  1. Sorry folks

Dave has tested positive for covid so we have to cancel.

Chris and Lise have also cancelled

On updating other guests by messenger my words were misinterpreted and BSP cancelled their room thinking I had cancelled the banter.

Let's try and reschedule shall we?

    Hi Jan,

Sounds good. What time are you thinking?

    Rob

The table is booked for 5pm with a view to a leisurely meal before moseying over to The Swan afterwards.

I suspect we might all be lightweights when it comes to extended drinking hours these days but there is always a banter breakfast to look forward to

    Hiya Rob

Sorry it took a while to respond. We were away for New Year and I wasn't doing a great deal with regard to admin stuff!

Chris, Lise, Dave and I are going to have a pre-banter meal in The Basin - let me know if you want to join us. If anyone else is attending and wishes to join us they are welcome too

Living in Loughborough and having organised the last banters in the town we are interested in this one. The Swan in the Rushes is the obvious pub as its just across the road from the hotel and the canal. There is also a spoons which we could take over part of. For those who don't know the town it has an intersting centre with a market and good charities shops plus the Great Central Railway for gricers (railway fans). Plenty of good beer. There is a good small brewery in town - Charnwood their Vixen is well worth drinking and it reminds me of a certain forumite who shall remain nameless!!

Hi Richard, I did not want to be presumptuous about whether you might be willing to be a liaison in the area to assist with organising this one but it will be absolutely lovely to see you both again.

Well a Certain Mr Chris Bennett and his lovely OH Lise decided to book the Trouble Sledge (that was what he wrote and so I am not changing it) for the night of 13th of January and there are now a total of eight people who I have suggested via the FB page that they will be going so I booked Dave and I into the Travelodge for that time too (but I decided to book an additional night on 12th so we have 2 days there and maybe there will be someone else around for an extended banter? If not then we like Loughborough and will find plenty to occupy us while we are there.

The other people who have suggested via Facebook that they are hoping to go are Wrigglefingers, and Ray Thorpe (We already have Myself, Postcode, BSP, TreeMonkey)

Others who are interested in being there are Ally (and Marc) The Moomins. Bazza, Alan and Cath Fincher, The HBF, Nicky Schiessel Harvey, Smudge, John & Renee Devine, Viv Danning and Tom Brophy (apologies for a mixture of possibly abbreviated forum ID's and names)

My suggestion is that anyone who might be wanting to attend take a look at booking your room soon because the prices tend to go up the more interest there is in a date at the Travelodge

The forum isn't what it was back then, this perhaps being reflected in the lack of response. Back then people seemed keen to meet face to face, nowadays people seem ok not to meet in person.

But good luck in trying to arrange one.

Clearly the forum isn't what it used to be (and yes I know, I rarely post here now either so am as much to blame for that as the next person

However - I felt fairly sure that there would be plenty of people interested in having a banter if I could reach out to many of those others who rarely come here now.

Early this morning I set up a Facebook event to gauge the interest among other former forumites that I am connected with.

The link is here is anyone is interested:

    https://fb.me/e/6XGKq2Pi2

Since creating the event there 4 people have responded by saying they are "going" and another 6 have reacted by suggesting they are "interested" - in just a couple of hours.

Further discussion will proceed to decide if the date is a firm one and I will report back here for anyone who does not do FB.

This is open to anyone who wishes to join in whether you have been to a banter before or not

People still very much meet face to face whenever the opportunity arises.

That is how come BSP and I were chatting - when I realised we would be attending the Atherstone Floating Market (by car) we made arrangements to catch up.

Many boaters who have forged friendships through this forum are still in regular contact with each other and meet up when the planets align to allow them to do so. It is always lovely to have a catch up, especially when we all had a couple of years of struggling to do so with Covid.

The thought is that organising a banter would allow a larger group of people to meet up and catch up with many old friends while potentially meeting new people and forging new friendships/

    Hya 🙂

Unfortunately Loughborough is a bit too far for me nowadays. It's a shame because I have fond memories of various Loughborough banters.

I don't think many of the old banterers post on here any more, I keep in touch with most of them via Facebook nowadays. Maybe set up an event on Facebook and send invitations out?

It's a shame banters have fizzled out - we made some lifelong friends via CWDF banters.

    Good luck 🙂

It is a huge pity - perhaps we need a banter in Kent?

Although we never made it to a banter, we loved hearing about them and seeing the photos. I wonder if some folk are now a bit wary of attending in case one of the more verbose and opinionated members is present and hogs the show?

There have always been verbose and opinionated members on this forum. I have been to dozens of banters over the years and find that either the verbose and opinionated members have no interest in turning up to these events (making me feel they really are just keyboard warriors) or, if they do, once you hear the tone of their voice when they speak you start to get a different take on the individual and they are not always quite the person I thought they were from their online presence

Indeed. It’s also quite difficult to lay the boot in so hard on an online forum when you’ve actually met the people on the receiving end…..this might stop others from attending.

It would be a shame if it put anyone off. My first banter I turned up to alone and received a warm welcome and made some amazing friends

I only made it to one banter, the one at the Blue Bell on the Grand Union near Solihull back in 2015.

Met lots of people, many who no longer post on here, and a few that still do, and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Perhaps we need more, smaller banters over a wider area, so those local to them attend?

There is never anything stopping anyone from arranging a banter. There always used to be a handful of people who would organise something in their area, if folks could get to it and wanted to they did, if they couldn't they didn't.

Just set a date, choose a location and see who is interested. Many of those who no longer post on here (myself included) are still in regular contact with many of the friends made back in the day via Facebook

As seasoned Loughborough banterers, (it is possible we have missed one of the series to date, I think, but certainly no more than that), we could well be up for this.

Personally though I have enjoyed them either being in the gap between Xmas and New Year, or, depending how the days fall, actually at the New Year.  Two of the last times we went we have enjoyed spending New Years Eve with fellow banterers.

I wouldn't rule out an event a week or two into January, but do feel something might be lost by completely detaching from the "festive" season.

I get exactly what you are saying and yes, the lull between Christmas and New Year is the perfect time for it. BSP and I had initially assumed that was when it would be but Dave reminded me that we are currently booked to be away for New Year.

After having to cancel 16 bookings for accommodation across Europe back in March when my health took a turn for the worse we have been clinging onto that booking hoping against hope that it won't have to be cancelled. If the majority of people would prefer the banter to be in the gap between Christmas and New Year then that is when it should be. I think I was just being a bit selfish suggesting the tried and trusted formula be changed to suit us

Hi everyone. @cheshire~rose and I were talking about how much we missed the old banters. So we thought we would test the proverbial water to see how many forumites would be interested in a get together?

We are thinking about organising a Loughborough banter to blow away the cobwebs around the Most Depressing Day of the Year rather than Christmas (to avoid family commitments and as an excuse to do something fun when it's cold and bleurgh). So that would mean a suggested banter date of Saturday, 13th January 2024.

Nice pub, good beer, hopefully food for people who want to eat there, Travelodge nearby for those of us who want to stay over, usual stuff.

Just to get a rough idea and guage interest, who would be interested in coming along?😊

Sorry it took me so long to log in and get involved

Obviously Dave and I are up for this but I see perhaps some would prefer it to stay with the "usual" time between Christmas and New Year.

If the majority prefer that then it should go ahead but as we are away for New Year we will be unable to attend.

A thought I also had was when does the uni return after Christmas? The pub we have traditionally "The Paget Arms" used for the last few banters is a uni pub  just outside the town in a student area that is always nearly empty at that time and they welcome us with open arms. If the students are already back that might be a bit different but we could probably revert to The Swan in The Rushes (which is a very short walk from the Travelodge.

Many of us have had a lovely meal in The Basin too and whatever time of year that could continue

One of the Birmingham booklets is now for sale here:  https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/175758581192

John, thank you so much for pointing me in the right direction. I have a search saved on ebay for this but for whatever reason it did not pick this up.

I placed an initial bid (£3.50) on it regardless but contacted the seller to ask if it had details of Water Viper in it to be certain. He came back saying it did and suggesting I were free to make a buy-it-now offer if I had perhaps previously hired the boat. I was a little hesitant to admit to owning the boat because I thought the price might just skyrocket if I did but went back to explain we owned the boat and had been after the booklet for a while as we already had the photos from Ellesmere Port archives but no context to go with them. I also explained that in our view the booklet formed part of the heritage of the boat and, once purchased would stay with the boat if ever we decided to sell it in future. I asked him what sort of figure he would be prepared to accept for the booklet and the next thing I knew he had accepted my initial £3.50 starting bid!

It arrived and is absolutely beautiful

    347403179_743345147794170_25292566821154

Loads of information in there too. We could have hired Water Viper for £32 a week in peak season and a Cruising licence for a powered vessel over 50' was £16 a year, unless you lived aboard when it would set you back £38 a year.

  8. Not a boat for sale but a booklet that might interest some historic vessel owners, especially those whose boat was once one of the fleet of British Waterways Hire Boats with "Water" something as their name.

    https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/394583107129?mkevt=1&mkpid=0&emsid=e11051.m43.l1123&mkcid=7&ch=osgood&euid=4923772b80f147a89de8f17927dee51c&bu=43208583113&osub=-1~1&crd=20230424114023&segname=11051

I have been after the corresponding booklet from the same year which covered the similar display of pleasure craft in Birmingham which featured Water Viper in its advertising for their new fleet of hire boats. Water Viper was Delhi. When this came through as a saved search from eBay I contacted the seller to ask if by any chance Water Viper was in it and he said not but there is a LOT of mention of various other "Water" named boats.

If you have one and have any reason to believe it might have been in this exhibition it might be worth a message to the seller to ask if it is included in the book?

Meanwhile - the crowdfunder goes from strength to strength and I don't think it is any coincidence that there were a couple of sizeable and generous donations jmade just after I posted the details here. This good forumites of this parish have always been so supportive of Python and she would not be doing what she does now if it had not been for the significant support received from folks here when she needed a new bottom. Thank you whoever you are.

We would love to get to the half way mark before the AGM tonight so if anyone has a little they can spare to nudge the total in the right direction it would be much appreciate

    https://www.gofundme.com/f/transport-historic-boat-python-to-cct-festival?utm_campaign=p_lico+share-sheet&utm_medium=copy_link&utm_source=customer

  11. This springtime will see us take Python back to Paul Barber's Boatyard for a fresh coat of blacking to look after all that investment we made in re-bottoming her.

It seems incredible now that she is working so hard with teams of volunteers maintaining The Chesterfield Canal, that she ever spent 2 years sitting on the bank waiting to be restored. We rarely get a day when we are short of volunteers to join us and we more often have to turn people away because we simply don't have room for them. The local community have taken this boat to their hearts and will actually miss her when she leaves the canal for docking (we actually got told off for not planning it for the winter so it was done in downtime - they don't understand how inhospitable  and unreliable The tidal Trent can be in winter when you are relying on volunteers to sleep under canvas as they deliver the boat to the boatyard. The plus side is we specifically booked the docking so that we can attend the festival at Langley Mill while we are in the area!

That seemed like a great plan, now we just need to raise some money for the docking, the blacking and some new rear fenders. Aunty Wainwright was going to have to get busy again ...

Then a lovely neighbour on our moorings asked if I could sell this:

    336752344_779612706557651_54398613641870

Well of course I can! It obviously has some age to it as it is well made and heavy and it has been used since it was painted so it is not just an old horse feed scoop that has been painted up to look pretty. Does anyone want to give it a new home?

What is that I hear you say? A nice old painted horse feed scoop isn't going to pay for docking the boat - You are quite correct. This is just an incidental item I have for sale that might interest someone here. What actually happened was I talked to our friends Natasha and Paul on Nbwakamatandoto and they said they would set up a crowdfunder to raise funds for the costs!

So here am I feeling a little redundant as the lovely people from the community who have taken Python are digging deep and popping their fivers in the GoFundMe pot. That means I don't need to share a delectable array of highly desirable commodities to temp you to get your wallets out. so you can breathe a sigh of relief, unless you really want to support Python by popping a bit into the fund for docking costs - in which case - please click here:

    https://gofund.me/c075dc0d

Now then - anyone got an 'oss they need a feed scoop for? As much as these goFundMe things are wonderful, they are nowhere near as much fun as the traditional way I relieve you with the contents of your wallets ;)

  12. Well done for stepping up to take over the organisation, I am certain there is a lot of work involved and I wish you well with it, I also wish all the contestants a truly great challenge 2023.

Delhi won't be taking part this year. Please can someone offer the crew a place on their boat. I can confirm they are a really brilliant team and work like trojans - we estimate we lost about an hour and a half to prop fouls last year which is what thwarted us

I can wholeheartedly recommend Monkey, Kev and Rob to anyone looking for a team

I didn't word that as well as I could have done. There may have been a trophy, there was not a category that the trophy was being awarded for. I didn't realise that though, only having entered once before I didn't make any note of the fact it wasn't mentioned in the emails, I wrongly assumed it was a given that it happened. (Usually, eh @cheshire~rose !)

I dunno about "Usually" I have only done the challenge twice, one occasion you won that trophy so the next occasion we decided to collect rubbish and there was no trophy. I guess that is a 50/50 rather than a usually as far as I am concerned.

Later in the summer I went into a Charity shop and spotted a little yellow version of the shopping trolley among their bric-a-brac and bought it. One of the Pythoneers mounted it on a plaque and the real heroes, those who work tirelessly to keep Python afloat and provide the skilled team to oversee the volunteers who maintain the Chesterfield Canal, got to vote on which of the team should be awarded Pythoneer of the Year.

It was Jenny who won the award and very well deserved it was too.  In future we will stick to getting litter out of The Chessie where it is greatly  appreciated. by the local community. Although I can't promise that as Python has to leave The Chessie next year for docking and will attend the Erewash Festival. I bet the team will still collect litter, it is what they do!

May be an image of 2 people and indoor

Why would it be a problem? There was a boat moored on there for some years up until around 2 years ago. There are visitor moorings a short distance further along and a fairly short hop along to Clayworth there is Retford and Worksop Boat Club with online moorings that extend half a mile. These are all in a SSSI. It isn't a problem

Hayton,  Chesterfield canal, current mooring - towpath side. Permission granted for demolition and rebuild or could be renovated. There's a large new barn/workshop behind the house,  and a decent sized piece of land that had to be bought to put an access drive to the nearby lane.

Best viewed on Google maps,  Church lane, Hayton nr Retford, It's the 2nd house from the bridge.

Will be going to auction soon  (Mark Jenkinson), but pm me if interested.
