  1. Can I ask for advice on what top coat paint people would recommend for a wet bathroom floor? Rust had come through the previous one, which I’ve sanded back and treated and now primed ready for painting. It doesn’t need to be particularly slip resistant though that would be beneficial.
  2. Dear NB builders, Stop making narrow boats with a middle[ or anywhere] open plan walk through toilet, I wanna spend a few bob on a newish boat 57 to 60 and they are so popular in builds, but so user unfriendly if u don't boat alone. NB s have been going yrs without this pop design, first I hired in early 80s had that type but side shutter used just for showering wet room type, why have a bog in middle of boat open, how many times have you needed to walk through middle. It must be a man design without a woman First thing I look at now is walk through toilet/shower, then dismiss that boat, grrr. I have wanted to spend 80 k on a boat for a yr now, and not seen more than one in all that time, I will look another yr then give up on higher spec/ newish I want a 57 to 60ft Within last four yrs build Pumpout toilet No L shaped seating Reverse layout-galley,pullman-toilet/ showr-bedroom-living area There isn't any new ish of that design. That's b4 heating engine electrics water etc Seems obvious to me but so few on sale
  3. Hi All! My wife and I have a 63 foot narrowboat. We recently had a Paloma hot water boiler replaced (the old one didn;t work when we bought the boat a few months ago). The Paloma is situated in the galley, around one third of the way along the boat from the bow. The water pump is on the inside of the boat, on the other side of the wall from the cratch. Our bathroom is another third of the way down the boat. When we turn on the hot water tap in the bathroom the Paloma (set on highest temp) ignites (only when water turned on full) and we get hot water - but too hot to shower under. If we turn the cold water on - even just a little - then the Paloma stops burning (presumably because of a lack of water pressure), so then we have cold water. If I turn down any of the settings on the Paloma (down to 'two flames', or down to anything less than '5') then it does not ignite even when hot water tap is turned on full and cold water off. So, we have either hot or cold water, but no happy medium. We are new to narrowboats! Can we turn the water pressure up on the pump? Will this cause leaks if we do? Can we make the Paloma more sensitive to water pressure? Is there anything we can do to solve this?? Any advice would be much appreciated!!! Cheers!!
  4. We bought this wooden Edwardian washstand for our loo, and I plan to plumb in a small sit-on-top basin and tall mixer tap on the top. I like the patina on the wood, but I also don’t want it to start looking crappy in the occasionally steamy environment — from using the quadrant shower. I’m not sure how Edwardian cabinets would have been finished originally — it looks like some kind of fine varnish. I put drops of water on various parts of the top, upper sides, etc. and left them there for about 20 minutes — and find they wipe off without a mark. I’m also not sure what type of wood it’s made of. I originally thought oak, but now not sure because the exposed grain edges are very dense and smooth. I reckon I have three options: 1) Do nothing to the surface (and see how it goes) 2) Clean the wood as much as I can and give it multiple coats of a good, satin varnish 3) Sand it back a bit and oil it with multiple coats of Danish Oil (which I’ve used elsewhere in the boat). Anybody have any experience of Edwardian furniture finishes … or using wooden furniture in bathrooms?
  5. Hello everyone, I just bought a narrow boat from the 80s, moored next to little Venice and I would like to completely redesign it which imply: -move the bathroom and completely change it -move the kitchen as well and add appliances -new floor -new bed I am not going to do the work myself completely, because I am new to boating, and I really need someone to coordinate the whole renovation in order to do a nice job. Can you recommend anyone that has done a complete refit of a narrow boat and could help me? thanks for your help
  6. Hello all! This is my first post - I imagine it may become the first of many! I was just wondering if anyone had any experience of having refits done at Springfield Marina in London (on the Lee river)? I'm getting my bathroom redone, and have been quoted at £312 per day (this is for two people to work on the refit). This seems pretty expensive but am struggling to get other quotes who fit in with my availability. Does anyone have any experience of having a refit done with Springfield? They aren't coming up smelling of roses with the current research I'm doing, but I remain hopeful! Many thanks in advance! Sophie
  7. The toilet it in my 22ft boat is small, but adequate for the toilet that's in there, but I'd like to add a makeshift shower. I don't have running warm water, so I'm thinking of using a pump pressure washer spray that you'd see in Screwfix. I say pressure washer, but it's nothing major. I could fill it with warm water and use it as a shower. BUT... it's how to try and incorporate it into my tiny bathroom without flooding the place, or getting it damp. My toilet is like this: I've no idea what is under the flooring or the step that the toilet sits on. And I really don't want to rip the step out as it's quite well in there and the flooring goes under it. The door to the toilet is a folding door. The toilet is, as you'd imagine, standalone and completely removable. The highest part of the ceiling is just an inch above my head, and that's the roof of the boat. Can't change that! I was thinking of, basically, covering the place in overlapping lino, plenty of silicon sealant on any joints, and have a basin on the floor to catch any water. That way I could sit on the pan while having a shower. Any of your good selves have a better, easier, solution? I'm looking for a quick fix that doesn't involve ripping everything apart.
  8. Back on the wetroom subject. We hired a narrowboat last year, we were so impressed with her and we had a great week. We enjoyed it, and many previous canal holidays, so much that we have now bought a narrowboat that we are currently re-fitting in reverse layout. The boat that we hired last had a vinyl floor (with vinyl that curved up all walls ans was neatly welded at the mitred corners) wetroom which was fantastic, very clean, modern and functional. I would like to put one in our boat 'Garoline'. I am hoping that someone on here might have some photos or details of something that they have seen or have themselves and possibly details of a decent vinyl wetroom installer ? Many thanks Gary, Caroline & Garoline.
