  1. Hullo all, please play nice as I have often struggled to negotiate the bible-sized, yet unwritten rule book on web fora. I'm in the mid to late late stages of a fit-out and am currently 100% solar powered. We have 1Kw and are generally as low drain as possible. Unfortunately, we love some of the modern toys and are proud owners of mains voltage fridge freezer and washing machine, bought with the belligerent intent to power somehow... We are, of course, fully off-grid. 8 months of the year we are fine, we turn on 2.5k inverter in the morn and off at night. But, as they say- Winters coming... Last year, off went the fridge and we scraped by- please no suggestions about engines or generators, I'm looking at some very interesting alternative renewables but want to cut down the load through the day. Crux point- Am going to buy a 300w sine-wave inverter to dedicate to the fridge and fit an appropriately sized timer switch so the batteries get more uninterrupted charging time and all stays cool. Am I correct in thinking, given a nominal efficiency of 95% that under the same load the small inverter will draw less power than the big? Thoughts, suggestions and electronic insights please.
  2. Hello hello, Needing some advice about finding a good, but affordable, solution to flat batteries. Bluebell is a little 23' cruiser with a Honda outboard of 9.9 HP. When we were only exploring and moving it on weekends for 5-6 hours a day, the batteries were doing really well, but now that we're back to work and more settled, moving only one day a week/fortnight, we've had problems with the batteries. We have one startup and one leisure. It seems that the startup is too low, so we seem to be running of the leisure battery, which is not working very well (lights dropping intensity and flickering a couple of days after moving the boat). My SO and I are both out of the house from 7/8am to about 9pm, so we haven't been able to let it idle daily. We've tried to counteract it by using the batteries minimally, charging phones at work etc unless in an emergency, only using one light and candles/fairy lights, etc. We don't use any other 12v appliances, so mostly the batteries are powering the water pump and 1-2 LEDs for a couple of hours a day. Anyhow, we've only just bought the boat so are really skint. We want to invest in solar panels, a mains charger, a traction battery, and a generator but dont have the 3odd grand to fund all those purchases at once. What would you all suggest as a first purchase? Considering the cost of a gennie, would solar panels (which are in our planned budget) serve the purpose of getting our batteries back to scratch and maintaining them? Or do we need to invest in a gennie/panels/charger all at once? We've only just bought the boat and spend 2k kitting it out internally, and adding all of the above amounts to the cost of the boat (though I suppose we can take them with us when we leave) so if we can buy these things in stages that would help. Also, we don't have a place to store the gennie unless we build a storage area onto the stern... All of these are worries... Someone suggested transporting the batteries to an on-land friend's house and charging them back up there, but that seems intrusive and difficult and we'd much rather have a long term solution that works. Would be most grateful for any and all advice Thank you, Micha
  3. Hello folks - I'm 'noodling out 'what I need for a change from living as a ccer on my own to a ccer with a boat that will have up to 4 people (1 baby) and one 10 year old part time. - I'm getting my 45ft boat extended to 58ft. My 3 way fridge has come to the end of its life A washing machine would be good I'm not familiar with the maths I need to do to work out what my system can cope with and accordingly what else I need What I have 3 80 watt solar panels 3 105ah leisure batteries A small alternator (I cant remember its output, its for a 3 pot sole diesel, I just remember someone who saw the boat commenting that it didn't have a great output) A small inverter (too small) I have LED lights, a pump for the radiator, gas cooker, obvs water pump for shower, occasionally watch a film on an LED TV, and a laptop. My MPPT controller can have 1 more solar panel at 80watts I think I can make room for 1 more leisure battery. A generator and compressor fridge is too expensive. So what Id like to be possible - is a conventional in house sized fridge & washing machine, new energy efficient. A new Inverter (2kw big enough?) - If required a 4th leisure battery and solar panel. Is there an idiots guide to working this stuff out, so I can really sus what I need/what's possible? Thanks Martin
  4. Has anybody experienced this problem before? Let me know if you need any more information. I am no electrician, so might have used the wrong terminology here and there, do forgive me! We live on a 60ft 2009 narrowboat in a marina, always connected to shoreline when moored. Problem: 230V power will suddenly cut out when connected to shoreline, regardless of time of day/temperature outside/what is running When power has gone off, lights (indicating battery on float charge/fast charge/inverter on) on inverter (Sterling Pro Combi S) not displaying Power can be turned back on by switching from shoreline power to inverter, which comes on, then switching back to shoreline - BUT has also switched itself back on When shoreline power is back on, inverter shows battery is on fast charge - takes approx. 1 hour to reach float/trickle charge Last occurrence: 21:30 Tuesday: 230V power turned off, 12V remained on. Nothing special turned on using 230V apart from usual fridge/freezer etc. Reading on DC Distribution: 12.7 and -07 Didn't check inverter panel Switched to inverter - working, and back to shoreline - working again Checked inverter panel - battery on fast charge (Switched between BATT 1/BATT 2 on DC Distribution. BATT 2 (starter battery) not showing on panel - discovered that was because isolator had been switched on. Switched off isolator and starter battery working as normal, engine started. Probably not related, but noting here just in case.) 22:30 Tuesday: battery on float charge 07:00 Wednesday: battery still on float charge Later on: Switched engine on, unplugged from shoreline, switched inverter on - working 08:50: Plugged back into shoreline while engine still running - no 230V power, 12V still working. Inverter panel lights not showing 09:00: 230V turns itself back on, engine still running, inverter panel - battery on fast charge 10:00: inverter panel - battery back on float/trickle charge Might also be relevant: When connected to shoreline, inverter won't switch on. Will only switch on when disconnected from shoreline - so when we are able to switch the inverter on when the 230V power goes off, does this mean that the inverter isn't registering that it is connected to the shoreline? Is one battery on its last legs/dead and causing the whole thing to cut out/drain so suddenly? I have pics of 230V/12V circuit I can attach if needed. Could there be a problem with an isolation switch for the domestic batteries, hence why 230V still off when engine running/connected to shoreline? Batteries last changed 3-4 years ago. Why did the power cut out while the engine was running, and the battery was on fast charge when it came back on? Why does whole inverter system go off when power cuts out?
  5. From the numerous posts on the net about inverters, it seems most people like Mastervolt and Victron. Clearly they are the Mercedes of inverters. However, is there a budget brand that would be worth the money? Sort of the Toyota of inverters. How about the brand "Sunshine"? Is it wiser to stay with a bigger brand? and if so, which Brand and Model would you recommend for someone looking for 1500w PSW inverter that is on a very limited budget. Also, is there somewhere that sells refurbished inverters, and are they worth looking at? I'm grateful for your wisdom.
  6. Lidl are selling inverters for £22.99 this weekend. 2 questions:- As the Cello TV on my little boat appears to be dead as a dodo, should I buy one of these inverters and buy myself a cheap little 2nd hand TV from somewhere and run it off a battery? Will I be able to connect said inverter up or does it need amazing skills and know-how wot Olive does not currently possess? (New 12v TVs appear to cost loadsa money, hence my questions). Thanks y'all Olive
