  1. I'm insured with GJW. I asked them if they needed to know about fitting LiFePO4 batteries, and eventually they got back to me and said their underwriters wanted it to be done by a professional. Well that's going to triple the cost, or more. I'm quite capable of doing it myself without starting a fire. What are my options? Do it anyway, and not tell them? Bad because then I won't find out I wasn't insured until I claim - they'll wriggle out of it. Insure with another company and tell them what I'm doing. But if they have the same response, I'm no better off and one insurance company less to try. Insure with another company and not tell them what I'm doing. Then am I back at 1) ? Possibly I can get a surveyor to look at the thing and officially "commission" it, for the insurer's benefit? This doesn't sound promising. What kind of LFP system do I want? Not quite sure, probably a third battery bank and some B2B. Anyway the details of LFP system aren't relevant until I can be sure I'll stay insured. 🙁
  2. Hi What insurance companies are people using to insure their boat? Mine is Towergate I plan to ask for a quote to see if they are more competitive than Towergate. Thanks in advance
  3. Hi everyone, I recently had a flooded engine compartment (fortunately no major damage) from a leaky weed hatch seal and when I approached my insurance company they said had it reached the alternator or battery bank I would not have been covered. As a student studying an engineering degree I want to come up with a solution to this and thought why not expand it to monitor other systems like the battery, shore power or even security, smoke/fire warnings etc. but my worry in considering the costs of R&D would be "Is this even a real problem?". I'd be really interested to hear of boaters' worries on the water, be it security, batteries discharging, shore power failure, flooding in the engine bay (from rainwater or leaky prop seal)? Or is this merely taken as a risk of boating? If anyone has had a major insurance claim I would like to hear about the circumstances so as to know whether a monitoring system could have alerted and possibly prevented it. I would also like to understand the human cost of a claim like being unable to live on your boat, dry dock costs and just how awkward (or otherwise) it proved. I'd be really interested to hear what everyone thinks, be it pleasure boaters, liveaboard canal boats, hire fleet managers etc. as it will help me make a decision about whether I pursue the prototype to commercial launch. Many thanks in advance for all your help. Chris
  4. I was attaching the risers to my boat today and I noticed some damage to my rudder, the top part with the rudder eye in it that stops the rudder from going too far either way was bent over at 90 degrees and the rudder was able to move freely under the counter. The bend looked decidedly cracked and indeed when I tried to bend it back the top part came off in my hand with virtually no force at all. I didn't notice anything when I was moving the boat yesterday but my best guess it that the boat moved too far back while locking down and the rudder was pushed hard against the cill. When I first bought the boat the same part of the rudder was bent over but to nowhere near as large a degree, I straightened it out by putting a bar through the rudder eye and bending it back by hand. My questions at this point are many: How serious is this? I assume that the rudder being able to swing round means that it can make contact with the prop but how likely is this to happen? Is there some sort of makeshift solution to stop this? Will this be an expensive repair? Do I need a new rudder? (the boat has only just been blacked and I wasn't planning on having her out of the water for a few years) Is this the sort of thing I might be able to claim on my insurance? Obviously I don't want my premium to go up but I'm mega skint at the moment, I really can't afford any kind of repairs. Any help appreciated.
  5. Thinking ahead a little to the 30 year survey of my hull. At present it has a 2 pack epoxy zinc coating, 2 coats, onto bare steel and 6 to 8 coats of 2 pack epoxy black. This is all Sherwin Williams epoxy, originally from Leigh's paints of Bolton. The base plate is uncoated. This was done 20 years ago and apart from touching up scrapes it has had little attention over the years, just another coat of the black every 6 or 7 years. The coatings are in excellent condition with no flaking or bubbling. The zinc seems to be well bonded to the steel and has done a great job in preventing rusting. So when it comes to the insurance inspection I am loath to have to grind of loads of patches from the sides for the ultrasonic thickness test. The question is, can this testing be done without destroying the coatings? Has the equipment developed to the extent that it can test through the coatings?
  6. Hello, We are getting our first boat next month and we have a lot of family members and friends who are already asking if they would be allowed to borrow it for a weekend. Whilst I have absolutely no problem lending her out to the more responsible people I know, I'm not quite sure where we stand with insurance. To be clear, we absolutely would NOT be hiring the boat out for any profit. I am only talking about letting mum, dad, best mates go off for a long weekend without us (the owners). They would only pay for any fuel/ pump outs that they used. Would they be covered under our insurance? Do we have to get special insurance or make a request of the insurance company? Or would it be better if individuals got their own insurance for the year (still cheaper than hiring a boat for a weekend)? Any advice greatly appreciated as we need to purchase insurance in the next week. Thanks, Gemma
  7. Hello, I was hoping someone could recommend a home and contents insurer for a houseboat rental. It has a permenant moorning and doesn't move, but I dont need full insurance for the boat because it's only a rental, and the landlord had the full insurance for the boat itself. I seem to be going around in circles trying to find something appropriate. Thanks in advance!
  8. Hi guys After many many years my partner is just in the process of finalising the purchase of a beautiful narrowboat. I did originally post for help but we are sorted now. Apologies to admin but thanks for letting me join the forum. Happy sailing
  9. I live on a narrowboat based at a marina in Cheshire. I have a Boatmail address (Bedfordshire) for my official mail, e.g. driving licence, bank, pensions, etc. I recently took out car insurance cover with Hastings Direct giving the Cheshire address, as that's where I live. They subsequently requested Proof of NCD and driving license copies. Having discovered that my Driving License address (Boatmail) and insured address are different they requested a utility bill. I've just called them to say that I live on a narrowboat based at a marina in Cheshire and they have immediately given me 7 days notice of policy cancellation, saying they cannot help me because I don't live in a brick thing. Do you know of any half decent car insurer who 'tolerates' liveaboards? Thanks guys, Kim
  10. My hull needs a bit of welding doing. Back in the last century i used to be a welder, but never time served and never qualified. whilst i can easily do the welding on the boat, the yard (quite rightly) won't let me unless i have insurance. Does anyone know where i may be able to get said insurance to cover me carrying out "hot works" in the yard?
  11. So who claims off who? It looks like maybe an old Land Rover was the initial cause of the fire, so does everyone claim off of that vehicle’s insurer?
  12. Hi, my first new post here, so please be gentle! I've searched the Search function but I can't find any recent threads on boat insurance so I wondered if any of you kind people could share who you use, experience (good or bad), and how you choose your insurance cover - just by cost, or are there big differences in cover available? Our soon-to-be our boat has been surveyed and we should be the proud owners in a week or so so we want to arrange insurance. OH found boat cover through compare-boat-insurance comparison sites, and also SAGA, but we're interested in other boat insurers as well. The comparison site had prices from £191 up, for a 58' 2005 narrowboat. We'd appreciate any advice you'd share. Many thanks
  13. Hi all, CCers who have a car, what do you do for insurance? I've just been quoted £700!
  14. Just a heads up for anyone who has or is thinking about the low cost third party only policy from Basic Boat. I have just had it confirmed that the policy does not cover towing or being towed by another boat. A fairly common practice on the canals of course, especially for butty owners. Means we have effectively been uninsured for many years, and obviously wont be renewing! Suggestions for an alternative policy? Live aboard + butty workshop/shed
  15. Can anyone recommend/advise comment on insurance which is the next thing I have to arrange? Thanks
  16. Insurance company are requesting the pre-purchase, out of the water, survey results before offering a quote. Is that normal?
