  1. Hi I’m considering buying a 40 foot narrowboat that needs some work . The survey has found a lot of pitting on the hull base, and recommended over plating possibly the entire length . Amidships to aft are the worst areas apparently She is currently on the Slough arm and I would be bringing her to Oxford. I’m looking for a yard on route or In Oxford area that could quote me for the plating and blacking ? any other advice on this also welcome. J
  2. Hi All, Away for 7 nights from Friday, departing Clifton Cruises Rugby( still undecided on the route to take ??‍♂️, but not Warwickshire Ring (another time with a bigger crew)) Any current information on how busy the Canals around the routes from Rugby are ? How long waiting times for locks ? Any other info from My upcoming trip gratefully received. Thanks
  3. Hello hello all, I am bringing a slightly old, but good condition, 1983 Harborough Marine cruiser stern (with a nicely running BMC 1.8) from Shardlow Marina area down to London at the beginning of May. I am kind of hoping to do it in 11 days, although I can stretch to a couple of days longer, of driving basically every day. I've driven it and it handles nicely - much nicer than the other boats I have driven - but I am really an inexperienced boater. I've done locks, but never alone, for instance. Does anybody have any tips for long cruises, or recommended stopping places along that route (I've had a spy on CanalPlan and it looks like it's basically Grand Union all the way down) or words of warning for certain places? I'd really, really appreciate any advice and stories you might have. I hear the Trent, which I'll have to go on for a little bit, can be quite fast and difficult for new boaters - any thoughts? Also, I just want to say, yes, I anticipate the eye rolls and hostility when it becomes clear I am another CCer bringing a boat to London - I've read the threads and heard from London CCing friends, I know about the lack of facilities, the lack of space, the rookies bashing into things and tying up in terrible places and generally being dicks. Feel free to express more opinions like this, I'll listen to it, but I also would really like it if some people might be able to offer me some useful advice and past experiences.
  4. Dear all, I am a journalist and I am looking to speak with some London boaters for an article I am researching. I have heard from several people over the past few months that London's waterways are becoming more and more crowded. This was confirmed in a report published by the Greater London Assembly in November. From what I hear, it seems that a lot of people are taking to the waterways as a cheaper alternative to rented accommodation (in some instances) or to save for a deposit to buy a house, rather than paying 'dead money' to a landlord. In particular I am looking to speak with boaters: - Who have only recently taken to the waterways - whether they own their boat outright or are hiring from an owner - to find out why - Those who have bought a boat with the express intention of saving for a deposit for a house - Longer standing boaters: have you noticed an increase in traffic, crowded moorings and other related problems such as a strain on infrastructure like water supplies? I am keen to hear your thoughts on what issues are likely to arise on London's waterways in the next few years and what the authorities might do in response. FYI, I don't have a commission yet and I am in the process of doing some preliminary research before pitching to a publication. Thanks for your time. Michael
  5. We have been based at Wigrmas Turn for a couple of seasons now so have done a brief Pros / Cons list to give people an idea. Other moorers there please feel free to add to the list, I am happy that at present there are more in te PROS list then the CONS! PROS Good location, junction of North / South Oxford Canal, Grand Union with easy route to Sutton Stop for the Coventry and beyound as well as Norton Junction for leicster branch and Southern GU Services Berth (Fuel / Gas / Pumpout / elsan) Very good Shore Bathrooms inc showers Moorings lounge area Good WiFi / Phone connection Good parking Good field to walk the four legged crew members away from the cut Easy walk to Napton Villiage for good pub and stores. EAsy drive to local supermarkets for bigger shops if needed CONS Tricky Entrance with cross winds (only marina where I have thought that a Bow Thrust might make sense....) Long thin jettys for the berths with 3 or 4 boats moored each side. These jettys are only just wider than a cart used to take your kit from the car to the boat.... Usually a strong Westerly wind blowing accross the wide marina which can make manouvering on to your berth "a challenge".
  6. Hello. This summer, we have rented a 4 night narrowboat hoilday from Wyvern (Leighton Buzzard). We are brand new to boating. There will be one adult and two kids (11 and 13). We will start on Monday afternoon and return Friday morning. I am hoping for some advice about routes. Realistically, how far might we get and how many hours per day should we plan to spend actually on the move? I will likely be the only person driving the boat while the kids operate the locks. We are trying to decide whether to head North or South from the Wyvren base. We'll be headed out in during the school holidays which I realize is prime season so the canal might be busy, but I think that we would prefer whichever is the quieter route. On the other hand, we are open to advice maybe half the fun is getting to meet other boaters/families? Right now, we are leaning towards heading south towards Berkhamsted since it seems like that might be the prettiest route. On the other hand, we could also go south towards Aylesbury. Is the southern route actually prettier and quieter? I am not sure why I have that impression. Are the locks in one direction easier to operate than the other? Alternatively, we could head north to Gayton Junction so that we could experience tunnels and aqueducts as well as the canal museum. It seems like it might be the more "exciting" route. My kids seem to think that they just want to enjoy the scenery, read a lot, take photos, journal, play lots board games and do some walking. Neither seems that interested in sightseeing or visiting the canal museum, but I'm wondering if we will regret not doing the northern route, which seems like it might have more "things to do and see" along the way. Note, they are too old to be interested in playgrounds and that sort of thing, but I am slightly worried that they will drive each other crazy in that sibling way due to four days of close quarters. In any case, any advice about routes would be appreciated as well as any tips about narrowboating in general. Or I suppose we could toss a coin to decide. Thanks!
