  1. Hello, We are a group of University students in Bath and we are conducting some research regarding the waterways and associated green public space in Bath. To do this we were hoping to get in touch with people who live along the Avon in Bath! We are particularly interested in the proportion of permanent boater residents, the type of communities, and other rules and regulations around the area. In addition, we have a questionnaire if you do live in the area! (I have attached it to the link below) Please send your responses to greenequityvip@groups.bath.ac.uk Thank you ever so much and hope you get in touch! 2. We are fitting out a boat so its bare bones and one thing we have the space for and really feel like we would get plenty of use from is a bath. We have a 1000L watertank. I am just trying to get to grips with what the hot water set ups are in boats. We do have a diesel heater which came with the boat which needs to be set up. I dont fully understand it that would need a calorifier to have the water stored in or can have instant hot water. Main thing im worried about is having to have two large calorofiers to fill the bath. I know also theres LPG boilers you can get. perhaps having the bath hot water run off that would be the best option? What sort of set ups do you bath owners have?
  3. Hi, A little one for outside the box thinkers please. I realise a bath on a boat is a ridiculously indulgent waste of water. I also realise the folly of putting a bath on a boat in terms of the space it consumes. I am installing a full sized corner bath with a capacity of around 200L on Helena during a major refit. I am trying to think of ways to reliably, safely and "legally"(in terms of the BSS) produce enough hot water to fill the bath. Currently I am considering fitting an auxiliary water tank of around the same capacity of the bath to extend our tank capacity enough to allow for it without affecting our bunkering routine too much. and I am considering ways of heating this "buffer" tank before using it to bathe. A few little boaty tech facts about Helena... I have a large (around 700L) water tank, my hot water cylinder is a standard horizontal calorifier, can't remember the capacity, not much! It is currently heated either by a 1kw immersion heater (rarely), the webasto water heater (usually) or the engine. Fairly conventional stuff with exception to the cold storage tank. If i were to sneak in a 250L plastic tank under the new wardrobe floor I could theoretically heat the water that is in it and specifically use it exclusively for our bath. I would obviously have to have it open vented, but I think I could easily add a balance pipe to the main tank to fill it when we bunker, and gravity would refill it as we use it. I am considering a second hand second webasto to this end. My calculations seem to suggest a 5kw heater will take approximately an hour to produce a 30c rise in that kinda volume of water. Other things I have considered are of course an instantaneous gas heater (an 11L morco would only take 20m to fill the bath directly fed with "cold"water, but at what cost in terms of gas) which is certainly still an option. If I choose to heat the tank of water rather than the instantaneous option of course the tank would be insulated and in order to stop convection mixing the water into the main tank a one way valve could be fitted on the fill (necessary?) I have also considered the bonus that, if the webasto/tank option is viable I can install some evacuated tube solar hot water on the roof of the boat and pre-warm the tank or even heat it in summer, via a plate heat exchanger. I realise if I do either of these things there will have to be a way of getting the tank to above 65c weekly to remove the risk of legionnaires. Please understand that I am well aware of the folly of the above, please keep the discussion based expanding on my thoughts and let me know your thoughts on where I would stand with the BSS compliance. Thanks in advance, Bex
  4. Hello! Can anyone recommend any boat surveyors in the Bath/Trowbridge area? Personal recommendations are the best! Thanks alot Amber
  5. Hi everyone so I was looking at the set up for the bath as the surveyor recommended fitting a non return valve. The thing that I have a question about is the point where the bath plug joins the hose which attaches to the pump. It seems the pump hose is screwed directly to the plug drainer and I'm concerned that this will mean loads of bits going in to the pump. I don't know how you would fit a trap though because the bath has no space under it. I don't know about this set up so any experience would be helpful. (Hope my description is clear enough I don't know right words for all this stuff yet!) Thanks
  6. Hello We are getting a wide beam canal boat built and are planning on constantly cruising and would really appreciate some advise on a few things! I was hoping to have a full length bath onboard, and 4-6 radiators but I have now been told that unless you have a diesel run boiler radiators are pretty useless, and you’d have to have a huge boiler to be able to heat enough water for a full length bath. Anyone have any experience with either of these? Is it possible at all? Are diesel boilers very expensive to buy and run? Would I have to have a huge boiler? Also I want to be able to use kitchen appliances fairly regularly (nutribullet - 600w magimix - 1100w) and wanted to have low watt floor lamps and maybe some fairy lights (not to run all the time, but when i want to make it super cosy) - I've been told this wouldn't be possible but I've seen lots of boats with these things in them! Do you have to have a very high watt inverter (and is this very expensive?) Or would I have to get a generator? Or are these things only possible to have if you have a mooring and are connected to the grid? I have been quoted £4800 to have the boat painted which seems slightly ridiculous to me! Does anyone know how much it would cost to employ someone to come and paint an overcoat and then do some stencilling? Does the price we’ve been quoted sound right? Really appreciate any advise or guidance! Thanks :-)
  7. So here's my dream - I'm on my boat, lying in a bath, with a little porthole, or inched open curtain, watching the swans glide by. I know that there are a lot of barriers to overcome in pursuit of said dream - but I'd like some advice. First of all circumstances - I'll almost certainly be buying something affordable for now, and then looking to adapt it to my ideals further on down the road. How realistic is it to: a) extend a bathroom to accomodate a full sized bath (obviously borrowing space from adjacent areas)? install a larger water tank (I have 1000l in mind)? What would you say is the minimum boat length that would make this a feasable reality? Any advice on heating that amount of water also appreciated. I think (hope?) I'm fairly realistic about this - I'm picturing a bath about once a week or so (in addition to showers), and I'm aware that I'll be sacrificing valuable living space for this extravagant little luxury! eta: didn't really intend that smiley, but I guess water tanks are pretty cool!
  8. Curious to know peoples opinions on this very strangely written article http://virtualmuseumofbath.com/2013/06/10/weir-protest-barge-shifts-position/
