  1. Good Evening to you all, well with money being tight somewhat like me i guess? How have any of the honourable members of the forum adopted a single coil calorifier to run both from the engine and a mikuni ? Im sure it can be done, Indeed in sure ive read on here where people have run the above concept and indeed been able to run the engine also through the radiators. Im approaching the stage in Angelwoods refit to tackle plumbing, I have a mikuni, i have an engine, i have a single coil cauliflower, and many lengths pipe patiently waiting to be as one. I would be gratefull of any advice and diagrams of what others have accomplished. Am I being a tad optomistic< In believing a 12v 3 way valve will switch between the single coil and Engine and Mikuni ? Also, Radiator height, I have hung 4 radiators along the length of the boat, positioned approx where the water line is, my neighbour advises they should be as low as possible, my reason to place them where i have, was I thought (probably wrongly ) it would cause less wall to hull condensation ? As allways many thanks in advance for advice and wisdom Regards Martin
  2. What an excellent thread . well done to all regards Martin
  3. The same engine as in our boat which sank, spent 2 weeks in the severn filling up with silt and s"""t then a further 14 months sat full of water, once we actually got to the engine to work on it took just 3hours of tinkering, and runs like clockwork. Im very impreessed by it. its noisey, but dependable.
  4. Thankyou all for your replys, since second earth has been in place all seems well, the inverter is a sterling. I called them today and they confirmed all should be well with the second earth from rcd to chassis. Once again a big thankyou regards martin
  5. hiya folks For many months now been contentedly working on boat with running the inverter and working of an exstension lead, this week ive wired up the ring main through rcd and been using sockets, today got a kick of the metal socket face, checked all wiring connections, found to be good. When measured socket face to hull with a meter it read 100v a/c? after checking the net , i put in a earth from rcd to inverter chassis, i wrongly assumed that the earths in the supply from inverter to rcd would suffice, Since making this additional earth path all is well. My concern is now that this spurious leakage found at socket face is now a leakage through hull to water ?... and this raises concerns that if thats the case? whats stopping the hull to slowly dissolve ? ................... what am I missing or doing wrong... all advice appreciated regards martin
  6. Dean for what its worth. I have 1 tracer 45A controller and 2 x 235w pannells coupled to 4x6v T105 batts approx 1000 amps. Recently whilst on the boat ive seen on sunny days between (on the higher side ) between 26 and 33 Amps going into the batts, Just a thought, rather than go to the exspense of huge pannells and huge controller, would it not be possible to go with a simillar set up but employ a second battery bank ie reserve bank ?? ax2 6v cells would be in the area of475A. two pannells charging one bank, then alternate to the other ?... i did find a 20 amp mppt controller which would match A sigle 235w pannel on ebay for around the 80.00 mark. So when were counting pennies two banks 2 pannells and two inexspesive controllers maybe a possability. my thinking that a good cyclic pattern between each bank may well prove healthy for the batts ?? one set just on charge one set on charge and on duty, then swop duty set via a switch every other day ?? did i make sense ?? regards Martin Thought ? if you had two controllers feeding the same bank? would they not possibly counteract each other? ie one output of 30a sees another supply of 30 and close down ?? just a thought and its late, my reasoning is the moment i start my engine the mppt controller closes down as it sences /detects alternator output
  7. I have just installed two 31v 240watt panells in series through a tracer 45 a controller, very pleased with results past few days have had healthy readings of 14.4v @26amps charging 1020amp battery pack. Admittably the 6v cells are quite old but hopefully last untill the fitout is complete, The entire set up cost less than £400. via carefull ebay trolling regards Martin
  8. Hi Rich let us know how you get on with it , as ive been watching these for a few weeks. Ive not purchased one yet as im installing solar which comes with a optional diplay box, and im waiting to see what information that will give me first. Good Luck regards Martin
  9. Hello Folks, ive had one of those (shouldnt of bothered weeks ) at the boat, for the first time since weve had the boat i decided to fill tank to help with checking ballast etc, however it had a leak. So many hours were spent draining into bilge and pumping back out, another morning spent digging out the tank and arranging for a professional to come and tig weld said leek. I decided to leave tank settle over night before reinstall. Yup if your still reading ive located another leek, it doesnt drip quickly. about 30mins before droplet appears, but its a leek. ? Is this common with old tanks ?? Im guessing due to its history and being left through 2 harsh winters it could be frost frozen damage ?? I patiently await for the welder to return Thanks Martin
  10. Thankyou everyone for your input, i think i will go the studded route. Looking forward to seeing a bulkhead up as its ressembled a cargo hold for too long now Thanks again Martin
  11. Sometimes you can find bargains on your door step, find your nearest euro carparts or unipart, or any local motorfactor, ask for something around 600 cca power. you could find one as little as 28.00 to around 64.00 good luck,
  12. Hi lining out has reached the point of (almost done) ... next a couple of bulkheads are required are bulkheads normally a one sheet wall? or are they two thinner sheets sanwiched with smallbattons between, I was wondering wether anyone has incorperated a sliding door, which slides inbetween or into the wall and if so what door gear was used indeed how was it accomplished? Secondly is 15mm pipe ok from the water tank ? ive seen some fit outs with 15 but more with 22 ? and i have intentions of installing water pump in kitchen next to bulkhead of shower room is thgis the site for it ? as allways all advice greatfully received kind regards Martin
  13. Yes well topped up as little drain running engine for about 4 hrs a week, charged through a low spin caterpillar alternator which pushes about 50 amp at 800 revs, its not ideal but hopefully the solar will take over the maintenance next month
  14. Curiously i was looking at a chinease suppliers site today and reading up on there battery indicators etc, they listed one that could read battery soc % battery drain rate amps, battery charge rate amps and obviously voltage, all for allegedly £25. ???? I think it also gave even more info but had to go to work. I intend to research it a bit more Martin
  15. Ive started off with 4x6v cells at 239A each, whilst i expect the fit out to take another 12 months i really dont know if or how they will pan out coupled hopefully next month to 480 solar and 45amp charger. Its a learning process at present. Lol everythings a learning process. keeping the faith as they say
  16. Thats so true. Id go with the best you can when you can Dean. Not wishing to hijack here, Yesterday I contacted a Fairly well known inverter company amongst boaters, to ask the correct spec to fit my seconhand 2500w Inverter, to b told tech help desk not avail till 11am, duly called back and asked. What is the corect in line fuse size from battery to unit and what recomended cable size ? answer (fuse about 300 to 400 amps and as for the cable use one the size of your finger ) ?????? amazed
  17. What has become of the stove you have removed
  18. I must say the overhaul feeling from this post is of a posative note, and good news. I truly hope maybe from this something can grow, we all have the ability to care and aid others. Where to go from here ? well Star gets my vote to start things off, what course it takes who knows but, if we can create a body that can help fellow boaters etc than it can only be a good thing. Regional also sounds good. I shall read with intrest and hope this thread grows as indeed momentum behind it kind regards Martin (titan)
  19. Mike i have just fitted leds to all my spots, which were g4 i think, the light colour is wonderfull but quite (dim ) compared to original, however its dissapointing but like you im fitting out, ive reordered again from same oriental suppier the next brightness (lumens ) up, to compare at £1. each i dont mind experimenting, i sort of dropped a bo""ok when i ordered some lovely switched wall spot lights from germany, they arrived and look great but bulb fitments were G9 an even rarer led fitment, again sourced from china £14.00 for 5 i patiently await there delivery The spec on all the led tallies with what you say 10/30 v. Il get back in touch when they arrive and offer more light on the issue (forgive the pun )
  20. Being quite new to boat ownership etc, as like many others i search for info, and often just ask for advice rather than search and advice is allways forthcoming and gratefully received. But not being a mbr of IWA or infact any other organisation related to the waterways, is there a charity set up other than the rnli, that helps people from the boating fraterenity ? I ask as i am not aware of one ? I as mechanic often support BEN, it tiny charity for people assoscited to the motor trade, and would like to know if theres a canal river equivant? If not my next thought is there could be, ought to be? so many of us on here all (mostly) here to help, one of the first boat peeps i met ten yrs ago is still going now but he is very very old has no family and lives happily on his spriger. he is a real character, but if and when he needs real assistance who does he turn to? im sure the marina will help some but only to a degree. I would be pleased to know if theres a sort of boaters benevolent fund or something? im not versed to put things across correctly or to proper grammer so forgive this post in my ignorance. regards Martin
  21. Just a quick question folks, what size calorifier is best ?? only 2 people on boat, i am wondering what you all think ie too big takes too long to heat and too small as not enough to last for a shower ??? all help appreciated thanks martin
  22. I have read this thread with intrest, i presently have a kabola old english keeping boat warm whilst doing the fit out etc, so far kabola heats well but the yellow flame causes a fair soot build up. if i run on half or above it seems to burn cleaner but to hot. As part of my fit out ive bought a second hand mx40 to run rads and water for a 58 foot boat, should i run the mx40 off the engine fuel tank? or utilise the existing bow tank which feeds the kabola? could i site the mx40 in the bow even ?? guess voltdrop would be an issue ? sorry about the questions, all advice gracefully received thankyou martin
