Hi all I'm going to look at a boat at the weekend which has a Lister LT2 engine. I'm new to boats and know next to nothing about engines other than what I was taught in engineering lectures years ago - certainly nothing practically useful. The boat is a 45' narrowboat and my main query is whether the LT2 (which I think is 15hp at max rpm) has enough grunt for powering the boat. I've read on other posts that prop size, torque and rpm are important for working out engine size - can someone explain what to look for? Also, is there anything in particular I should be looking out for when checking out the engine? Thanks!

Hi All, I am looking at possibly purchasing a boat from a friend. I am aware of most of the things I need to be considering in regard to this (safety certificates, hull blacking, etc) but one thing I am concerned about is the size of it's outboard motor. It is a 27' Springer narrowboat and is powered by an 8hp Honda outboard. It is currently only used on short stretches of the Rivers Ure, and Ouse north of York. The engine is felt satisfactory for this, but not for trips South of York. Can anybody provide me with any thoughts regarding this please. In general I might have preferred in-board engine but I have good reasons for considering this boat. Many thanks, Izzy

Hi sorry for so many posts feel a but like a cat chasing tail. Now I see an affordable boat I could add heating too but concerned engine might be out of my novice mechanical league and I’ve not heaps of money as is generally the case so are vintage engines ( im thinking this is one? ) a difficult and expensive option best avoided. Unless experienced and mechanically minded. I’ll post boat link and would appreciate any comments even if not engine related thanks. I’ve gone round the houses and am back to a first pick .. put off by the reputation of marina but if I can use marine lawyer etc maybe. https://www.apolloduck.com/boat/steelcraft-70-traditional/605970

I have just taken my boat into a marina to have a bearing fitted on the prop. They phoned me today saying the bearing have gone in my gearbox and the engine mounts had broken off at the wield. I went to have a look the engine mounts were made of wood and the bearings in the box were ok they had just lined it up wrong. the reason i am telling you this is because if a marina that you trust tell you this you put your hand in your pocket. And they can be wrong. just so you all know i am dyslexic thank you Adam

Hi Just thought I should introduce myself, my name is Andrew Knight from Marine Power Solutions. We have been supplying inboard marine diesels for about 8 years and have sold about 750 in this time. In the new year we are bringing out a new range of dedicated inland waterways engines, these will be keel cooled with water cooled exhaust manifolds, twin alternators, deluxe control panel all as standard. If anyone would like further information, please contact me here or email andrew.knight@marine-power.net. You can visit our website for more information, the pictures of the keel cooled engines are not correct. When we have the new model, these will be updated. The engines will be painted in British Racing green and finished to our high standards. Gearbox options include mechanical or hydraulic versions, our standard fitting is with PRM but any others are available. Many thanks for taking the time to read this, I thought it would be useful to this forum to see that there is an alternative supplier who sells at the right price. Andrew
