Crt giving a further update today. Initial fix seemed not to work and may be a longer closure or limited supervised passage

Hello everyone, has work started yet on the Hungerford lock? The last update on the CRT website was from 10 Feb, saying work has been further delayed, planned to be finish in the 4 April. Has anything happened yet? And what's the K&A canal like down that end, is it navigable? Thanks

Hi, seen this link to a survey by Satlford Council attempting to get a ban on mooring in Saltford Meadow. I haven't yet been to the Western K&A but hope to and don't want to see mooring options further limited. It's the usual story of alleged troublesome overstaying boats causing a nuisance. CRT and the council already have sufficient powers to deal with this and a blanket mooring ban punishes well behaved boats and is no good for anyone. Strongly suggest filling out the quick online survey as they need a public response to get support to ban mooring. http://www.saltfordenvironmentgroup.org.uk/#733 for info And survey link here... https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/MeadLane Thanks!

My wife and I are buying a broad beam boat (60 ft by 9ft-12ft) as a live aboard and are researching possible moorings In the south of the country. We are expecting to pay a healthy amount so any suggestions of locations or marinas with spaces, or any general advise would be gratefully received. Thanks Craig

I am currently a liveaboard CCer (have a 32ft GRP narrowbeam cruiser) but will start a PhD in Bath in September, and I think really the only feasible option for my relocation to Bath will be to have a permanent mooring (or the boat will have to go -my funding won't stretch to mooring my boat somewhere else and renting in Bath...although I have had it suggested by more than one person that I should just crane the boat into the university's ornamental lake ) Not expecting to find an officially residential mooring, as long as I can get away with being a 'stays a lot' type (I will in all likelihood be going between boat and places elsewhere a fair bit of the time anyway) but need to be relatively close to Bath as I will be relying on bus or train to get into uni. I'm aware of a few marinas round there, but I've not had a mooring before, so I really don't have much of an idea of how hard it will be to actually secure one (things I read about the K&A make it sound like they're in short supply) and when I should start looking etc (in an ideal world, I would love one sorted for end of August as I am about to embark on a pre-PhD grand canal journey that I am looking forward to, but PhD comes above everything, so if it was a case of needing to start looking ASAP and snap one up as soon as it came along, I will do that). I would really appreciate any advice anyone could give regarding mooring availability in that part of the world and the best approach to take to finding one.

We are planning on moving our permanent mooring from the Oxford Canal to the K&E next year after enjoying the winding Oxford Canal and Grand Union. I've never cruised on rivers and I am researching as much as possible. I've read about mooring the stern before the bow, travel upstream to moor, right-of-way to downstream traffic, etc. My main concern is navigating the Kennet junction without being washed down the Thames to London and advise on how and where to moor on the Thames. We have a 60' narrow boat with bow thrusters and would welcome any tips, advice, books and websites that would prepare us. Also, what anchor and chain length should we check we have? Many thanks. Alan

In between fitting out the boat, I am actually, slowly making my way around the network I'm currently on the Lea, having thoroughly enjoyed a summer on both the Lea and the Stort. However, I'm keen to try pastures new now and the K&A is looking favourite. While I'm heading that way it seems sensible to explore the Basingstoke and also the river down to Godalming. However, I'm very unsure of procedures on the Thames (should I try coming out at Limehouse or play safe and go back through London to emerge at Brentford?) How long the various stretches of the Thames take, where to moor and the licenses available. I'm thinking it would be silly to buy a gold license with only two months left? I'm a cc'er with a 62ft nb. I've been looking at maps and reading up but just confused at the moment. If anyone has advice or can point me in the right direction I'd appreciate it. thanks

Hi all, We will soon to be embarking on our first journey on our new boat. We're both new to boat ownership but do have limited experience between ourselves. This will certainly be the biggest trip we've done and we can't bleedin wait to get out there and explore. Before we do though, I thought I'd come seek advice here. The trip will begin at Bradford on Avon and end at Brentford, before moving on to the GU. Any tips and pointer for the challenges along the way, getting the boat ready, equipment needed, where to and not to moor, things that always take longer than they should and of course good pubs. We've got ourselves a Nicholsons guys but any other insider tips will be greatly appreciated. Main concerns are the sections on rivers as we haven't had any previous river cruising experience. Thanks!

Last weeks push got Lutine clear of the Thames, this was useful as I felt that Oxford to about Aldermaston would be difficult territory to leave the boat and go back to work, and the difficulty of finding anywhere to leave the boat on the Oxford extended that still further, in the event to Heyford. Lutine is now in a place where I can, if needs be, go one day at a time getting back to work in the meantime. I'm heading back to the boat on Friday, with the plan to move for one day on Saturday. Someone suggested Woolhampton but other than complying with any CC regs this seems a bit pointless, it's only about two miles! Where would be a good place to get to where I can repeat the trick of tying her up (with moorings pins but on a decent length of bank not tooo far from a road, say 400 yards) for another week or so. I'm hoping the bank holiday weekend will see another push for 3 or 4 days, although events elsewhere may rule that out Destination Dundas is beginning to look achievable, even with this recalcitrant engine...
