  1. I've hijacked David's post from the MAIB report thread to introduce the topic. There been lots of discussion about what alarms to buy. The BSS and CoGDEM have been working the information that hopefully will give more advice. To be absolutely clear it is now possible to purchase certified alarms suitable for boats and having boat installation instructions. The latest packaging for alarms certified to BS EN 50291-2:2010 should have the details. The information on our CO web-pages about where to place CO alarms has been written with and approved by all the major manufacturers who are members of CoGDEM. But before you rush out and buy a new alarm, if you already have an Kitemarked alarm and it was tested to BS EN 50291, or BS EN 50291-1, the CoGDEM/BSS advice is to keep that alarm, test it routinely and when it needs replacing, choose a unit showing it was tested to BS EN 50291-2 and suitable for boat use. Most of the major manufacturer alarms certified and tested to BS EN 50291 are the same products/models now having gone through further testing and are certified to BS EN 50291-2. The later standard takes account of the temperature range, humidity, vibration etc encountered in the marine use. We have published the latest CoGDEM list here CO Alarms for boats advice Please, please, please remember - CO alarms are a backstop, there to help keep you alive should something go wrong. Prevention is the best possible route. These are our ten tips which if followed, should help reduce the risk of CO poisoning on your boat All the crew should know the symptoms of CO poisoning and how to react if it is suspectedInstall fuel burning appliances properly, in-line with makers directionsFollow servicing guidelines; maintenance should be routine and competent - Don't allow bodged repairs, adjustments and adaptationsAlways use appliances as per the instructions and never use cookers for space heating Don’t block ventilation – appliance fuels like gas, coal, wood, oil, paraffin, etc. need sufficient air to burn safelyDon’t bring charcoal BBQs on board, or have them near a cabin during or after use - only stone-cold charcoal is safeKeep engine fumes out of the cabin space, never use a portable generator in or near a cabinLearn about the danger signs, spot potential hazards before CO occursDeal with problems immediately, never use equipment you suspect has problemsInstall a certified CO alarm (BS EN 50291-2), test it routinely and never remove the batteriesI hope this helps everyone who had questions on this topic - and helps people find suitable CO alarms. (Before you ask - we hope to have a similar list of smoke alarms suitable for boats - it's work in progress with the smoke alarm industry)
  2. This post cannot be displayed because it is in a forum which requires at least 10 posts to view.
  3. I am going to purchase some smoke, gas and CO detectors. Smoke is ok (it goes up), gas is ok (it goes down) but how high, or low, should I fix the CO detector. Many thanks. Daiboy.
  4. We (CWDF) have many threads related to safety that are posted under 'General Boating'. I believe that safety demands its own category. We all want to enjoy boating on canals, rivers and estuaries, often with our families and loved ones, but we must understand and minimise the risks. Like many other pastimes (e.g. climbing, skiiing, flying, walking etc.) boating does involve risks that can easily be minimised. The BSS Certificate provides some re-assurance but there are many other 'best practice' procedures that may provide a happy ending to a cruise. Alan
  5. Macclesfield Express http://www.macclesfield-express.co.uk/news/local-news/safety-warning-after-macclesfield-canal-11043952 Safety warning after Macclesfield Canal boat tragedy Updated 13:43, 16 Mar 2016 - By Stuart Greer Christopher Reuben died from carbon monoxide poisoning on his boat Nomadic Chris Wimbush Christopher Reuben, 52, was found dead on his dawncraft called Nomadic on Macclesfield Canal near Springbank Lane bridge. Safety advice has been issued after a man was poisoned by fatal carbon monoxide fumes from the engine of his boat. Christopher Reuben, 52, was found dead on his dawncraft called Nomadic on October 15 last year. His vessel had been moored on the Macclesfield Canal near Springbank Farm, Springbank Lane, Adlington. An inquest at Macclesfield town hall on March 7 concluded that Mr Reuben, from New Moston, Manchester, died accidentally. Now Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service and the Boat Safety Scheme, a public safety initiative run by the Canal and River Trust and the Environment Agency, are urging boat owners and dwellers to make vital checks to avoid similar tragedies from happening. In the last 20 years, 30 boaters have been killed as a result of carbon monoxide, according to the Boat Safety Scheme. Graham Watts, manager of the Boat Safety Scheme said: “Over a million people are using boats safely each year, including thousands of people who live aboard on the inland waterways, but our reminder to crews and skippers is to treat the risks with due respect. “Prevention is the key to staying safe. All engines and appliances need to be properly installed, well maintained and used according to the instructions. “But carbon monoxide can occur or be made worse when ventilators are blocked, or fresh air is in short supply. Burning fuels need the right amount of oxygen to combust safely and it’s also incredibly important to keep exhaust fumes out of the boat’s interior. “If there’s a smell of exhaust fumes aboard, there could be deadly carbon monoxide in the cabin and that’s why our belt and braces advice is to fit a carbon monoxide alarm approved as meeting BS EN 50291-2. These are type best suited for boats. “And if an alarm go off, open the doors, hatches and windows and get ashore straightaway. “The skipper should turn off appliances and engines as they get out. If anyone feels unwell, giddy, confused or sick they should get very urgent medical treatment.” Nick Evans, head of prevention at Cheshire Fire Service, added: “I would encourage anyone living or holidaying on boats to ensure that they protect themselves by checking that their boat is fitted with both working smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors.” For more safety information visit www.boatsafetyscheme.org/co
  6. Not least because of recent sad incidents, I want to give this Wiltshire Fire & Rescue Service event some publicity - check out their twitter feed. Boat Safety presentation 7:30pm18th Jan Cross Keys Great Bedwyn .If you own a canal boat come along collect free smoke-carbon monoxide alarm There's a 30 minute chat, then they will be handing out free smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors to boat owners. Tell your mates, alert them on Snap Chat, Facebook, text them, call them, knock on their boat, by any means get them there. By my reckoning, I think from memory (caveat) its been 6 boaters died in 5 boat fires between Newbury and Bristol since 2003 ................... And if you're not from that area, call your local fire service and ask for a boat fire risk/safety check. Please spread the word Thanks
