (& CanalPlanAC) to find out if they have a 14 day limit, but the only things we found are that "they are winter moorings" and: "The nearest place in the direction of Tuppenhurst Aqueduct is Rugeley Railway Bridge No 65B; 1 furlong away." The best we've come up with is to press on to Great Haywood Marina and pay them for 10 nights. Helpful comments etc. appreciated! Roger
  15. Apologies if this has been posted before but I thought I would share this article from the Oxford Mail 18/06/2014: Interesting situation in Oxford where the Council, C&RT and the EA all seem seem to view the boaters as "problems" who need to be eradicated or at best "managed". The last couple of years has seen Oxford Council crack down on boats without home moorings through Unlawfully Moored Boats Enforcement Group (Umbeg). Continuous cruisers on the Oxford Canal are being served patrol notices much more frequently and told to move further away or threatened with section 8 when returning to the canal. The EA has recently taken to evicting boats after only 4-5 days stay, and sometimes with police escort. Oxford Council has tried, and sometimes been successful, in getting local landowners to put up "No Mooring" signs in areas where boats have previously moored. At the same time there are no new moorings being established in Oxford. The last CRT mooring to be auctioned off went for £6005/year. That was an Agenda 21 mooring, which is ironic, since these moorings where established with a policy to promote sustainable development and affordable housing . I think these factors all have contributed to the "Boat people in land grab" situation that is described in the Oxford Mail. Shame that none of it is mentioned in the article.
  16. Hi I have residential moorings in Cheshire but am relocating south next year due to work. I have heard about moorings at Hampton Hall Farm on the GU Canal but i cannot locate any contact details for them to see if i can add to the waiting list. Does anyone have any contact details for them or indeed any other suitable moorings in the area. I am quite flexible with location anywhere south of tring on the GU, anywhere on the kennet and avon up to bath and anywhere on the paddington arm of the GU would be do-able. Its a little difficult with not actually living in that area at the moment to find good information so any help appreciated. Moorings not needed until June / July 2014 but am willing to either go on a waiting list and if needed pay in advance to secure. Its for a 70ft narrowboat Thanks
  17. We have just secured a mooring up at Macclesfield Marine Centre and Kevin, the guy who runs it, says he has two 70 foot moorings coming up next to one another as the owners are moving to the Midlands and possibly another mooring of 57 foot. The e-mail address is kevin@freedomboats.co.uk Brook Street, Macclesfield, Cheshire, United KIngdom SK11 7AWNice place [/url]
  18. hi all, at last making the trip from packet to roydon can you give me any advice on places to stop over,i'm thinking two stops should do it starting 25 may hope to get there on the 27,if possible bearths with a plug in thinking re charge and could beer could i book in advance?phone numbers may be? any help at all would be apprecated. thanks in advance steve west.
  19. This is a bit of a genral topic for all, I've always wanted to get into boating and have been on many boating holidays the only think that has stopped me is the extreme price of mooring for example. Thames for 30ft its about £3000, Wey £2300 and have read its about £1300 on the the Basingstoke Canal. Because of this I would like to moor on the Basingstoke canal, I want to buy a viking 26 centre cockpit, but I can't find anywhere to moor it on the basingstoke canal, any recomendations of boat yard or marina's I can moor at (that are under £2000) on any of these rivers or canals. Thanks in advance, James
  20. Does anyone have personal experience of either/both of these marinas? Just thinking about a possible change of mooring for our narrowboat. Thanks
  21. Hi All, We (the family), are moving our 60' narrow boat from Cropredy to Newbury soon. Can anyone recommend places to moor along the River Thames and whether it is advantageous to book/who with. We are planning to moor at Abingdon and Pangbourne, but appreciate this may need to change subject to moorings and availability. I note moorings are defined by the Vale of White House District Council in Abingdon. We've been given plenty of advise, e.g. turn upstream to moor, take shears to cut back the overgrown bank at a mooring, all moorings along towpaths are 24 hours unless stated otherwise. However, as we are so used to the ease of mooring on the canals, the River Thames is a bit of an unknown, i.e. ease of mooring, private land, etc. We are ideally looking to moor near pubs and shops for provisions for the evening. The https://www.thamesvisitormoorings.co.uk/ doesn't allow to book moorings at locks. Also, what are people's best guess at how long it will take from King's Lock to Kennet Mouth? I'm estimating two days. Any help, advise and recommendations would be gratefully appreciated.
  22. We are on Countdown to our 4th Canal Boat Holiday, 2nd with kids and a pooch! Can you give me suggestions as to overnight moorings along the Llangollen and Shropshire Union Canal, plus ideal places to stop for Food and where we can stop for Supermarkets/Shopping. The plan is to stop at Chester for night and day so we can visit the City. Any mooring recommendations and advice on windingholes would be appreciated. Thanks
  23. Hi all, So it's coming up to winter and we've decided we want a mooring after cruising for a year and a half (And the CRT breathing down out necks). Does anyone know of any vacancies around Manchester? Anywhere close to Manchester, Ashton, Hyde, Marple, New Mills, Whaley Bridge, furthest away Macclesfield. Any information appreciated!
  24. Just done The South Pennine Ring...wanted to mention the very quiet and pristine moorings (rings) at Sportcity in front of the tennis centre. There is a tram stop just on the other side of the cut so easy-peasy to nip into town but not many passers by other than joggers/cyclists.
  25. We are planning on doing the Black Country Ring from Autherley Junction (in May) in the clockwise direction. There will be 6 of us, 2 children aged 10 and 12 , my parents (in their 70's), my husband and I and we have a week to do it in. I am really interested to do the ring as it is so varied but a bit wary of moorings around Birmingham as I have heard it is not very safe. Would the following places be OK to stop overnight? night 1 (sat) Cross Keys, Penkridge night 2 (sun) Great Haywood night 3 (mon) The Dog and Doublet night 4 (tues) Gas Street Basin night 5 (weds) Black Country Museum night 6 (thurs) New Inn, Coseley night 7 (fri) near to Autherley Junction I know that some days will be long but we are prepared to get up early and be travelling most of the day. Any advice would be appreciated. This is our second trip as a family, I had boating experience about 20 years ago so we are not total beginners. Thank you
