Why was water coming in the weedhatch? Was it not properly sealed?
Yes - many people bend the weed hatch retaining bar by over tightening. On the non tidal cut not fully tightening us not an issue, but to tackle the flood tide of the Severn we had the motor on full for over an hour and suspect the extra pressure from the prop rotation caused the leak. Not helped that the seal strip was worn in places

On a narrowboat aren't the scuppers and weedhatch usually at opposite ends of the boat?
Yes of course, but the water coming in made the boat heel until the port scuppers let more in

Good read, very enjoyable.
I noted he blocked his scuppers ... why would you do that? Surely scuppers are ther to let the water out! (at least they have been on the boats I've been to sea on).
When we started shipping water in the Bristol Channel from the weed hatch (due to hammering the flood tide) and nearly capsized the scuppers certainly didn't help

In Leiden in the Netherlands the canal bridges are very low. Old orange ship's lifeboats are very popular with the local residents. I wondered why until our friends took us on a short trip to town to see a music festival hosted on a pontoon in the canal - we had to lie down on the twarts to get under each bridge
Is there a video of this ship going under said bridge?

Dodgy !
Or the Festival has become too commercial. Why do they need to use a large area of land to host a canal Boat festival? I thought it was just about the Boats.
No - it is also a music festival - my son played there over 10 years ago

Hi all!
My wife and I are looking for another one week share in a narrowboat. I am an experienced boater. We are retired so don't mind what dates we get (not mid-winter if possible) and we don't mind too much where the boat is. I would prefer a trad/ semi-trad stern layout and at least 4 berths - so something in the region of 50-60 feet?
Anyone looking for another owner?
Thanks
Tony

I’ll just mention one stupid issue which seems to be becoming problematic. Several people have reported that many insurance companies decline cover if any of the co-owners are not resident in the UK. Not quite sure why. Just something to check on before getting too deep into the purchase of a share.
That problem arose a few years ago on our, privately managed, shared boat.
on the linen issue, once in a shared ownership boat you might be able to ask another owner who lives near the boat to store a set of linen for you (and duvets in our case)

Probably lack of use. Has it ever rescued a boat in the tunnel?
Yes - when a boat caught fire - last year?

Is this an LM100 gearbox? Or less likely an LH150? There are pictures on the net to identify.
If an LM100, see here for help. https://listerparts.co.uk/LM100.html
It is possibly the cone clutch need relining but check that full engagement of the lever is possible and its not just a slack linkage not allowing full travel.
Ours is a Blackstone gearbox similar to LM1xxThere is no filler as the engine oil lubricates the box There are 6 bolts holding the cast aluminum coverThere is a separate 3/1 reduction box -
We use traditional mineral oil from Morrison

I'm a little surprised by this sentence, are the engine and gearbox physically seperate and linked only by a a drive shaft? Or do the engine & gearbox share oil and or coolant??
Any photos available??
They are linked and share oil - as it is air cooled there is no coolant to share

Our Blackston gearbox attached to Lister HR2 is coming out of forward gear after about 1 hour boating. Reverse OK. Locks in again when engine cools down. Then the same. Any suggestions why this is happening?

Would recommend you wait to water up at Llangollen

Sounds good!
I look forward to the iPhone version

Have you measured the diameter of the pipes? Whereas the UK standard sizes for copper pipes between 10mm and 22mm are 10, 12, 15, and 22mm, in France the range is 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, and 22mm. I have no idea what the range is in other countries. At least Europe uses BSP Iron pipe threads and pipe sizes.
In Italy the pipe and fittings are in INCHES!!!
