  1. I've had a contract with Smarty over the last few years, and have a backup O2 PAYG SIM in a second slot on my phone (with the idea that I could buy an O2 data add-on if required). I've found that in the few places with a poor or non-existent 3 signal (e.g. Crick, parts of the South Oxford summit) the O2 signal has also been very weak.
  2. To make it easier: https://www.google.com/search?q=site%3Acanalworld.net+bleeding+a+BMC+1.8 gives 228 hits from the forums.
  3. "idyllic rural location" says the estate agent. I've never heard anyone describe King's Norton Junction like that before.
  4. Indeed: From here: https://check-long-term-flood-risk.service.gov.uk/map?easting=408794&northing=342466&map=RiversOrSea
  5. Looks as though access with a vehicle might be problematic, and getting supplies of oil for the boiler or solid fuel could be a challenge. The agent's details are suspiciously silent on these matters. It would be interesting to know how high the flood waters would rise in a bad winter, and how much noise comes from the almost adjacent JCB test centre and the nearby Alton Towers.

  10. One thing to bear in mind is that few if any hire companies accept solo hirers, if that's what you have in mind. Some organisations do "experience days" or training courses which comprise an accompanied day or two with some instruction. Another alternative is a trip on a hotel boat, some of which welcome their guests to participate in some of the cruising tasks. I'm not local to Nottingham so cannot help with specific contacts there.

  12. The pipeline (from Harwell) has been decommissioned for a while, so plenty of time to wash away any remains, (if they aren't buried - there were leaks from the pipeline in 1961 and 1988 that led to large quantities of topsoil being removed). https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/decommissioning-of-the-harwell-site-discharge-pipeline

Bearing in mind that it is an agreement for 150 years one might expect legislation and taxation to vary in unpredictable ways over the period. Perhaps this clause is to clarify that the impact of any such changes will be borne by the marina operator, even if such charges are initially levied on CRT.

Perhaps it is intended to mean that they will only reflect the impact of mooring rate rises once a year, rather than in the quarterly invoice following the change.
  15. Are you still logged in on the tablet? Mine periodically logs me off for reasons I don't understand, and when it does the quote button disappears, as does the text box.
  16. Cruising slowly home past some moorings on the Ashby I spied a chap leaning out of his side hatch with smartphone in hand. As I idled by he said he'd bought an app to recognise birdsong. I asked him what it was saying and he replied "diesel engine". He seemed pleased with the accuracy of his AI purchase.
  17. Lots of people haven't spent much time needing to find stuff online, (in my case it was for reasons to do with gainful employment). Sometimes in technical matters it's just easier to give an answer to the question, rather than explain how to do it. They might not need to find similar stuff again anytime soon. My elderly mother-in-law has taught me this. One time she had a PC problem and she was watching me work out how to fix it. I typed a google search describing the problem and got instructions on what to do. Watching behind my back she said, "Oh, could I have done that? How long will it take you to fix it." Now I just (remotely - she is 6 hours travel away) fix stuff on request, as it is quicker than trying to explain.

Not sure if it is still there but the owner of Itchington Bottom Lock cottage told me that he had managed to negotiate a towpath side end of garden mooring by the lock a few years ago.
