I'm very new to the boat would, I know very little. Any information would be helpful I'm an architect student and a design consultant. I had a friend of mine who has just brought a 12ft widebeam and it's between 50-60ft long, he asked me to design the interior for him. I was shocked at the space inside and after talking about how much the shell cost him and how much it costs to live on the water, I fell in love with the idea. I love small spaces, but i dislike narrow spaces, so a widebeam is perfect for me, but I don't see the point in having an overly long boat. I wanted to be informed or advised is there anything wrong or disadvantage of having a widebeam only 30ft long? My friend tells me that will be a maximum of 24ft living space. I have put this in a CAD programs and come up with a few designs. I believe I could easily live comfortable and happily within this space. I'm worried about electric and water consumption. I like to shower every day. I also pretty much spend all day working on my pc and laptop, I'm worried the tv/monitor will consume to much power. Any advice or any information will help. I don't plan of paying for mooring, I like the idea of traveling up and down a lock each week or two

Hello all I am looking to get a new build sailaway boat and have had some quotes already, some very reasonable, some incredibly expensive. The company I am looking at is http://www.burscoughboatcompany.co.uk/. They have been runner ups/winners at the Crick show and have a good turnaround time. Is there anyone on this forum who would be interested in giving me a quote? I do have a more detailed spec but in a nutshell it is a 13m L X 3m W widebeam trad stern I am after with a minimum of a 65bhp engine (it will be on a marina off the tidal part of the thames). Let me know as want to get the project started as soon as really Hope to hear from all you boat builders, some of you may have heard from me already if operating a website. Regards Bryan

Hi All, I'd like to rip apart my existing well deck and re-build it much better and I'm struggling to find ideas on t'internet, especially with photos or diagrams. I like to sit out on my well deck when the weather's good, I have no real need for storage and I'd like seating for guests. I'm pretty good at DIY and would welcome some suggestions (with photos or diagrams if possible). The photos here show my current well deck. It is 4 feet from front to back. As you can see, I have a small diesel tank on the starboard side which can't be moved. On the port side there is a storage locker with 'seating' on top, but I'd like to rip this out. Any help or suggestions would really be appreciated. Many thanks Adam

Hi there, I’m fairly new to boat building and am in the initial stages of fitting out my boat. I did have a look but couldn’t find anything on the following questions. I have a couple questions that I could really use an experienced boaters expertise on: I currently have a 55hp canalline engine onboard with the normal two alternators, the domestic is a 12v 175A alternator. My first question is: does anyone have experience with replacing it with a larger alternator? For example a 24v 400A alternator? If yes, how did it go? How did you mount it? I appreciate running your engine is not pleasant for boating neighbours and know about the restrictions in time when running it. In order to prevent the alternator from running at idle and not pulling through that many amps, is there anything stopping me disengaging the gear wire on the engine and throttling a little bit? At the moment the main thing I’m trying to work out is if I should fit a bigger alternator and run the engine for 45mins a day or go with solar and run the risk of it getting stolen in London. I’m sure I will have loads more questions in the future but to start with thanks for your help with these two.

Hi Guys, I am looking at UK builders (for cost and quality) for a widebeam to transport into Ireland. We don't have many canal boat builders here in Ireland so I looked further afield... So will I pay tax on import or if the tax is paid in the UK are there no additional import costs? In the meantime I have emailed revenue/customs to check to see what they have to say, but thought I would double check here if anyone has experience there. Also does anyone know if UK 'zero-rated' boats could apply in my case?
