  1. If any one needs any help with internet on the move or WiFi topics please ask away.. Having done over 100 installations countrywide now, I think I can say I've got a good idea what makes this tick the boxes. Networks, Location and Equipment Martyn
  2. I have seen lots of posts, past and present, about WiFi. I have also been given advice of how to get the best WiFi on board. I have been advised to get the following: Poynting XPOL-1 V2 5G aerial/ antenna Huawei B535 With an EE sim. We are with EE. After reading others posts and listening to advice I am confused as people are mentioning multiple cables/sizes connections, 12v plugs. Is there anyone who can just say whether the above is fine or is there an alternative? Also pictures of the wiring setup or cable connectors may help me. Many thanks if you are able to help.
  3. Have a bog standard rooftop aerial from Wifi Onboard and it’s worked well. However I think a few bashes on the aerial have damaged it internally. Done all checks and with internal aerial in router only and am getting 21mbps but with external only 4 or 5, it clearly needs replacing. But, it cost about £150 for a replacement, can anyone recommend another type that can easily be screwed onto the existing base at a lesser cost?
  4. Both bluetooths "on", reasonable 4G signal, hotspot on mobile "on" VPN connected. So why is my iPad not connecting🤔
  5. Hello Narrowboaters! I am SURE this topic has been asked over and over, but its hard to find a definitive answer. For the next few years, I plan on living aboard and continuously cruising through Summer and Autumn. Unfortunately, I still need to work — but its all on my own time. I do however need good wifi once a week to teach online via Zoom. My plan is to, obviously plan ahead — and try and get to an area of good reception a day ahead of my teaching day, to allow for any change of plan and the need to continue on to find better signal. I travel most of the time, and usually just buy a SIM card for a spare Phone, and teather to this to get internet on my laptop. On this forum, Im finding two methods, 1. buying and antenna and a router and a proper boat set up, 2. A SIM card on a phone. Given my situation, which would you suggest to get as much sweet wifi as possible and not go to mad to find it! And which company etc. would you recommend going through for the installation if the built in solution seems to be best? Im not to concerned about cost, mainly concerned about ease of use, and also ease of install!
  6. whats the best 3g/4g omni directional aerial /Router set up for week signal areas . i think where im moored the best network provider will be EE .
  7. Hi all . We have recently moved marina,s and now our 3 signal is a bit slow . Looking into weather we need a outdoor aerial and if so what other people are using . My understanding of WiFi is not the best 🤣 . Any pointers would be great .
  8. Hi all. Not sure if this is any use to you guys but I've just signed up for this unlimited phone, messages and data plan. It's costing me £18 a month and the coverage is great with 4G 5G and the rest.. They sent me a code so if anyone signs up using it they get a £10 Amazon voucher. I know WIFI ONBOARD sell routers that need sims so just thought it may help someone. https://i.smarty.co.uk/dHOKML ANYWAY THAT's the link above.. If you use it I also get a voucher so happy days all round.
  9. Hi been doing and reading up a lot on wifi including updates in this group. I’m kinda making a bee line to Maxview Roaming X due to good gain, router being 5g/4k streaming ready and to support heavy internet usage as I work from home using Ms teams/zoom a lot. Wondered if anyone has fitted the Maxview dish on the slight curved narrow boat roof? Has anyone got a Maxview and is all good? Keen to get a review as little is said about Maxview roaming on the Narrowboat world (very popular on campervans, caravans and motor boats). thanks
  10. I'm after a temperature logger such as the Govee https://uk.govee.com/products/wi-fi-temperature-humidity-sensor Which will allow me to record temperatures on board over winter. However I need a second facility and that is that in needs to be able to switch on 1500W of heaters when the temp drops below 4degC. I can find a separate item to do this such as https://sonoff.tech/product/diy-smart-switches/th10-th16/ But would like one item to do the job. At present I have analogue Temp sensor and switch but I cant monitor it remotely I just get a txt message if the temperature drops below 2degC
  11. Evening, Sorry if this has already been covered but I haven't been able to find it! I've been struggling with internet, trying to stream NetFlic, or do video calls and I've decided to upgrade to a 5G wifi router. (Whole separate learning curve there!). However, my real problem is that I'm currently running a low-usage 12v boat (one 'car socket' with a USB conversion, & a couple of plugs running from an inverter (+pumps etc.)). The router's come with a standard AC to 12v DC converter, so atm my 'quick fix' is to leave the inverter on and plug it in. However, I was hoping someone may have had a similar dilemma, is there a way I can run it off a USB socket? Or will I have to bite the bullet and install a new 12v cigarette lighter? Should I be scared of running the inverter? (Juice comes from 2 bog-standard 6v Trojans in series)
  12. If the iPhone has connected to the 2.4ghz WiFi and the PC to the 5ghz WiFi then the iPhone will have lower speeds. Same phone to my WiFi from same position. 5ghz 25mbs 2.4ghz 7.5mbs It will always connect to the strongest signal which is usually 2.4ghz which is why my 2.4ghz is disabled 😉
  13. WiFi 6 will be of very little benefit unless the things that you are connecting to it are also WiFi 6, many are not.
  14. Some cheap charging cables only have the power cables but not the data cables inside them. can you connect anything else to the computer using those two cables? The house wifi router might be blocking the connection if the wifi works via hotspot. Or the house router might be set to only use a type of wifi the reader doesn't support.
  15. Excellent. Cables are weirdly important. I've got a Kobo reader that will charge ok with two cables but won't connect to the computer with either of them, but will with a third. And its wifi will connect via my phone hot-spot but not with the house WiFi. These things are designed with built in irritations.
  16. Some do. My old Lenovo tavlet did but an upgrade stopped that working. I now make sure the wifi is off when not in use and always turn the location off, as that uses loads of power. I use a widget on the home screen to turn the wifi off.
  17. Yes, like when there's no data signal. I have a satellite dish and unlimited WiFi but I watch most terrestrial TV via the satellite dish and catch up stuff on WiFi. There's no reason for that as I could watch both via WiFi, but it's just my habit. However, I don't see why I'd get rid of the satellite dish? That would run counter to my philosophy of equipment on boats, which is building in redundancy and having different systems available as backup in case one's not working. So in that respect having a satellite dish and WiFi for watching TV is no different to having a calorifier and an instant gas water heater for example.
  18. Assuming you are talking about multi sim or family account then yes it has to be another EE sim. Yes you can put any sim you like in the B535 router, and your phone (or any other device) will connect to the router via WiFi just like WiFi in a house. It is totally separate from any network locks on your phone.
  19. yes I liked the Wagon and Horses, on/by the traffic lights? cant remember if they had wifi £2.75 on a Tuesday here down south in the midlands
  20. Specification quote 1-30 lit/min. Wifi already tested and working from middle of boat. Temperature max is 80degC.
  21. Well yes, obviously. The router (and built in wifi antenna) is in a wardrobe at the front of the boat. It is on the top shelf so quite high up.
  22. I have a 20amp Sonoff on the van. Bit fiddly to set up but once done you can read it from anywhere provided it has WiFi.
  23. C'mon, be fair its not just boats - you forgot, satellites, telephones, WiFi, antennas, electric vehicles, cycling, & anything electronic.
  24. In an ideal world a WIFI connected camera would be perfect. I imagine the blink has quite modest power requirements, but when you add in the power requirements of the WIFI it could get problematic. Of course everyone's setup is different. But my Huawei B535 4g wifi router draws 1 amp when it's running which in the middle of winter during cloudy weather, my solar just can't keep up with. When you factor in the blink subscription fee along with the 4g sim fee you can see why a covert wildlife camera might be an attractive choice.
