Hi All, Booked a boat called Little Pea from Clifton Cruisers in Rugby for a week in August. Can you suggest some routes to take from Rugby ? Open to all suggestions for routes: Rings, out and back, long days, leisurely cruising. Hopefully your advice will help my planning. Thanks Mark

Hoping someone will be able to help us..... We are looking at hiring a boat for our first small break away which we hope will be the first of many. We are looking for somewhere not too far to travel from the south of England (West Sussex) we would like a lovely canal with lots of bits and bobs to see with a few bridges and locks to navigate through also would love to do a via duct. We will be needing a couple of boats as there is a few us. Any recommendations would be great. Thank you in advance Jake and Family

A possible venture at some point... Do any companies hire to solo individuals? I fancy a trip somewhere new-ish and may be solo (and might prefer that!). I've a feeling the Ashby Boat Co allow their day boats out for single handed short breaks, and that appeals. Any others? I did a google search and all that came up was a thread on this forum ten years ago!

I am a fairly experienced narrow boater (hiring for a number of years, now a shared owner and also a licensed skipper on the Medway) and next year I am having a three month sabbatical from work, from 1 March to end of May. I am thinking about hiring a boat for, say, 8 weeks in the middle of that period and, for some of that time, it would just be me and my dog. I have single-handed my own boat before so I know this is not a problem. However the long term boat rental companies I have seen so far want to have two people on board and no pets! Does anyone here know of anyone or any company that can offer reasonably priced rental for that time who would accept one man and his dog?

Hello all. We're a group of 5 adults in our 50/60s - two couples, plus 1 and also our dog. My hubby and I have a good deal of river cruiser experience from the Broads (no locks!), but none of us have any useful canal experience. We are hiring from Wrenbury 17th Sept and are soon having a get together to discuss choice of route and catering matters. We have just the week,so doing a ring is not an option. In any event we feel a ring route would put time pressure on us, and being newbies that's not sensible. If we're out/back we can easily revise our turn around point if we're making faster/slower progress than predicted. So, any hints and tips, advice, comment please, such as: Which route to choose? What is a realistic distance to plan for? Is it worth taking fishing gear? On the Broads we fish off the boat of a late pm/evening, but of course this time of year it's likely dark 6/7pm What is the biting insect quotient like in late Sept? Other than "take your time", which we sure will, any tips on mooring/turning the boat? I've seen odd pics of boats moored so far off the bank they need a gangplank to get ashore - is that likely? Anything else you can think of, please share Many thanks for your time and patience!!

A thought... I would like / intend to spend most of the summer on a narrowboat cruising the waterways of England. I am happy to buy a boat and have the funds to do so but really don't know enough about them to know what to buy. I don't even know the difference between a trad, semi-trad and a cruiser stern! I know I want a liveaboard and not a hire boat. A thought occurred to me that here may well be someone out there who has a boat that they are unable to use this summer for some reason and rather than have it sat on a mooring eating money - perhaps they would like to lease/hire it for a few months to make it earn some money? I am happy to pay a sizeable deposit and insurance. I have done a couple of narrowboat holidays in the past so I am not a complete novice. The other thought is the possibility of crewing with someone who is off on an adventure and sharing the costs? The third thought (I am only allowed three...!) is that someone may have a boat for sale? The first two thoughts may suit me best as I intend to winter in the sun and wouldn't mind missing out on winter mooring fees! Is this the right forum/page to be asking this question? Jim
