  1. You just need to watch out for the debris that comes up with the tide when it overtops the weir at Lower Parting, think trees, fridges, all sorts.
  2. I had assumed that was so that there would be no boats moored in the area around Salvage Turn
  3. There is also Whitlocks End station, convenient for junction 3 or 4 of M42, lots of free parking, however the service stops at 6pm on Sundays.
  4. Yes that is true, check the CRT opening hours in the stoppage notices. You get Tuesday off! Note also that this year they close at 6pm, previous years it was 7pm (I think).
  5. When I was a member of the working class, work’s VPN worked perfectly with Three, do you know why there is an issue with specific providers.
  6. There are lots of public carparks close to the Mail Box, it depends on which direction you will be coming from as to which is best. Have you considered getting the train in, it will probably be cheaper than the cost of the car parking!
  7. We have sorted our plans out, and I have just filled in the form on the IWA website. Have not had an email with details or anything though, presumably that will come in the following days. The question about where you will be mooring on the Saturday nightis bit confusing, who moors at Smethwick Junction, and there was no option for in the city centre. If they want the boats the cruise into the centre on mass, then I am happy to go down the Smethwick Junction first thing Sunday morning, but I think that needs to be made clear in the communication that is hopefully to come. If there are any organisers are on here who could take that on board that would be great, but I have also emailed the any questions email on the IWA site.
  8. There are only 3 of the bridges that have VHF. The rule is even for the ones that an NB can pass under you have to wait for a green.
  9. You wait for a green, end of, or else you will get shouted at. I waited for a green with the bow of the boat past the light and I got a right telling off! The two (smaller ones) that you can pass under in a NB, you still wait for a green, or for the keeper to wave you through.
  10. I don’t think so. This is the list of facilities on the Avon, published by ANT https://www.avonnavigationtrust.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/11/Welcome-Information-2023.pdf
  11. Yep saw the update on the stoppage, currently on our way
  12. We are on the approach to Leamington at the other side at the moment, will move later on, assuming open to get to bottom late afternoon. We only want to get up to where you are today. I would appreciate an update when it opens, as CRT will inevitably lag a bit in updating the stoppage notice.
  13. Now a stoppage notice https://canalrivertrust.org.uk/notices/25836-hatton-lock-32 according to CRT on Twitter, should be open this afternoon.
  14. Nice one. There is no stoppage for this so hopefully that means it will be fixed tomorrow morning, we are intending to go up the bottom 5 locks at Hatton tomorrow, so fingers crossed. I guess we will find out when we get to the bottom.
  15. Well I see the latest update is a bit more hopeful for the timescale being not as long. Next update on Thursday.
  16. At least the good news for those boats that were stuck in Leicester is that Birstall lock opened today, so they can at least escape escape even if it’s back theway they came.
  17. I’ve not done as yet, but we are on our way to Birmingham at the moment, so if the timing works out may well sign up.
  18. Have you considered hiring from Anglo Welsh at Bunbury for a trip to Llangollen. Before we had the boat we did that. As has been said the only busy locks you will probably find are Grindley Brook (it just takes a long time when there are lot of boats as there is a staircase) and New Marton (I think because for a lot of hirers these are the only two locks they will do, so for most of them they will never have seen a lock before, and they are understandably slow. By the time you get there you will be experts). I would say it is a must to work your timing so you spend a night in the basin at Llangollen, I think you will find that quite special, and a real sense of achievement.
  19. The update on Kilby lock today, was not good news. Next update at the end of the month! Notice Alert Leicester Line (Grand Union Canal) Location: Kilby Lock - Leicester Line (Grand Union Canal) Starts At: Lock 30 - Kilby Lock Ends At: Lock 30 - Kilby Lock Monday 17 July 2023 until further notice Type: Navigation Closure Reason: Structure failure Update on 21/07/2023: We appreciate that there are a small number of boaters currently stuck between the unplanned emergency closures of Kilby Lock and Birstall Lock. If any of the affected boats require water, there is a water point at Friar's Mill visitor moorings that can be used. Update on 21/07/2023: The crane boat is now on site, materials are being delivered and preparations are being made to begin the extensive work required at Kilby Lock next week. This is a complex job and unfortunately we do not currently have a time scale of when the works will be completed. We will update the website by the end of July, as soon as we have more updates.
  20. I bet that will be the 14 ft monster that was moored opposite the Boat House in Braunston yesterday. Presumably they went up the locks today.
  21. Well our plans look like they have been screwed by this. We have slowed down on our way to Foxton, and will probably go down tomorrow, and depending on the update on Friday decide to turn round or not. If it is good news on Kilby, then the limiting factor would be Birstall, but we would not be able to leave Kilby Bridge until we know Birstall is open or else we would not be able to get through Leicester, assuming the secure moorings in Leicester will be full and there is not really anywhere else safe to stop until the Hope and Anchor. That means Tuesday through Leicester, but we need to be in Birmingham by Saturday, and that seems a push. Thoughts on if you can stop anywhere the Leicester side of Birstall? Obviously if Kilby is longer then all bets are off and it is turn round and back the way we have come for the second time this year. We have also been wondering is it was the same boat that broke both locks.
  22. Whilst I guess still doable, there are two hours less of lock opening hours now than there used to be. I was just making sure that that the OP was factoring that in, you would not want to arrive at Gloucester after the lock closed on a Monday and waiting until Wednesday morning on the wall as the river goes into flood!
  23. In similar circumstances with rain and at the same time of the year about 8 years ago we ended pup having to stop at Upton and spending three or four days there while the river went up 10ft. If you decide to make a run for Gloucester, assuming that you at Worcester now, I don’t thing you will get there until Wednesday, as Gloucester lock like the whole G&S is closed on Tuesdays. Perhaps it is possible to get from Diglis to Gloucester lock in the 10 hour opening window tomorrow, but you need to be certain! Is Diglis lock working ok now, it was broken last week?
