  1. I have a grey plastic water tank situated under my front deck. I discovered a very slow leak in a joint in the plastic pipework coming from the pump in that area and that's now completely sorted out. However, I've noticed that the cupboard which houses the tank is still wet. On further investigation I've discovered that there is a small hole right on the top edge of the tank from which water squirts a fine spray when the tank is filled/full. Obviously I need to fix this PDQ. I can't get to actually see where the leak is coming from but I know roughly where the squirt comes out. I was thinking of using Fernox LX sealant, with perhaps a piece of right angled plastic profile over the area bonded on with the Fernox. Is there a better solution, bearing in mind that this water is used for drinking? I'd also really like a water gauge to see how full the tank is. Any recommendations here would also be very welcome. Many thanks for reading this whether or not you have any solutions!
  2. Last September after many years of good service our Thetford 365 was leaking on the bellows pump and beginning to look a bit tired, So with the cost of the spares taken into account we decided to go with our original plan and just replace the whole thing when it got badly worn. We hoped the new Qube was going to be a good replacement---- As of now I'm not so sure! Up until now we wondered if had been condensation or not properly engaging the parts when changing tanks as we have found water leaking down the side of the base and on other occasions the slide handle seemed rather damp,But yesterday it was much worse.... As far as I can tell the spigot on the bowl is not properly sealing into the holding tank and on closer examination the top deck of the unit seems to have about 1/4" of sag which is putting the connection between the tanks out of kilter. I tried to contact Thetford but discovered, when I called, they close reception on Friday afternoons. This gives me rather too much time to consider what we really want to do about it. ;-) Have we got a faulty couple of tanks or is there a design problem along with the other issues that we have noticed. We would like to hear if anyone else come across problems with this product or can suggest a better replacement. John
  3. Hi I just bought a 2002 Dave Clark built narrow boat. There's a leak coming from the flue which is causing some staining and dripping inside the cabin when it rains. The floor seems to be OK, and no wood on the walls is swollen - just stained. I'll address the leak (once I can find the source) but I wondered if the water that runs down behind the inner walls can find its way into the hull and, if it can, is there any way to drain it? Logic tells me the hull should be designed to let any water that finds its way into the hull run to the back to be pumped out from the bilge pump in the engine compartment, but I am not sure how good this logic is in practice. I'm just imagining a sealed compartment in the middle of the boat filling up with water and never draining. I hope I'm wrong and would love it if someone can give me a clue how hulls are designed to handle leaks into the mid-sections. Thanks in anticipation. There sure is a lot to learn! Paul
  4. Hi I moved onto my first boat a month ago, and today noticed water stains on some of the floor boards. The stains are above the area I think the water tank must be, so I think they are probably related. As I am pretty new to this I am now panicking with no idea what to do next - all advice gratefully received!
  5. I admit myself confused. I get that an open weed hatch, faulty stern packing, or non functioning bilge pump will flood the engine bay - but why oh why does that sink the boat? The ballast at the bow counteracts the weight of several people standing on the stern so should be enough to counteract the weight of water in the engine bay. Am I missing something? Is the water getting from the engine bay into the main hull somehow and over weighing the whole boat? I thought the engine bay, below deck level, was a separate compartment from the main hull and ballast area. Surely there is more we can do to reduce risk of sinking?! Please can you guys clarify.
  6. Hiya, In the recent heavy rain three of our six roof vents have leaked, and more than just a drop. We have those ECS ventiduct vents, with a sort of plastic mushroon covered by a low round metal grill that are pretty common. I unscrewed both parts from the roof and other day and use exterior silicone sealant to try around the joint between the roof and the plastic mushroom and just generally cleaned them up from crud etc, but they still leak. They have started doing this at the same time, so I guess they are getting old. But they cost over £30 a pop from what I can see. Can anyone suggest something else that will seal them better than the silicone, maybe some kind of putty/grout or somesuch?? The metal grills are fine, but I think that the plastic components are just a little old and worn/degrading. I'd rather not replace them with a new system as I don;t fancy drilling new screw holes in the roof etc. I'd much appreciate any suggestions that people might have!!!
  7. Hello, On my beta 38 (4cylinder bv1505) there is always a small amount of diesel around the injectors after I've run it for a while. I've cleaned it up with tissue paper, and when I run it again, the diesel returns. It's not a great deal, but enough to make a nasty smell and smokey engine room. I wondered if I needed to put new washers in the injectors? You can't see anything leaking if you look at the injectors (carefully) while the engine's running, but the diesel is certainly there after an hour or two. The engine was run up by a good engineer, so I expect that the injectors are tightened up correctly, but this might not be the case. I'd really appreciate any suggestions! Thanks! Patrick Vale
  8. Hi, Purchasing this boat and just wanted a second opinion on water in the engine bilge. I’ve attached some pictures and wondered if anyone had any advice comments as to the amount of water of the general condition of the area. its a 30ft steel hull narrow boat 1995 with a beta marine engine. The brokerage say it’s just rain water and I tend to accept then but still as a first time buyer it’s slightly concerning. cheers!
  9. Hi all, Disclaimer! mechanical noob, so apologies in advance for my missed terminology/diagnoses! I have noticed a small leak from my throttle on my Thornycroft BMC 1.8. I had the RCR out yesterday, the chap mentioned a seal would need to be replaced as this has degraded, hence the leak. As the engine is still nicely purring I was hoping to get to the marina I am on route to, to resolve the issue there. At present the leak is a drip every 10 seconds roughly. I have put a container underneath it, which is collecting the diesel. I have included a couple photos below. 1) I imagine I can buy a replacement seal from BMC and hopefully repair this myself? Is this advisable? is there any risk I can do further damage? I haven't even started to look into how I do this, but just wanted to know if it would be worth me researching the method or not. 2) The diesel has been dripping onto my rubber engine mounts Anything I can do to try and preserve the rubber, other than isolating the drip and keeping diesel away from the mounts? Thanks George
  10. Hi gang, Just trying to get an idea of what might be going on with my water system, so I can decide what to do next. We have a 36ft trad. The water tank is at the front under the bow, calorifier under the bed toward the back and overflow pipe into the bilge at the back. Problem is only happening when there is water in the water tank. There is a step up from the cabin to the bow. Sometimes we are finding a significant amount of water pooling around the step. Inside the step is dry, the back of the step is dry. I am not sure where the water is coming from, other than I have a hunch it's from the main tank. The water pump makes a whirring sound every 5 to 10 minutes. The overflow pipe into the bilge is continuously dripping and the bilge needs emptying every 2 days. I have, for now, emptied all the water from the tank and switched off the water pump. I've left it for a week and there is no water in the bilge. Any ideas/ experience would be gratefully received. Thanks, Gemma
  11. Hiya, after some advice if pos Bought our boat a month ago and the vetus water cooled stern gland is leaking... Photos show view from above, leak when pressed at the side and view underneath. It drips when engine is running and spits water out if touched. Could there be a seal gone? Is this something easily fixed? Can we fix it ourselves and does the boat need to come out the water? Thanks for your advice
  12. Hi, Does anyone know of any piece of equipment that can be attached to, or interact with, an already installed pump which will trip and cut out the pump after a set running period, a certain temperature etc? I want to guard against the pump dry running endlessly once the tank has emptied and the pump wet running and filling the boat in the event of a leak. I'm aware of some plumbing fittings which cut out after a certain volume but they don't really fit the bill as they constantly need to be manually reset. Thanks in advance. Dan
  13. Long story short; Needed to take out a water filter tap from the kitchen sink. Realised it had been fitted I'm such a bodge way it wasn't as simple as take it out plus connecting pipes then reconnect pipes lift over. After many trips to the plumb centre a literally hours of work the remaining pipework is now fitted correctly together with no jubilee clips or leaks. So turn water back, still no leaks, very happy. But... The water pump keeps having to repressurise the system once or twice a minute. Nooooo! So the only things I can think of is: A: the pipe under the floor that requires the whole kitchen to come back out (already taken it out once to fix the previous bodge job, was not fun) has a leak in the join. But I can't hear anything, then again is could just be small. Or B: Could it be possible there is air in the system that would cause the pump to keep engaging? C: something else Any thoughts? I list sanity and brain power for this job days ago so I'm not sure what I should do next. Tears are very close I'm that fed up and beaten by this task.
  14. Hi All, So not really sure where to put this one, (hope general boating applys) I am still new to the forum and have been reading so much and learning lots from the forum. So thanks to everyone for the knowledge, experience and kindness to share this. I have been having some issues with the plumbing on my new boat, so I had a plumber come along to fix a few leaks (he came recommended by a boatyard) I wanted to get a washer dryer fitted as he would be doing some work. I got a Miele 2670 washer dryer and he installed the waste to the same outlet as the sink waste, which was how it was before. He said he would cut another hole in the boat to make them both have a separate waste but not until his next visit he had to wait for some parts. I have only been on my boat at the weekends so on firday I turned the water on and had been using things as normal, come sunday eve I noticed a puddle around the washing machine not another leak! I started mopping it up and then checked the filter on the washer (at the bottom of the machine) I emptied 10 buckets of water before getting pissed of doing this. I then opened the washing machine door, admitedly a stupid move. Of course it was FULL of water !! I slammed the door shut straight away, my next idea was to run a spin wash on the machine, this then started to drain the water. But also almost overflowed the sink, as the water was pushed out of the machine it came up the plug hole. I ran another spin wash but the machine kept leaking for a few hours after as there was water all inside the machine. I tiped it on an angle and left a towel to try and drain the machine itself. As you can imagine a stressful and anoying thing to have to do on a sunday evening. Now I an annoyed and frustrated and am not sure what to do, the plumber has to come back to finish some work. He never said I couldnt use the sink !! in fact he tested the sink to make sure it was working ok, I am under the impression the waste water has gone into the washing machine. Can anyone shed any light on what might have happened? or give some adive on what I should do next, I have emailed miele to see if I could have done any damage to my new(to me) washer dryer. Thanks for reading, Look forward to your replied. Martin
  15. I changed the fuel filter last weekend. Not a massive problem, except that bleeding the injector pump was a bit of a b****h. And I now have a bit of a diesel leak. It seems to be coming from the small screws below the bleed nuts (pictured in red). Said bleed nuts could also do with replacing, as the have been a bit chewed up previously. Does anyone know where I can get parts for this, or even what the injector is? The name plate is a bit eroded (also pictured).
  16. Hello Everyone, I have had to resort to a post about this as tonight I feel defeated !! after 2 months of battling with a leak in my engine room, I really thought I had it sussed ! - I have had various things to the calorifier done, including expansion tank fitted and all the joints re done, (plumer was doing some other work did this) - I have reseated the calorifier skin fitting with CT1 as I noticed this wasnt very good, - I then found a small hole near another pipe exit, where a spot of weld was missing and filled this with CT1 , really thought this was it. And yet still I find water, and a fair amount !! Alot of people say check the prop but I really dont think its this and I regularly twist the knob, but I am going to attempt to completely repack this at the weekend. For now I have put a bowl under it., I have taken some photos and even a video to try and show the issue and am desperate for some advice, I had the boat surveyed recently and he said everything was in very good conditon so am dubious to think its the hull itself leaking but starting to feel that way. I did run the eberspecher this morning for hot water and it rained lots today. I have a cratch cover and cannot figure it out ! I wondered if it was coming in through the vents but they dont seem wet ? Any help greatly apreciate, it may stop me going totaly mad. 17. Hi all, Long story short, I had my pump reconditioned some months back. It's always ran like crap at idle but luckily on Saturday a mechanic came out and sorted the timing out and it sounds great now, not perfect but good enough without getting the pump off and using a timing tool. Anyway, the pipes that come out of the back of the pump seem to be leaking around the nut, hard to tell as I've ran out of TP and Kitchen Roll but it would make sense as these were slackened to turn the pump. Is it just a case of removing the throttle plate and making sure they're all tightened up or are there any washers in there that may have likely perished?
  18. Hi I have recently taken ownership of a narrowboat with a jabsco water filter fitted. I am not sure how old the cartridge is or was. This morning the cartridge broke sending a flood of water everywhere. Luckily I had a spare and fitted it. However I found that the little blue clips that hold the main pipework in came out fairly easily. I have pushed them back in and turned water back on and the unit holds but I am now concerned to go out leaving the water on Is it good practice to turn the water off when leaving the boat to go to work? Are these reliable units or would I be better to take the filter out altogether Any thoughts apprecaited Thanks
  19. ...so thankfully my boat has come up with her second for me. I'm so thrilled. Any guidance you wise people can offer would be hugely appreciated. There's a fair amount of water in my cabin bilge and I'd obviously like to figure out its source. Last time this happened a few years ago it turned out to be a leaky water pump - easy to diagnose as the thing was going off every hour or so. Replaced it and job was a good'un. This time, no such luck. The (second) pump was replaced in the summer after it stopped working completely when friends were on the boat. A new one was fitted and everything worked well after that - it doesn't go off now except when I'm using water, which seems right... The only sign that something might be wrong with the plumbing is the kitchen tap, which only works at a slow, almost non-existent dribble. Is it likely this is a clue? Or would the water pump be going off all the time if this were a leaky pipe issue? I only want to start investigating pipes etc. if it seems at least plausible that they're causing the leak. Otherwise, I gather condensation or rainwater could be the culprits... As I said, any help would be wonderful. Thanks in advance, Helena
