  1. Can anyone recommend a suitable air filter assembly that will fit my 1.5 BMC engine, bearing in mind the intake is directly below the Bowman heat exchanger.I guess a suitable extension can be clamped on to clear it...so would an ordinary pancake type be OK ? In case you're wondering...no...it's been running without since I bought it, and its time for a recon, so will be putting it back together in the proper manner!! Also....bear with me....should I have a water trap somewhere, there isn't one of those either and both the lift pump and the filter bowl contained a significant amount of water when I dismantled them.
  2. Having read your comment before the edit I was going to say...and a hard hat in case anyone else was following him!!
  3. I cant see how he is causing a hazard for anyone else...you refer to the people clearing up after an accident....it isn't a hazard to them, probably an inconvenience, yes, but not a hazard. Generally speaking, the people who clear up after an accident are professionals, it is their job, for which they get paid for and probably assess any risks associated with the job beforehand. The only way I could see him being a hazard to anyone else would be if the people waiting to clear up his accident (or any other unfortunate souls ) are waiting directly below him at the moment he falls.....highly unlikely, therefore a tolerable risk!
  4. I wish you all the best, there's nothing like the satisfaction you get from restoring something old and bringing it back to life. I feel the same way about old motorbikes, don't know enough about old boats to try one of those yet...except they're a bit!!? more expensive to restore.
  5. Well it appears to be both then, as we run power tools and various other 230v appliances off of it too. It has sockets for 230 and 12v.The manual states that the 12v is for charging batteries.
  6. Interesting...I haven't tried it yet my self, but I lent the genny to a chap who's batteries were flat and it charged them up fine!!
  7. IMO the best way to learn about engines is to get stuck in and do it yourself ( but get the manual). When the first hurdle presents...if you're resourceful enough, you'll get over it, then consequently the next one. It may cost a little extra at first, mistakes often do, but after having completed the job...time for great satisfaction, a pat on the back and a bit of increased confidence to tackle the next one!! The OP did say he wanted to learn about his, go for it I say!! Sorry!!!! should have read the other posts first...never mind. Just off to tackle my 1.5 BMC!!
  8. Thanks for that...perfectly understandable, just didn't want to do any damage to the battery management system by putting a higher voltage through it.
  9. I'm about to remove my engine for a recon, but will need to keep the batteries charged for occasional use of my electrics at weekends. I have a genny which has a 12v charging facility on it. Do I need to disconnect the boat electrics/battery management system whilst charging and to which terminals of my 4 bank set do I connect the charger, +ve on battery 1 and -ve on battery 4 or +ve and -ve on battery 1. 'Scuse my ignorance, I will get round to doing a 12v electrics course one day
  10. Some tanks, like ours would be impossible to paint as the only openings are the inlet and outlet. I personally would never put any chemical substance in a water tank, especially bleach. An in line water filter has served us well, just replace the filter every year. I guess if your water tank is obviously contaminated e.g. smells putrid....as opposed to 'boaty' then I guess it's going to need something more drastic.
  11. Our hat isnt fixed...just slots in the top of the chimney, handy when going under low bridges, it either gets pushed down or drags off!!
  12. Sorry I cant help with the part number, but the paper elements are available on E Bay ( am I allowed to say that )
  13. Could be a weak solenoid on the starter motor not being able to hold the cog in place. Think it might be called the bendix gear....someone will correct me if I'm wrong....which isn't unknown!!
  14. Surely all this information is in the public domain anyway...so it's hardly a secret

  16. This is our Verity at various stages of rehab. As we bought her, and work in progress and work done so far. Next job, engine out and recondition, engine bilge cleaned and painted. Next year, replace the wooden sides and repaint Hang on....wait till I get the hang of posting photo's !! ? [
  17. I recently had my Sureflo pump filter disintegrate, resulting in a flooded cabin bilge. Thankfully my water tank is at the bow, so completely drained under the floor, damaging nothing, except my Sunday afternoon
  18. Having a knackered BMC 1.5 on ours...the noise from on and inside the boat is considerable....however, a fellow boater remarked how quiet Verity was a she glided past!! which rather surprised me.
  19. Thanks Neil2 for the unsolicited plug for the site I'll second the bit about the cramped toilet compartment...but you can shower in it as well.
  20. Hi Mark, I put a comment about your boat under the Towpath Celebs post, forgot you were on here..doh...perhaps you can supply a bit more info. It must have a bit of history to it !

  21. For those wondering...I do not need the mobility scooter...just testing it for my Dad who now races round the Peak District terrorising snails
