  1. Exactly my point, you've made two choices here, firstly to volunteer, then after your experience, not to volunteer! If BW wishes to continue to rely on volunteers, they must treat them as equally as their paid staff. If they are not, shame on them, they seem to be missing opportunities. You're missing the point again....if a fully qualified boatmaster doesn't want to offer his or her services, they dont have to respond to the ad. If they do...fine, why should you worry!! Please dont trivialise people talking to patients and pushing library trolleys around, they have just as much value as other skilled staff who often work many extra hours for nothing.... possibly patching up unfortunate boaters
  2. I think it's irrelevant whether they are highly skilled professionals or labourers, the point is, they choose to volunteer, no one expects them to or makes them!! If people want to offer whatever skills they have for the benefit of others, and I mean all canal users, not just the top brass, then that's fine by me. What we're seeing here is the natural progress of life whether we like it or not. More and more organisations use volunteer staff as a means of helping their business's survive and in the current financial climate, this will only become more prevelant. The NHS that I work in would collapse completely if it were not for volunteers and highly skilled Professionals giving extra time for nowt!
  3. Then of course, in Barnsley we got Barugh Green ( Bark Green) used be on the Barnsley canal!
  4. We moor at Cholemondeston. The lady in the office pronounces it Charmston, and a local I asked for directions pronounced it Kollymondeston with an emphasis on the 'est'. In Tom Rolt's book ' Narrowboat' he came across a local when he was passing through who pronounced it Kollermondeston....so take your pick
  5. Theres a passing Wind for sale on our Marina Yes I guess its the very same one
  6. How far do you want to travel ? We did ours at Top Lock Training in Marple, right on the junction of the Macclesfield and Peak Forest Canal, it's a lovely setting. He was in the process of selling his house and marina when we did it ( sept 09) but we passed through a couple of weeks ago and he was still there, might be worth giving him a call.If you PM me I'll pass on his phone number.
  7. After 6 months, you've probably got the darn thing sorted, but I had exactly the same problem, jabsco pump, just about pumping water from the shower drain, but not enough power to send it out of the skin fitting. Drove me mad for weeks, pump in, pump out, dismantled, hoses changed, new impeller ( not there was anything wrong with the old one as it turned out ) then just as I was about to throw overboard, I thought ...one last try, took the thing out again, took it to bits and found a tiny light brown stone, almost invisible against the brass body partially blocking the pump inlet, removed stone, now shower water hits the boat next door!!!
  8. Yes but you'll still love 'em just the same!!
  9. Thanks Phil, I'll follow your advice...but I have to admit to a lie, I only have 5 now, having reduced my collection...well something has to give when you buy a boat. Do you get to play much? I'm discovering more and more guitarists on the cut.
  10. Thanks Tony, wasn't aware of that, much appreciated....Dave
  11. Thanks for the reply...I'll give it a go, but I seem to remember using it in the past and getting similar disasters as with the white, may not have been the same stuff Thanks David...I'll look this one up....sounds promising
  12. Can anyone recommend a good brand of tape, where the paint wont feather under the tape!!
  13. I rest my case. Dont shoot the messenger, just relaying what our trainer told us ( if you want to take it up with him, he's in your neck of the woods!) As I said, once left to our own devices we do what we feel most comfortable with, what feels safe to one boater may terrify another. I'm happy now to rest the button on the gate and watch as it slides gently up, no forward surge even when going for a quick fill, then edge forward as it approaches full ready for a quick exit ( on narrow locks)
  14. Oh I can do unreasonable as well....and be unbalanced, especially after quiz night
  15. I've just been browsing and found your observations of the trainers at Audlem interesting. As relative newcomers to boating, we felt it sensible to undergo some ' proper tuition' even though we had had a fair few excursions on hire boats. Our trainer's emphasis was on safety first, as you would expect when trying to achieve a 'standard of proficiency'. His take on filling locks was 1 paddle half way up until the cill was under water then up with the rest and the other paddle. Half a turn does seem a bit extreme though. I would be loathe to blame the trainers, who lay themselves open to litigation if they give the incorrct tuition and someone has a nasty accident. How many of us drive our cars in the same way as they were taught. Very few I would imagine. The DSA set a standard for people to drive safely. When we pass our test, most of us settle in to a way of driving that we feel comfortable with, irrespective of what we've just been taught, and with less regard for safety than perhaps we should. I think the same applies to boating except that there are probably far fewer boaters who get what is deemed to be the 'right way to do it' before setting off down the cut. All of us at some time will carry out a manouevre or procedure that someone will find fault with....that's life I'm afraid
  16. Many thanks to you all for your replies. Have done a bit of googling and turned up schematics and prices for the model in question, a series 2000, number 2002 868093. OUCH. I dont think I'll be reconditioning this one....too many expensive parts needed. However, injectors, injector pumps, fuel pumps and probably the gearbox are all OK so should be able to recoup my very small outlay on it. Thanks again everyone
  17. Does anyone know anything about these engines. Have just picked one up to strip down and do up for the experience. It says Series 2000 on the rocker cover and on the gearbox is stamped MS2b plus an 8 figure number + a longer number underneath. Can manuals be bought? It is seized at present but the previous owner said its not that old and hasn't done many hours. Any info will be of use....thanks....Dave
  18. Does anyone know where spares can be bought for the above mentioned item. The nylon/plastic ring on mine is worn and slips and jams the lever, allowing me very little power in reverse, which can be a little awkward at times....or has anyone got a second hand one in working order? Thanks...Dave
  19. They may have been, but I was told Redcraft did a lot of Springers, mine certainly wasn't a owner job, too well done and a wooden cabin as well
  20. Does anyone have any information on Redcraft, the firm that used to fit out boats for Springer. Where were they, are they still in existence...taken over by someone....any thing really. Trying to trace our Springers fitters
  21. I have recently opened a Face book site for Springer owners and fans, called surprisingly enough, Springer Owners Unite, it can be accessed through the Facebook network and is available for anyone to post comments, send messages and post photos to the site. The usual rules of behaviour etc will apply and all fans and owners are welcome. If you are not a Facebook member, it is dead easy to register. The link is : http://www.facebook.com/home.php?#/pages/S...20330953?ref=nf. Hope to see you on there soon
  22. All you need to do to make a comment is to click the comment link under the post, or if you like the post but do not want to comment, just click the 'I like this' link. You can put photo links in here as well, but they wont upload to the site. If you want to post photos to the site, go to the left hand side of the page where all the fans are listed, scroll down a bit and there's a link for fans to add photos, and just follow the instructions. If none of this works, you'll have to register with Facebook, but I guess from what you're saying you already are. Be nice to see the pics. Dave Just looking at this again...cant fathom out how they get 6 berths in there. We have a fixed double and space for 2 put ups in the living area, but no way could we get 2 more in to the same 38' !!
  23. Good idea... http://www.facebook.com/home.php?#/pages/S...20330953?ref=nf That should do it
  24. I can understand completely what you mean!! How right you are....I have just started today a page on Facebook called Springer Owners Unite...pass the word and look us up....Dave Thanks for this Alan...bows certainly look like mine, but obviously the layout is different, as is the stern arrangement. If you're interested I've started a Facebook page Springer Owners Unite, which I hope will generate some interest....Dave
  25. Good idea...I'm willing to set up a simple database if anyone wants to contact me....Lada enthusiats excluded of course!!
