Hello all. I am new to this, having only recently had the funding available to seriously consider narrowboat owning (although been a 20+ yr dream), and I've just started looking over the last few weeks, but have been keeping an eye out for a while on apollo duck etc and am finding boats are sold before I've had a chance to arrange a viewing. I arranged to see one last week, and then it sold, so had to cancel before appointment, then went to see one on Monday, spent about 3 hours with the owners, was very keen, put in a potential offer (only 5% below asking price), was told they had other viewers due, but they'd get back to me after, yet I haven't heard anything, so I guess they're not interested. I know this is only a small example, but that's 2 gone for me in just over a week :-( I had read it was a buyer's market at the moment, so am surprised to see so much interest in the boats I have been interested in. Am feeling everything getting sold, unless I jump on it immediately. Is this just me, or is the market changing, or is this just how boat buying is. Maybe I've just started at the wrong time. Anyway, glad to have joined the site, even though feeling a little de-flated and looking forward to reading and learning, and eventually living aboard. Cassi

Hi. We, after years onboard, are thinking about selling our boat and buying a house (for a number of reasons, none of which are the topic). I’m wondering if anyone has done this before as usually it seems the other way around. We both have good jobs, a permanent mooring (so a council tax/electoral roll record, etc for a mortgage app) but the problem is we’ve never lived in a house. So we thought the only way to do it was to sell the boat, move into a rented house and then use the sales money for a deposit when we find the house we want. But recently I’ve looked up ‘sales chains’ and am wondering if we’d be able to be pre-approved for a mortgage and use the boat the same way as an unsold house. Has anyone any experience of this? To be clear, my research makes me think we could say that the boat is worth £x amount and were mortgage free, so we’d be pre-approved, could make an offer on a house, and then sell the boat and when it sells, finalise the purchase on the house with the balance from the boat sale plus the mortgage.... any other experiences or advice greatly received. Thanks. Also, the reason we don’t want to move into rented accommodation is we have multiple dogs and very little furniture so it would be difficult to find someone to rent us a furnished house or garden apartment with animals... though not impossible of course, and if worst comes to worst we’d do it as although it may seem ‘wasted money’ for rent, that’s essentially what our mooring fees are at the moment. Thanks in advance for any advice.

Hello, I'm very much a newbie after some expert opinions please. Me and my fiance are buying our first narrowboat and looking to become continuous cruisers. We've been to see quite a lot of boats now, but saw this 70ft Jonathan Wilson boat yesterday and are considering putting in an offer. https://www.whiltonmarina.co.uk/used-narrowboats/details/3719.aspx It's with Whilton Marina and they state they don't have a huge amount of history about her, so no recent survey to speak of, BSC till July 2018 (but they will issue a new one complete with sale) and she was last blacked and had anodes checked in 2013, so I guess that this is due again pretty imminently. She's got Eberspacher central heating and a Bubble stove at present. She seemed clean and dry inside, but I noticed that the wood frame which sits around the internal windows seemed to be missing and I could see the polystyrene insulation (this was dry to touch). The sale would include a new BSC, engine service (a BMC 1.8 engine) and also if anything was found on survey which affects its current insurability they will do the works for free. My concerns are that that the engine is old and might not be ideal for continuous cruising among other things, but my main concern is our lack of experience when it comes to buying a boat! Any opinions or recommendations gratefully received, thank you very much !
