  1. Apologies for the long post but we have a real head scratcher. So we have a 93’ harboro boat. We have done a series of modifications including fitting a Victron multiplus 2 with 7 batteries and a new calorifier (75lt) with a 1kw immersion. We have also removed a very light bench style sofa and replaced with a sofa bed barn sofa all of this fitted to the port side of the boat. We noticed a slight list and so planned to remove a small amount of ballast. On the weekend we noticed that the bilge pump was kicking in and when we investigated it the engine bilge did have sufficient water around the sides of the engine (not under the engine pan). At first we thought that the calorifier had leaked as the pipes leading from the engine to the calorifier were empty - we called RCR who we paid to swap the calorifier and the engineer thought the water in the engine bay (was yellow) was coolant but he couldn’t locate a leak and opted to send another engineer at a different time. The second engineer came and checked the pressure on the water system which remained at 6bar although we couldn’t see any water in the header tank (we could still see water in the header tank when the first engineer came and we haven’t run the engine) anyway the second engineer cleared the water system and said that the water was sitting on the port side swim (uxter) and running down into the bilge and that he felt it was a slight leak on a weld or rust letting water through the uxter plate or through the side. we had the boat out of the water in May and blacked it and we didn’t see anything worrying. We replaced all of the stern gear and had to cut a sufficient amount of steel from the back and this was noticeably thick and well preserved much to the shock of our welder who thought it would be thinner. We have booked to get out of the water to investigate but I suddenly thought of something else. When we run the immersion heater and the victron is running the temp is c32 degrees and higher in the heat that we have had the last few days. Could we be creating crazy amounts of condensation in the bilge (all the heat stays in that area) the cooling tanks are directly located in the same area on each side of the boat Some additional points we do get rain in the bay as the gutters are poorly designed could this increase the amount of condensation? we also painted the bilges and cleaned everything in April again didn’t notice anything untoward, the boat had a survey a couple of years ago and the chines were worn so the previous owner paid to have a full over plate of the base in 6mm steel this was pressure tested and we have the receipts and could see the work when we had the boat out of the water in May we have removed the ballast and no longer list slightly but still creating very small amounts of water from the same place the temp is currently 26 degrees according to the victron and the outside temp is 18
  2. My wee 1968 Springer-effect office boat has a hole. Actually, she has lots of holes and needs complete overplating or new sides. I'm looking for cheap options near Bham to give another lease of life, or innovative bodges to keep her afloat a few more years. Context: Went into dry dock for a check and blacking at Hockley Port. Hull deemed thin and in need of overplating 'soon, in next few years'. I found one proper hole underneath which was plated yesterday morning, but then more leaks appeared as we refloated her - looks like weld on the V has bent and cracked under boat's own weight where it touched the blocks, and there were 2 other small holes that I could find when I took up the floor, so probably more. Plus some very deep nearly-hole pits which wont last long. I'm now beached on our Hockley Port slipway with a bilge pump going so water doesn't come over the floorboards while I ponder options - will be OK here for a few weeks but not indefinitely. What would be the ballpark cost of overplating or replacing everything below the rubbing strakes on a 20ft V bottom boat? It is not a Springer, but looks like one - it has been cobbled together over the years from pieces, and doesn't necessarily have to stay V-bottomed. Any recommendations for people to ring? The guy at Caggys' cant do it, and Tony Fryer at Hawne Basin is away till Friday week - will call him then. But Hawne basin is full on hardstanding at the mo apparently. Icknield Port Loop has just closed We may be able to get it out on slipway with trailer - where would I start asking about that? The winch no longer works on this slipway, so it'd need someone to haul out w vehicle too. So it doesn't necessarily need a 'boat' welder, just someone who could do it on hardstanding. Possible bodges we brainstormed yesterday Concreting bottom as a fix - might sort the bottom and give much needed ballast but not reach the pits above the floor level on the sides. Wrapping with something? Glass fibre etc? Not viable over bitumen I guess Park it in a metal floating tray (the boat has no engine and goes nowhere) The office boat is a luxury - cost me a grand to buy 2.5 years ago and another grand or so to fit out over six months of weekends with a friend, and I have to pay for moorings etc, so I can't pour unlimited dosh into it. My thought is 2-3 grand tops, but if it made it resaleable later, maybe a tiny bit more. Default is scrap, but I love the boat and don't want to. Really annoying thing is that when I bought it knowing it was mainly 3-4mm I wanted to get it overplated while I had it back to steel and *everyone* and their dog told me not to worry - if it had floated for 45 years it would be fine, esp as it will only ever be static, don't waste the money etc etc. Fitting it out was a fun project the first time but the thought of ripping it all ut and doing it all over again - and paying for it again - fills me with dread. AND I've just paid Sherborne Wharf prices to beautifully black and weld a sieve! Grump!! All suggestions - and sympathy - much appreciated Pic of boat, slipway, and sample of hull before blacking, attached.
  3. Wow! So.... the list of jobs as long as all of the amputated and lined up arms of all the lovely people I've ever kissed (but not dismembered) continues to grow. It's four weeks since we bought our boat! Today's job was to inspect and top-up the batteries. We have, or, had, four Trojan 150AH batteries, arranged in 12V parallel. I knew that the wiring was shoddy, as it is everywhere on the boat, but wasn't quite expecting this! This battery was at the accessible end of the bank... as such, it had both positive and negative cables from the solar controller attached to it. There was no electrolyte present when I checked two days ago. The battery drank a good 1.5 litres, and did not smell good. I have looked at the mess of cables that the bank was before, and even noticed that there was corrosion present on this one, though I did not notice the hole. It's possible that the hole appeared in the day since I added water, or that I couldn't see it without pulling it out of the box (fairly hard to get to). The other three batteries in the bank needed topping up, but were not dry. I've now cleaned all the contacts, removed lots of needless cable, and hooked the solar charge cables up to separate ends of the bank. Needless to say, the one with the hole in has been removed from service. Any ideas why this happened? Was it the charging cables attached to + and - of the same battery? Possible leak from a cap?..... it certainly looks like acid....
  4. Hello Everyone, I have had to resort to a post about this as tonight I feel defeated !! after 2 months of battling with a leak in my engine room, I really thought I had it sussed ! - I have had various things to the calorifier done, including expansion tank fitted and all the joints re done, (plumer was doing some other work did this) - I have reseated the calorifier skin fitting with CT1 as I noticed this wasnt very good, - I then found a small hole near another pipe exit, where a spot of weld was missing and filled this with CT1 , really thought this was it. And yet still I find water, and a fair amount !! Alot of people say check the prop but I really dont think its this and I regularly twist the knob, but I am going to attempt to completely repack this at the weekend. For now I have put a bowl under it., I have taken some photos and even a video to try and show the issue and am desperate for some advice, I had the boat surveyed recently and he said everything was in very good conditon so am dubious to think its the hull itself leaking but starting to feel that way. I did run the eberspecher this morning for hot water and it rained lots today. I have a cratch cover and cannot figure it out ! I wondered if it was coming in through the vents but they dont seem wet ? Any help greatly apreciate, it may stop me going totaly mad.
