  1. Hi, I’ve just purchased my first boat and will move onto it in the next couple of weeks. I’m an office working needing to work from the boat and have a lot of online workshops to do. Therefore good internet/ WiFi is important. I will be continually cruising so won’t benefit from moored WiFi. I also streem Netflix etc. Can somebody advise what my options are? Is the best option a mobile router or is there a cheaper option that will suffice?
  2. We are looking for advice/solutions on 2 areas – Internet and HDTV. We are buying a 70ft narrowboat which will be a liveaboard moored at Roydon Marina on the Essex/Hertfordshire border. We would like the following – a.) A good reliable internet connection (preferably WiFi on board) with enough capacity to download e-mails, a few HD movies and surf the Web. (Our current average usage on land is around 15-20 Gb per month). b.) A good reliable HD TV service/selection. We currently have on land a Virgin HD+ (inc TiVo) system plus a good package for films, etc. However this relies on the fibre optic virgin network which unfortunately is not an option at the Marina. We have read lots of past blogs (some quite old) about this subject, but much of the advice either contradicts other postings or is now out of date, because of the introduction of new packages, roll out of 4G, etc. Where we will be moored for at least 45+ weeks a year has good mobile reception (inc 4G) and very good sightlines to the Southeast (Satellite locations) We have also read about some very expensive installations (£2000+) involving marine autotrack satellite systems and some very inexpensive options (Freeview, Dish in a briefcase, etc.) but again most of these posts are from 2,3 or more years ago. Although we will be moored on a very quiet Marina, we still have considerations regarding “roll” as we walk about the boat and how serious a problem that might be. Good quality fast internet and a good selection of TV channels is important to us so we have a reasonable budget. If we could take our Virgin system with us on board we would, but unfortunately we can’t. Does anyone have any up to date solutions or suggestions?
  3. Firstly this is my first post in the community so hey! I am a recent graphic design graduate along with my girlfriend. After spending some time finding work that suites us both we decided to give a start up studio a go. One decision lead to another and we found our selves looking at Narrow boats. Assuming some how we can find the money through a loan or mortgage to get a Narrow boat, we were wondering if it would be practical to have a liveonboat that could double as a small design studio for us both. Not only does the lifestyle suite us down to a tee, but it could be a really nice, quirky way of setting up a new business (taking the 'studio' to potential new clients etc) which could be a great selling point. Obviously this raises lots of questions, -A wide boat would be best, however this limits our cruising -continuous vs marina -enough internet to keep us both online -would you need extra licensing? Ideally in the future we would love 2 boats, 1 designed as a studio and kitted out as such, and the other a live-on but obviously acquiring 1 boat straight out of uni is hard enough, never mind 2. If anyone has any advice on the idea, or Narrow boating in general it would be greatly appreciated Thanks, Alex
  4. Internet Dongle for Narrowboat usersGetting slightly bored of only being able to use the internet in one room, I’ve invested in this THREE dongle. It basically allows me to connect anywhere, at least anywhere where there is THREE network. Currently, it allows me to connect at 3G speeds, which are fairly good, THREE have the best 3G network in the UK. I did some research on the subject, and it seems that they invested heavily in it. Whilst EE rushed out the 4G. EE 4g ClaimsAlthough EE claim to offer 4G here, I purchased a SIM to try out these claims. Turns out their service was patchy at best, nothing like what their website claimed, (full coverage at 4G speeds), as pictured. This is what it says for DE13 8DZ…. Even if David Bacon uses EE, after the credit ran out, I threw it in the canal! Useless… Mobile phone tethering vs DongleMobile phones are fine for the odd bit of surfing, but if the weather changes, or for no particular reason at all, they can disconnect, which is inconvenient and not what I’m looking for from my internet connection. Tethered mobile phone As you can see, I have to harness my phone to the narrowboat window in order for it to function properly. Mobile technology is particular susceptible to sunspots and solar activity. Three dongle I want something stable, with good speeds and 99% uptime. ChargesThese are the mobile phone tethering charges. You have to top your phone up by the respective amounts before these options become available. Pay per month 1GB. (lasts up to 30 days) 1GB £10 Pay per month 3GB. (lasts up to 30 days) 3GB £15 Pay per month 7GB. (last up to 30 days) 7GB £25 Pay per month 500MB. (lasts up to 48 hours) 500MB £2.99 The cost of the dongle is 12GB for £59.90 which can be topped up by credit card. The dongle itself lasts 12 months from activation. Speeds Dongle connection speeds This is the speeds I’m currently getting on my THREE ZTE MF730M Dongle, roughly what you can expect from a BT package on copper cables. Tethered phone connection speeds This is the speed on a THREE network, 3G enabled tethered mobile phone. You can see the difference – 1MB per second. UptimeThis is more difficult to measure, but from experience, I’d say tethering has pretty low uptime, maybe 70%. Dongle should have 100% uptime, as long as the network is available. It’s not an either/or scenario. I can still use my phone for internet connection, the same as I can still use the marina free wifi. For anyone thinking of doing this, I’d recommend getting the pay-as-you go sim, like this one and avoid getting involved in any sort of obligation to continue or commit yourself. They can be found on amazon. (Taken from http://www.michaeltyler.co.uk)
  5. Apparently I'll have "weak outdoor" 4G coverage from EE, but only 2G indoors. No coverage from Three. Is there a way of boosting the signal in the boat with some sort of device on the roof? Ideally, I'd want to connect a laptop and an iPad.
  6. Hi All hope you are all in fine fettle and are having a suitable Saturday evening GMT that is. Im curious to know if any of your good selves are using either Googlehome or Alexa on your Boats and how you are fairing with them. when we are fortunate to finally climb aboard I intend to control the boat when needed from my phone( ask why if needed) and no not when im in a lock lol. on a personal note reading back on the topics and posts from yester year is very informative kind regards Nut
  7. Just about to buy our first nb and I'm about to come up with lots of questions I'm definitely going to need the internet while I'm afloat - just wondering what alternatives are available and what the pros and cons are. I'm sure one of my supplementary questions is going to be about which mobile network gives the best coverage but no doubt that depends where you are located
  8. Hi, Sorry if this has already been discussed. I need to get a hard wired network connection down from one end of the boat to the other. I have purchased some TP-Link power line adapters which plug into the boats 240v ring main. They don't seem to see one another. Is this not an option on boat ring mains?
