Hey All Happy FRIYAY, hope your all well. Looking at the peoples opinions on renovating/refiting a 51ft Dutch Barge as It currently has a wooden top that is rotten, and I have been looking at getting it refitted with a steel top, this will cost around 25-30k. The reason I ask peoples opinions is primarily due to the state of the hull, When I got it surveyed in late 2022, it noted some area’s below 4mm, worst was 3.8mm. The boat was built in 1912, and has had some overplateing already. As well it noted some blown rivets and pitting. Here is a link to a album of photos showing it out the water: https://photos.app.goo.gl/5ZgBVvMA4wjyc7Uk9 —- Now this is the crux of what I am interested in peoples opinions. Is it worth spending so much renovating this boat considering the state of the hull? Or is actually that hull ok, so long as I look after it? Tldr; is it a good idea to spend 50-60k Rennovating this barge, or am I better off spending my money getting a better hulled boat? Will this Hull last say 40 years? — I spent 17k on this boat, and its got me this far happy with that, however now I need more from my living space and as such should I seek to continue living on this boat I would need to get it a new top which is 30K, and then refit the interior as well as add solar etc. Keen to hear peoples thoughts Many thanks

Replating on the inside does it effect boats gravity?
Judith Adams posted a topic in New to Boating?
Hi we have bought a lovely Westlander Dutch Barge circa 1930. Following a survey the hull's new plating showed approximately 2.8 thickness replated steel. We've gutted it for a full refit, having it blasted before steel repairs. Question: we are going to replate 3mm inside because the inside steel has rusted. Will this effect it's gravity. Its has 0.5 draft and can only be suitable for river cruise. Don't want to compromise it's stability in the water further. I hope that makes sense?- 48 replies

Hi there, I am completely new to boating and want to buy a boat to live upon. A friend of a friend is selling his small 2006 Dutch Barge (33x10) for £12,500. It needs its engine fitting and a new cam-belt as well minor work doing inside (it's about 85% complete). I have had a look at the boat and really like it, its plumbing is all in order and its electrics need tying up a bit. I have some questions as I completely new to boating. The boat is currently moored in Christchurch Meadows in Oxford, how feasible is it to move this boat around given its beam width? I would ideally like to move it to Enslow marina and live on it there. I have been told the hull is 6mm thick, is this too thin? All in all any feedback or advice would be really helpful as I am totally new to this. Thanks, Laura

Hello, I was wondering if anyone has had experience of securing finance on an old boat (potentially 100 years old). We have a large deposit which may or may not help. Thanks

Hello, Just looking for a bit of advice from the people in the know. I am considering buying a dutch barge to CC through the Lea, Regents and Grand Union canals. The only problem I can foresee is that the air draft is 3m which according to Canal Data is too high for all these canals. It's a really great boat and the wheelhouse forms the main saloon so I would need to keep it. There is a bit of lea-way to lower the roof - has anyone had any experience in doing this? Or making it collapsable? The wheelhouse is steel as well so I'm guessing this would make it more expensive? Any help/advice would be gratefully received. Thanks
