  1. When CRT trim back trees on the towpath and leave lots of lovely logs just lying there, does anyone know if you are allowed to help yourself to said logs or is this classed as theft ? I know the towpaths are classed as public places but they are still the property of the canal authorities.

I believe that it is the common understanding that you can help yourself

The logs that are generally left behind are willow so have no value. The contractors that cut the trees do not want the hassle of removing the logs so leave them for the boaters.

  2. Not really, if you want to expell air from a coil you remove the outlet hose not the feed, and don't forget to clamp the hose you are removing to mitigate coolant loss.

OK might be a bit wrong, but loosen the higher hose on the calorifer as the air rises , no need to clamp any hoses as your not undoing anything fully.just loosen them slowly.

  3. You need to find the pipe that is the flow from the Webasto, where this enters the calorifer, loosen off the fittings and let the air out, the engine is heating OK, so leave this pipe run alone. A small amount of air in the coil can have a big effect. Ben

  4. Yes, you are. If you want to use it to power standard UK electrical kit, you need a 240v one. Messing about with that is like wanting a dog and instead buying a cat to convert. :)

Someone will be along shortly to tell you where to buy a cheap 120 to 240v step up transformer - or maybe how to knit one.:)

What you need to do is knit a 120v to 240v . leave it and buy the right one at a more expensive price!!
  5. Bodmin took 2 to 3 weeks

Banstead all money transferred within 24 hours of offer, paperwork signed 4 days later!!! It can be quicker than you are ready for, but better that than months and ,months of waiting

  6. We've always used Apolloduck. One off payment if you want a featured advert with more than one photo, Free (I think) if you only want one photo. Most people check out the duck regularly, even if not in the market for a boat, but are just interested about whats for sale

  7. The two easiest ways would be

Either get a screen printer to make a screen and then the image can be applied as many times as you want.

Or have the negative of you image cut in vinyl stick this onto the canvas then sponge paint (to give that old effect) or spray paint,

The vinyl solution shouldn't be to hard to get and any sign makers should be able to supply it from your image.

  8. As i single hander mostly, i don't care if people leave gates open all the time.

I close all gates behind me, even as a single hander.

So Did I. Even with the pair, I'd always close the gates

Think that its just easy for people to use the leave gates open argument, I see it as lazy as would CRT

  9. Did kriss take advantage to the 5 months of winter mooring that he could have bought? If you were stuck, surely 5 months mooring at the reasonable price would have been a good idea, and taken the heat off a bit!

Why not just untie the boat every day and drift, my boats moved great distances by themselves when the pins pulled out.

  10. As I came down the GU from Hemel to Uxbridge I shared locks with Banstead. The steerer was solo (plus dog). The cloths are emblazoned "The Bargee" and nowt else and there is some info on the inside of the engine 'ole doors.

Saw the boat again on Monday in Paddington Basin and later saw the steerer was on the back of a trip boat at Little Venice. Although we chatted when working the locks I failed to ask his name!!

His name is Mike. He is the proud new owner of Banstead. Runs his own trip boat in Little Venice and also works on Jason.

  11. Hello,

I am new in the forum and I hope someone can help me.

I am in the process of buying a boat without engine and without mooring.

My and my bf we are already fantasizing about how to make it a super cool house, however I need to find a place where to put it by August.

I am looking for a place in the South of London within a marina or just at the end of a piece of land owned by a farmer. Would that be possible or am I a dreamer ?

    Thank you so much

    boat size: 42'x10'

I'm not sure that you have any idea of the cost of London moorings! If you are looking at a cheap way of building your dream, to own your own place and live in London, good luck to you. You might be able to build the accommodation and the hull for X amount of money, but the mooring will cost so much more, you'll wish you never bothered.

You only have to look at some of the posts on here with regards to the way the CaRT auction moorings have rocketed over the past few years. Boating is not what it was. We just left our mooring of 6 years, We paid CaRT £120 a month and the land owners (Well actually they lease the land from CaRT on a long term lease that's attached to the property deeds for around £270 a year!) They were paid £250 a month, Not a bad deal really, considering we had 2 full length boats. On handing in our notice, our landlords told us that they were just about to increase our rent to £795 a month!!!!!!!!! No shore line, no water, no rubbish or Elsan disposal, no address, Oh and we built the mooring, there was nothing there before we took it over.

Sorry for sounding negative, but boating has changed in recent years, certainly in the South, its becoming an expensive way of life that like a lot of things makes the rich richer and the poor poorer.

    But good luck!

Oh and if you try Peter X's suggestion frusty.giffrusty.giffrusty.gif
