  4. hi i'm sorry if i misled, but these are static (although in very beautiful settings and by themselves rather than on sites) anyhow - enjoy cheers nigel
  5. hi Gypsy caravan hey? d'you know you can rent one for holidays? try googling 'under the thatch' they have several in Wales and Ireland. (no financial connection). anyway, welcome to wetworld, it's great! and don't worry, you'll learn - people are usually happy to lend a hand/advice - in fact, you might want to arm yourself with a stout stick in case you need to beat them off! cheers nigel
  6. hi ally not really familiar with the fireangel, but i wnder if it might be power supply. or possibly co seeping from elsewhere - your engine? somebody else's fire/engine? as i said, no more than a couple of random thoughts. somebody will have the real answer though. cheers nigel
  7. i wonder if that one is down to pressure wave. you know how a boat travels easier on deeper water wher the pressure can spread away easier? on the nene you can really notice how you seem to go smoother as you get into deeper and bigger areas of river. so coming into the full lock is effectively giving you much deeper water for a while under the keel so there is less resistance from pressure wave so more back needed to stop. just a thought cheers nigel

  10. just of the top of my head could you find some kind of diffusing substance. maybe like the perspex in some fluorescent lighting units? if you could find an acceptable manner of mounting it then perhaps it would soften and spread the light from a 'bright' led. or, since they have such a low power usage you could gradually get a few more 'soft' fittings so the overall illumination is increased whilst preserving the softness. maybe your set-up doesn't allow for adding more light fittings. sorry can't be more helpful. cheers nigel

  12. maybe a good idea to get a 'forstner' bit. use on low speed (battery drill would be good) only. they are very short in length and are used for eg drilling out for kitchen cabinet door hinges. they go up to quite large diameters. here's one Link to forstner bits they are pretty controllable at low speed. but still maybe a depth stop would be useful. cheers nigel
  13. no, you could just get it in 1/2 bottles - you know, hip flask shaped. cheers nigel
  14. clearly two cowls are needed, one for actual use, in black; and one in orange for inspection purposes. i actually like those rotating ones, myself, they remind me of my childhood in the village. but it would be a dull old world if we was all the same, wouldn't it? cheers nigel
  15. just to add my two penn'orth, i think this would be a great idea too. particularly for those who don't have a boat but want to get some time in. brilliant suggestion cheers nigel

thanks chris, i admit i had overlooked the engine running factor. that alters things slightly. but even so, it's good to have confirmation. why the supplier were suggesting something in the region of 6mm2 i have no idea. and just so you don't worry about meeting me coming the other way in a tunnel, the light is only about 40w too, i was just erring on the side of caution - a thing i can be prone to do. cheers again nigel

sorry to hi-jack the thread, but i didn't want to start a new one for what is a really minor query. i just wondered exactly what degree of chunkiness you had for the tunnel light cable. i need to jury-rig one very soon and don't want to under specify on cabling. i will have to run it about 15 metres each way so a total run of about 30m and quite a low wattage of lamp - certainly not 50watts. i worked it out using the usual formulae but the local cable supplier seems to think i need about double the thickness, so i'm wondering if they are not either a) not very expert or trying to make a bit more from the deal. again sorry to hi-jack. cheers nigel

  19. okay, nicholsons, and imrays for the nene etc. but will be looking at first mate too, soon. mind you, its not so much for routes more for facilities and stuff. also sometimes use online planner to get a feel of a trip in advance. cheers nigel
  20. best sausages i have had in the last 35 years? and i don't exaggerate here. Seven Wells Family Butchers in Oundle. Link to 7 Wells i have nothing more to say except that i like the 'bready', dry texture and really dislike sausages that feel greasy to the palate. but then it's down to taste isn't it. problem is that it's so diffucult to find bangers that aren't greasy. cheers nigel
  21. i always understood that if it was fitted it must be safe, compliant and operative. but if it wasn't there, as gazza says, nothing to test. for example, you might cook on board using a portable camping stove which is not, of course, acceptable for BSS purposes. so you leave it in the car when it's tested. not there: not testable. same with electrics - anything fitted must be able to pass the test. (i don't recommend using a camp stove BTW. just mentioning that that's what some people might do) sorry, beating it to death a bit here. cheers nigel
  22. there are a few things that send me straight back. the smell you get during a hot spell in summer when there is a short light shower. suddenly you realise that the smell of the air has changed; it was dusty and tired and suddenly its clean and cool. heaven, and only lasting for a minute. the smell i remember from the old timber stand at Franklins Gardens. combination of late autumn, faint pipe smoke and wintergreen liniment. i can almost feel it, the excitement, the spectacle. and walking back past the old railway station to get the green bus home. building dams in the stream in the village. the old co-op with the tubs for biscuits, and the bacon slicer. the co-op in town with the vacuum tube system that sent the payment up to the account office and returned the receipt and change. my mother's co-op divi number - 22233. frost ferns on the windows. having only 2 channels on tv - black and white too. probably no more than 20% of famlies in the village having a car - one, not one each! playing round the farmyard at my mates dads farm. supercar, fireball xl5. the outdoor swimming pool at middy meadow in northampton - with diving boards. stop me now, or i'll turn into a 'it's all gone downhill' type memories... cheers nigel
  23. might be worth keeping an eye open for some reclaimed stuff. you can sometimes pick up decent boards if you are lucky. i once got about 30 square metres of old 3/4 t&g from a job i was on and it was really fine quality. well hardened off too, even resists stilettos. cheers nigel
  24. don't forget to wrap yourself in chicken wire too. then bits don't float to the surface! personally, i shall just disappear leaving the engine running and the table set for dinner like the Marie Celeste. we did share a few locks on the stratford on avon with a chap aged about 80 who had been cc'ing the system for the previous several years since he was widowed. afaik he is still puttering around, and best of luck to him cheers nigel
  25. sorry to say, i suspect that you would have to go to about 15mm to get t&g without the vee groove union, as the thinner stuff tends to be feature cladding. i don't think the volume producers see much of a market for plain board. and i think that to get lapped joins you would have to go to a small joiners shop and get it run off as a special order. the problem with mouldings on something as thin as 8 mm is that there is so little left on either side that the machined pieces are prone to splitting. if you think about it, you are asking the joint to hold with only 4 mm on each side. it might be worth your while ringing round a few local joiners shops and seeing what they reckon. sometimes you can come up with a diamond. also, the lacquered part, is this essential? that would be likely to add quite a bit to the price, i would say. sorry to be so negative, but the nature of timber and all that. good luck though nigel
