  1. Planning trip up the Grand Union to Market Harborough end Feb / early March. Time may be a little tight so just wondering what the typical delays are whilst waiting for the flights to be your favour. I appreciate its a bit like how long is a piece of string, but just trying to get a feel for peoples experiences. Many thanks in advance.
  2. Many of you will be aware that there has been a wish to reopen the Bridgewater canal link to the Manchester Ship Canal, for a very long time. Not much more than a dream...till now! The demolition of the silver Jubilee Bridge approach road has made the dream a reality. Outline planning permission has been applied for and a consultation process begun. We plan a lift, some traditional locks and an inclined plane, along with visitors centre etc. If you visit Runcorn Locks Restoration Society website, you will find links to a leaflet, explaining the project and also a link to a survey. http://unlockruncorn.org/ We would like to hear the opinions of boaters aswell as local residents so please will you have a look and fill in the survey online. For those of you who are local, there will be an opportunity to find out more by attending our open day on Monday 31st August. 11.00-2.00, at Percival lane, Runcorn, WA7 4UY, where there will be guided walks of the project area. For further updates, we are on facebook too. https://www.facebook.com/groups/unlockruncornsupporters
  3. Hi, our plan this year is to go to Liverpool then up the Leeds and Liverpool canal to towards Leeds and back(. I would like to go to York and down the river Trent, but not that confident yet, and the dimensions seem a squeeze). Our boat is 60' with fenders and rudder it comes to 61.75. So we can go up and down Wigan flight, technically, but looking at some of those leaky gates, it looks a bit scary. Is it worth doing? Will I be risking the boat coming down if the locks are that bad? I know the trip to Liverpool is fine , it's the Wigan and beyond that worries me, any advice greatfully recieved ? The boat is a semi trad, so another question is, if going through very leaky gates, would it be better to cover the stern in some sort of angular tent to stop water finding its way into engine bay ?i want to have fun, not stress, so it's not a thing I have to do, but would like to me to. Cheers
  4. I've lost the hexagonal keyed metal water tank plug for our boat. (At the Bath Widcombe Lock Flight water point in the unlikely chance anyone has it!). Are these easily replaceable? How would I know widths, depths and thread pitch of the plug without trying to measure it crudely? It's a 1987 Colecraft. Any pointers well appreciated.
  5. I expect to get shot down, so sorry for asking, but having gone past on the train a few times and seen boats that appear to be moored in the occasional longer spaces between locks on this flight, I'd ask, is this permissable? ie acceptable, within CRT rules and an okay thing to do? If not, I won't. Thanks in anticipation. Jon
  6. It was common once to see (and hear) pairs of boats coming up and down the Marsworth Flight. The Bollinder's single hot bulb engines in the early motor boats needed to be reversed to give any braking effort. Since sometimes the engine would go out on the change, especially when running cold in locks, it was a wiser choice to strap the boats in. Often even boats with gearboxes would use this method as it's quicker, and gets the steerer on the side of the lock where they need to be.
  7. Many years ago when we went down the Rochdale 9 I had to pay someone money, in a hut as I remember near the top for the pleasure. I would like to know who would I have paid , when and why did they stop charging,? If anyone knows I would be very grateful.
  8. Went through barrowford locks good Friday returning today ( in the snow !!!) and nearly fainted every piece of paddle gear was working and copious quantities of grease in evidence.... A number of gates have been replaced over winter and the lock keeper last summer seemed to make quite a difference too. I think there really has been an marked increase in maintenance on this part of the L&L in the last few years as CRT seem to have directed some long overdue money this way.
  9. Hi, I locked up in a hire boat the other day on my own while she was still asleep, a 52' in a 60 'plus lock on the staffs and worcs, unremarkable, taking it slow. But it was my first solo so was good for me to do it alone, anyway , as I went through, a single hander then went through the other way, an experienced man.i expressed my trepidation at trying it going down, cilling etc. he looked bemused and said its easy, as you open the paddles the boat will move forward away from the cill, and when it is empty it will ease away fro the gate to let you open them, he then bow hauled it through with one pull on his middle line,he said he didn't do ladders since his hip replacement. Is this others experience can I adopt this technique with out any worries.
  10. In the topic "Piper narrowboat ramming a lock gate" mayalid made the very good comment that there are reasonable ways to get a level. As a newcomer I would welcome advice on how people have dealt with this problem.
  11. Hi I need to move my boat from today-Thursday from Fenny Stratford to Bates Boatyard (Aylesbury arm GU). Are there any helpers for the locks? Stoke Hammond Lock, Soulbury Locks, Leighton Lock, Grove Lock, Church Lock, Slapton Lock, Horton Lock, Ivinghoe Locks, Seabrook Locks, Marsworth Two Locks and then the 11 locks from Marsworth junction down to Puttenham. That is a lot of locks :/ Hope to arrive at Fenny this afternoon. So realistically there will be none before tomorrow. Would anyone be around to kindly help with any of them? Sadly I am having to do this bit of the journey on my own so would greatly appreciate the help. Thanks very much
  12. Hope you enjoy this time-lapse of us whizzing (apparently) down Caen Hill flight. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7q41HHyBtl8
  13. 'Out the Blue', 50' narrowbeam, is intending to go down the Caen Hill flight at Devizes Saturday morning 19 October. We're newish to canal boating, but we've been told that this project will be much easier with two boats together, possibly warped together. Is anyone out there also intending to travel that way that morning? We will have a crew of 3 and perhaps a shore-based friend as well to work the locks. Thanks, Kate & Nick
  14. I keep getting waterscrape announcements of a lock ladder survey which seems to cover the whole system. Anyone else smell the potential for another bollards balls-up when they find that there are lots of sorts of ladders, fastenings, top handrail arrangements etc. etc.? N
