Hi All, I have an Eberspacher Hydronic D5WSC running the water heating and radiators on our London based canal boat, with a basic on/off/timeswitch, and I am tempted to back-fit the remote control which lets you switch it on and off remotely with a smartphone app. Does anyone have any experience of these. Do they work OK? And how easy are they to back fit? Is it just a case of unplugging the old unit and plugging in the new one, or is it a big rewiring job? And if I can't back-fit it myself are there any London area engineers anybody can recommend who could do it for me? Thanks fro any help Simon

Hi, As winter approaches I'm determined to get a working diesel heating system, so rather than mess about with 2nd hand units (I've bought two which both have problems), some months ago I took the plunge and bought a brand new, unboxed Hydronic II-H D5Z-H heater off ebay. Since then I've bought both a fuel pump and a non-eberspacher circulation pump and the correct wiring plug. The problem is, I've looked high and low and cannot find mention of this model heater on the Espar or Eberspacher websites, no manual came with the unit and I can't find one online so I'm struggling to work out what wire does what. It seems they've changed colour codes from green to blue. From what little I can find on the internet, this heater gets fitted to certain Skoda and Lexus' as a pre-heater. There are a couple of installation manuals but I can't fathom out the wiring instructions in them. So, has anyone got a wiring diagram for the Eberspacher Hydronic II-H D5Z-H they could send me a copy off please. I almost succumbed to firing up the stove last night, it's only the thought of regulating it that put me off. Thanks in advance Rob

Hello All, I have just bought a 60' narrowboat fitted with an eberspacher unit (d4 or 5). It currently supplies the calorifier, bathroom towel radiator and two electric fan heaters. Unfortunately during its transport the pipes to a fan heater fractured (I think they had been kinked to breaking point previously) and the system is now drained down. I have no experience of using fan heaters and before I go and buy a replacement I just wondered whether to replace it with a radiator. Anybody any experience of both so as to make a comparison? FYI there is a solid fuel stove also. Thanks, Andy

Hi All, Our 63 foot NB has a decent multi-fuel burner that is at present our one and only way of heating the boat. It is great, EXCEPT the heat doesn't make it's way down the length of the boat to the bathroom and bedroom at the stern (burner is near the bow). This is a common issue I understand. We have decided to go for a cheap Eberspacher copy (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/171155028516?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2649) that an acquaintance of mine has fitted and says is very good. We only want to use it for maybe an hour in the morning and an hour in the evening, just to take the damp and chill off the bedroom and bathroom, continuing to use the burner as our main source of heat. We already have rads installed that used to be connected to a calorifier, but which is now connected to our hot water supply. I know this is likely to open up a can of worms, as different folks have different experiences, but generally speaking does this sound like a good route to go down? Is there another option? Someone mentioned a combo-boiler to me, but these are expensive so it seems (> £1.3k) and usually need 230v elec (we are CC'ers by the way, although we do have an inverter, but would rather save our batteries). Our burner does not have a back boiler, although we want to be able to have a blast of central heating in the morning, so this would not really be an option. This is our first winter onboard, so open to advice! Cheers for now!!! ps, can we get hot water from the diesel heater too, in combination with our existing calorifier??

Can anybody help me sort this out? When I bought my boat it came complete with a non functioning Eberspacher D5W. I was told it needed a control board and we agreed a discount on the basis that it wasn’t working and that the part has being sought then when it arrived it would be forwarded to me. However when it did arrive some 3 months later the vendor said I would have to pay for it which is not what I thought we had agreed. I thought the discount was for my inconvenience and the fact I would have to fit it myself or pay someone to do it. Long story short I still have a non-functioning Eberspacher. I have posted 3 pictures of what I have. I do not need automation or remote control or a timer, I am happy to turn it on and off manually. It would just make more sense to me to be able to brew up a tank of hot water without running a 2 litre Diesel engine for a couple of hours. As you can see from the pictures I have a heater, a wall mounted box and a pull switch on a knob. When I connect the heater to the box with the plug and socket by the heater unit (both present and correct) and turn it on nothing happens. So can anyone tell me what is missing and or what I need to do to make this kit functional. In anticipation of your useful advice and replies, Thank you. David

Some of you with Eberspacher heating may be interested in remotely controlling their heating. I have done this using a wifi switch , the Sonoff sv wifi switch is available on line for less than £10 . It needs a little modification but its very easy to do.

Hello, We have just put a deposit down on our first narrowboat and although its are very exciting, its a little daunting so we am looking for some advice. It currently has a Eberspacher hot air heater under the bed - does anyone know about these, is it worth keeping? This is what the surveyor said An Eberspacher D1L hot air heater was installed under the double berth in the forward cabin. There was a thermostat and control unit in the cabin. Ducting was no longer connected to vents and some joins in ducting had been made with duct tape. Recommendation Either decommission Eberspacher hot air heater or commission a qualified engineer to inspect the heater and its installation prior to its use. We are just wondering whether its worth keeping hold of and getting serviced or whether we should just get rid of it? Also any recommendations for an electrican and also a gas engineer in london would be very much appreciated. Thanks for your time. Emily & Juan

Hello Just when i thought I'd got our Eberspacher D4 Hydronic sorted out ... something new, which I have not seen discussed elsewhere (apart from maybe in a section of the Murkin Bros' site under 'Weird Faults'. Ebbie had failed a few times so took it to bits and found it was in a bit of a state - badly coked, gaskets falling to bits, glow-pin screen coked and blocked. Sorted all of these out. Still not happy on restart and showing a code 052 so replaced (rather than just cleaning) the fuel intake filter and made sure no gunk in the fuel intake pipework. Now it starts up, runs for about 25-30 minutes, though not sounding 100% happy - labouring a bit. Then smokes, makes a booming/honking sound which causes a bit of vibration, and cuts out. Error code 030 which is: "Fan impeller of combustion air fan motor blocked (frozen, dirty, stiff, lead chafes at end of shaft …)". There doesn't appear to be any blockage or damage to the fan, and I am puzzled as to why it runs for the length of time it does before conking out. Any experience of this or similar problems? I've learned that error codes tend to report only the last in a sequence of things going wrong (!) so trying to understand what root cause of this might be ... wiring/connections to the impeller motor? Any thoughts? Before I go and buy a whole new impeller unit which I might not actually need? Patrick

Hi everyone, I have a couple questions in relation to fitting eberspacher heaters in smaller older boats which I'm hoping the wealth of experience of the forum can assist with. I've been planning through the winter months the fitment of an eberspacher diesel warm air system while out of the water in spring for our recent acquisition. We'd just like to extend our season a little, not into the depths of winter just so we can enjoy the nicer days of early autumn that would perhaps normally be a bit chilly overnight etc without some form of heating. I have spent quite a bit of time going through BSS regs, advice and forums on here and think I have got a good idea of approximately where to fit which on a 24ft cruiser is erm interesting. The rear lockers are all but out of bounds - battery gases in the rear left, gas in the rear right and an outboard and its tank in the centre behind the transom. We have a tall hanging wardrobe which only accumulates general bits of everything so have allocated a spot there where I squeeze it in - the down side here will be the noise but int he absence of anywhere else to fit it I think this is my only option and don't want end up having move it at our next BSS examination. I think I've got to the bottom of fire resistant hoses etc and proprietary connections rather than a bit o pipe pushed inside another 'bit o pipe' What I think are my last questions (which may then bring more) are: Is there any specific regulation or guidance on height from water line and distance from windows etc for exhaust outlet through the hull (my thinking here is as far away from both as possible) but if I'm physically restricted I'd like to ensure I don't encroach on any minimum distances. I have purchased a plastic (polyprop?) tank of Eberspacher 10 litres I believe but can't ascertain if this is acceptable within BSS. BSS goes into lots of detail about filler caps of plastic tanks being acceptable rather than an external vent etc etc. I will probably as I get further into have a Mild Steel tank made to fit somewhere snug below the floor but keep to around 10-15 litres for space and to keep within guidance of BSS with a proper external filler but I'm a way off that - probably next season that part. Has anybody used one of these tanks? Had any problems with BSS etc? Hopefully someone may be able to assist or share tips from fitting there own etc. Many thanks, Dave

Hello, I hope you can help. I have a single coil calorifier heated from the engine. I also have radiators heated by an eberspacher. They are on separate systems. Is it possible to connect the two systems so that the calorifier can be heated from both sources? As the eberspacher is mounted higher than the engine, would there be a problem with water from the radiators circuit causing the engine cooling circuit to overfow? Thanks!

Hi there, I’ve got bit of an issue with my Webasto Heater. It’s a 90 St version (9.1Kw). It’s been working well for years and I never had any issues with it. I always made sure it was working hard, I would only switch it on for 1,5 – 2 hrs max at the time, so I doubt it was ever going to “low flame” setting. Since last week it’s been switching off due to overheating. I vented the system, flushed it, vented again (numerus times) but still the same things happen. I checked the water pump, it seems all good, there’s a good flow and I cannot see anything wrong with it. What basically happens is Webasto runs for 20-25 minutes (sometimes longer, sometimes shorter) and then it seems that the coolant after the unit boils and the unit switches itself off. I think that it generally heats up the entire systems quicker than usual, it is quite of a big system, 6 rads, towel rail and a calorifier – give or take 100 lts of coolant so it was normally taking around 1hr or more for the rads to get proper warm, this now happens after 20 -25 mins. Any help will be appreciated!

Erbespacher problems, any experts out there? Have a D5-WSC and after running for varying times it just cuts out. The timer seems to be ok. There are fault codes 52 and 30 showing, have seen what they mean but they add little. If I switch off the heater and turned it back on it works ok then again shuts off at varying time intervals....any ideas?

When I moved onto the boat I inherited a certain amount of 'creative' plumbing. There's a double coil calorifier heated from the engine and an Eberspacher 4 hydronic (it has an immersion as well). The Eberpacher used to feed a run of radiators the length of the boat as well as the calorifier. There's a header tank too and a mass of old capped polypipe, strange little t-junctions and spurs that don't seem to lead anywhere and so on. It looks like it was put in by Central Services from 'Brazil' on a bad day. Well, I finally got fed up with the superfluous radiators and ripped them out (the stove does a much better job of space heating) but I'd like to keep the Eberspacher to just heat the water in the calorifier from time to time - so I don't have to run the engine when I'm moored up. Also I've got a timer on it so I can heat up a tank of water for early morning use. Does anyone have a clear illustration of the minimal, safe arrangement of pipes and valves that I'd need to just use the Ebbie to heat the calorifier without short-cycling, tripping out etc? I assume a balancing valve on the way in (and out?) and the header tank still included. Most of the diagrams I can find (including on manufacturer sites) either show loads of radiators, bypass circuits etc or are alarmingly vague about valves etc. (i.e. don't show any). Hi all, Hopefully someone knows the answer to this. I have an Eberspacher that heats a calorifier. I run the Eber for about an hour and we get a decent amount of hot water for showers. My issue is the amount of time it takes for the hot water to reach the taps. I measured it this morning and it took 12 litres of water before it turned warm. This is the same every time the first person wants hot water. Can anyone suggest why this would happen? The shower is quite close to the calorifier, just a bedroom in between, so I'm finding it hard to make any sense of why it takes the amount of time. Please help!

Hi all. I'm writing this in a hurry so haven't time to trawl through what is probably a huge number of posts re the installation of Eberspacher heating. Do redirect me with links if you know where my thread is already answered. :-) I live aboard a 70 footer at Droitwich and the Glembring stove I have installed, with its back boiler, is reasonably efficient but due to the tiny hole designed into the stove lid, the entire boat and its contents, including me and my Pooches, have a permanent whiff of diesel about them. As a student nurse, I can no longer go to work smelling like a fuel canister! I'm considering installing Eberspacher heating for radiators along the boat and a solid fuel stove in the main cabin. The boats I've stayed on where these are installed smell like homes and not garage forecourts! This is my dream.... What are you experiences of Eberspacher or similar systems, have you installed it and had a nightmare or a genuine success? Do let me know. Cheers. D
