  1. HI All, We are thinking of replacing our old and slightly shabby cratch cover. This one was hand made by the person who previously owned the boat. It is made from a big piece of most likely fairly cheap vinyl/plastic. We were thinking of going for the same stuff to keep down costs, or maybe someone knows of a reasonably priced alternative? If we take the old one off, measure the maximum area, but a piece, then overlay one on the other and cut it to size (folding over and gluing to strengthen hems/seams), then it shouldn't be that difficult, no? Anyone had experience doing this, any advice etc?? And if anyone knows of a decent supplier that would be much appreciated. Cheers!!
  2. Hi, Does anyone know of anywhere in the London area you can get professional cratch cover repairs? Or alternatively any recommendations outside of London where I could get it sent off to. My sewing machine can't handle the thickness of the material and some of the seams need resewing better than I can do by hand (stern cratch on a semi-trad). Thanks all, Lucy
  3. Hi all, I am currently in the process of renovating my hardwood cratch, which is weathered, and wondered what advice other members have regarding the final finish? According to the previous owner, the cratch of Delta Queen has been treated with teak oil every now and again. However the exposed surface at the front of the boat is very weathered. Once I have finished sanding off the weathered surface, should I apply teak oil again, or would it be better to use Sadolin or a similar stain & preservative? If I use teak oil, how often should I reapply it to avoid having to keep sanding back a weathered surface? Thanking you all in advance. Alan
  4. We have a wooden cratch with canvas covers with integral soft plastic windows with zipped over covers. This covers our prow deck where the floor level is the same as the rest of our boat with bench seating running round the prow and a table giving us a useful dining area. Problem is that despite good quality canvas covers and copious PTFE spraying when it rains heavily water does get in, its damp and the upholstery is getting watermarked. It's a great little facility in the summer but although we have a couple of fin radiators in there it can still be a bit chilly in winter. We are considering replacing the canvas with some form of rigid structure with double glazed windows so the area is warmer, less damp and we can use it more.....a bit like a conservatory ! Anyone out there have anything like this or seen on other nb's pls ?
  5. Hi, When a fellow boater recommended I best not moor beneath a large (fire-damaged) willow, I should probably have heeded his advice, lol. However, the good news is that no-one died nor was injured. The tree came down in the night in a storm while I was asleep. Still stuck after lots of branches removed but I managed to twist myself out by steering hard right with high revs, and the tree fell off into the river. The other good news was that the cratch board and cover (by Kinver Canopies) was robust enough the hold the weight of the tree without damage, which was quite the surprise. Anyway, lesson learned ? - Mike
  6. Hi, Having recently purchased our first narrowboat, we are looking to get the zips and some of the press-studs on our cratch cover repaired. So far we have not been able to find anyone within a reasonable distance to us. Any ideas anyone? we are on the Caldon canal so not far from Stoke-on-Trent. Thanks Andy
  7. Hello whilst Mr C is being painted we are looking into having a new cratch cover fitted as ours is leaking like a sieve and the water ends up running through the pipes from the cratch back to the engine bay so its not ideal. But my question is that we have the typical Weltonfield narrow cratch board (that doesnt extend over the gunnels) and ive noticed that most weltonfields have a cover that matches that profile ie. not covering the gunnels, at some point there has been an new cover made in the more common manner of extending it over the side but because of the board it just sags and generally looks sad ive seen two others like it also and one was a brand new cover and neither has looked great. Has anyone with experience of the weltonfield Cratch got a reason to have another 'normal' one made rather than one that matches the board that it would have had originally ill put a couple of pictures to show what i mean. this is what we have now. and this is what most weltonfields have or were built with i like the idea of going with second style because it will mean that the cover doesnt need to be rolled up to get onto the bow for the water tank. but just wondered if anyone with any experience of them has any advice, as i have spoken to one cover maker and they said it would be a bad idea as you would get alot of rain come in from underneath and they said that all covers should cover the gunnels. sorry for being so rambling all i can say is i'm tired and confuse myself lol!
