  1. I'll see you on the Shroppie then i expect since i'm heading that way after i've finished this pesky work thing that's taking up all my time at the moment If i get trapped on this canal I'll go insane...
  2. from BW: Leeds & Liverpool Canal & Leigh Branch Wednesday 2 June 2010 until further notice Due to low water levels these locks will be closed to allow the pounds sufficient time to recover to navigable levels. An update will be issued on Thursday 3rd June 2010 at 2pm Winding can be found below bridge 38 Alder Lane and above Lock 65 Wigan Top Lock British Waterways apologises for any inconvenience this may cause. Water levels ok at the other end although the restrictions mean i probably wont be able to visit Leeds on Saturday because my friend wont arrive in time for us to get through the locks by 4.30. Which is somewhat irksome.
  3. I had my licence renewal today. Sadly, they think my boat and I share the same name.
  4. glad to be of help. If BW come back to you with different numbers that you want checking feel free to pm me
  5. Waterscape says that you can pay over 5 or 9 instalments, so assuming you're paying over 9 (with the 1st at 20%) So your total would have been 150 + (8 x £75.12) = £750.96 Terminating after 3 months means you get 65% refund; £750.96 x 65% = 488.12 so licence fee minus refund minus what you've paid is 750.96 - 488.12 - 150 - 75.12 = £37.72 which you still owe them. If you cancelled in Feb & they received the discs before March started then the refund would be 75% (£563.22) which would make the sum 750.96 - 563.22 -150 -75.12 = minus £37.38 - ie They owe you £37.38.
  6. Hurrah! i gathered that. I've been reading much about electrics in preperation to 'sorting the batteries' but i forget it a week later. I'm reading & making notes of the relevant bits & i clicked on your thread for a bit of a break.. back to the notes now unless you want to recommend me a battery
  7. gah! i thought this would be interesting but it's more incomprehensible electrics you bastard smelly

  10. dont worry about it Steve. In my experience most folk you come across are a lot less judgemental than some posters come across as on here and are always happy to assist. I'd never single handed before so have been helped by many people I got in a right tangle trying to do a surprise swing bridge single handed & the boat that came up behind me to the rescue were lovely. As were all the people who helped me to moor in a tricky place or passed on tips regarding dangling fenders etc I have also been shouted at for not being psychic (by someone whod worked on the boats since boyhood or somesuch) but he was in the minority
  11. would it have a shower and a toilet*? *cassette, obviously

  13. I have had a reply Dear Ms Wolf, Thank you for your email to the Electoral Commission. It is the responsibility of local authorities to register people to vote, so you will need to pick a constituency in which to register. This could be somewhere you have family, or where you grew up, or anywhere where you would have a reasonable interest in the outcome of the election. It will then be the responsibility of that authority to register you. You can find contact details by visiting www.aboutmyvote.co.uk and entering a postcode. The deadline to register to vote in the forthcoming general and local elections is 20 April. Please let me know if you require any further information. Kind regards, Daniel Barker Public Information Officer The Electoral Commission Trevelyan House Great Peter Street London SW1P 2HW Tel: 020 7271 0534 Fax: 020 7271 0505 www.electoralcommission.org.uk www.aboutmyvote.co.uk Democracy matters I'd be interested to hear where got this from? I've heard it repeated as truth from bods on talkboards but nothing I read suggested it was true. Mr Baker's reply would suggest otherwise as well.
  14. That's what the mechanic said But check/change the O-rings 1st (thats what i meant by 'seals')
  15. Hey, it looks like a boat now. nice one stuart
  16. I had this problem. I've got the 3 cylinder beta marine (25? 28?) In my case the oily stuff was 'clean' oil so had to come from the gearbox rather than the engine. so was easier to diagnose. Where the pipes from the gearbox go in to the cooler there's a cylinder with lots of little pipes inside it (like an old fashioned mincer). This may be called 'the stack'. This was the problem in my case. To remove the stack you have to remove the bolt at both ends First tried changing the seals on the bit where the stack goes in and then tested. The oil sticks to the surfaces inside the cooler so it's difficult to tell if it's fixed. I ran the engine over a few days and kept an eye on the gear box level. I got someone in to fix it.
  17. Surely one should store the pole securely in the pole holder
  18. mushroom vents are adjustable!?!
  19. I have emailed the Electoral Commission from the aboutmyvote.co.uk website as follows: I currently live aboard my narrowboat. I have no mooring but move from place to place (covering a significant portion of the canal network on a continuous journey) and therefore am of no fixed address. I have read the 'no fixed address' FAQ and it does not help me. I am neither homeless or in a mental health hospital or remanded in custody. I could not make a 'declaration of local connection' that i spend a substantial proportion of my time anywhere if I am always just passing through. Please advise me on how i can register to vote I will report back when they answer
  20. humm ... bugger. What can we do about it? I shall email the party i want to vote for and see if they are motivated enough to find a solution
  21. Even more helpfully, from www.aboutmyvote.co.uk Myth: You have to live at a fixed address to register Truth: People with no fixed address can register using a ‘declaration of local connection’. You should contact your local electoral registration office for more information. You can find their contact details by entering your postcode on this site. Why is this declaring oneself to be homeless? 'of no fixed address' is not the same as 'homeless' is it? Why would it be a problem declaring oneself homeless? Do credit reference agencies get the info? Maybe i'll email what will be my local registration office and ask them.
  22. There's a thread in 'Living Afloat' about the census which strays into voting which contains the following... Hope this is helpful. I'm deciding whether to bother myself..
  23. Ah, I saw you go past. I'm @ Apperley Bridge at the moment where i'll be for wee while. I'll give you a wave if i spot you coming back the other way.
  24. no need to apologise, when i was a child i liked being mistaken for a boy Many thanks for the info & the geographical clarifying btw We were in Stoke Bruene on the same day in August
  25. you mean the testosterone? Thanks all for your replies, i'll be passing them on.
