Just found out today that my BMC 1.5 could cost thousands to repair... The chap could only have a quick look at it, but there's a major knocking noise coming from somewhere and it will only operate at very low load. Very smokey, etc. He can't get to having a proper look at it until next month, but he reckons it could cost thousands to repair... With me not having thousands, I was wondering what my other options are? It might be considering getting hold of a replacement engine - so would I have to replace it with another BMC 1.5 or can something else go in? And where's a good place to get hold of a decent used engine at a reasonable price? Thank you, James

Hi All, We have a TC BMC 1500 in our NB. Over the past few months it has taken longer and longer to start, up to around 1 min of turning over and nearly catching before finally catching, with a 40 sec pre-heat. Between November and today we have had a mechanic visit 4 or 5 times (who we trust), and he has gone through all of the obvious issues (glowplugs, compression, valve clearances, diesel injectors (we had them serviced)) and each time the problem has persisted. Now it's got to the point that our mechanic has tinkered enough to try and get it to start that it now smokes like a ba***rd. Basically now I'm not sure if the problem has been made worse or that the engine just isn't happy. A week or so ago (before refurbished injectors were fitted and some tinkering took place) it would take a long time to start but when started it would run very well, pretty quiet, and with very little smoke. Now this isn't the case (although we'll see tomorrow if it starts quicker). Two things: anyone got any ideas?? Also, does anyone know of a BMC specialist in the Oxfordshire area that could come and give us a second opinion? I trust our usual mechanic, but maybe he's missed something obvious on this occasion?? I can't remember all of the things that our mechanic has done offhand, but I probably would do if reminded. He basically worked through the starting problem bit by bit, starting with obvious things like glow plugs and moving right through to injectors...

Hi All, I am planning to service the above engine on our NB this weekend. I used to service my car years back, but I am pretty much a novice and haven't worked on diesel engines before. I am pretty practical, so I should be ok and don;t want to pay 120 - 150 for the (dis)pleasure of someone doing it for me. I gather I need to replace fuel filter, oil filter, air filter and of course oil. Anyone out there got anything to add to that list? The engine runs well actually, but recently it takes a while to start (maybe 30 - 40 seconds before it finally fires) and is much smokier than it used to be when we first bought the boat in the summer. I'm guessing it needs a service anyway. Looking through the stuff that the previous owner left, I have two new fuel filters (a Crossland C1191PL and a Coopers/Fiaam FT4788/AZF015 - can I use either??) and what looks like a fan belt (Gates 6375MC 11.9 x 1010). Should I change the latter as there is a new one?? This sounds like it might be beyond my skills. Does anyone have part numbers for the oil and air filters to save me climbing down into the engine compartment and trying to look for them on the old ones?? Any advice would be very much appreciated!!!! Cheers!!! Mike

Does anyone know where I can get this part from for my BMC 1.5... ...it's a rubber, corner part on the cooling system that connects the header tank to the pipe than goes down to the radiator. My existing one has just split. And I've tried AMC but they don't do it cos it's not part of the engine... Thanks in advance!
