  1. now that's funny. Terence
  2. You make a got point there. (Note to self stay inside, dry). I'm only upset by there being no boat coming the other way. Terence
  3. I’ve been told some funny tails about boating, but had a real belly laugh when I was told about two lovely ladies (first timers) travelling through Braunston Tunnel. They collected the boat from the hire company and set off through the locks towards Braunston tunnel. When they entered the tunnel both ladies went into the cabin closing the doors behind them. The person telling me the tail said he followed the boat in and couldn’t believe it, as there boat bumped from side to side in the tunnel. When they emerged from the other end the doors opened and out they came carrying on as it everything was fine. He said when the appropriate moment came he explained the procedure to them and they felt a little embarrassed and commented that they thought it was quite a bumpy ride. Oh hum. Terence
  4. I think one of the major problems the Nelson has is The Boathouse (or should I say the Milhouse?) The Boathouse is doing so well with meals etc that the Nelson couldn't compete on price. The next folk to take the Nelson on really need to think about what they are getting into and how they can draw business away from the Boathouse. It's a nice pub on a lovely part of the canal but these days that does't win you the prize. It's got to somehow get out of the Half Nelson hold and once again become the Full Nelson. Terence
  5. For some time now I've been posting the Roses & Castles courses in the General Boating of the forum. When tonight I have just come across the 'Links Directory' which is where I think it should really go. I've been on this forum for a while now and it's the first time I've seen this section. I have re-listed the course with a little more info in the Directory but it doesn't seem to be showing as of yet, I can only assume it has to be vetted by the moderators? Sorry if I've been a bit of an ass, as Painting courses are not what you would call 'General Boating'. Terence
  6. Hello to one and all. For the past few years now I have been teaching ‘Roses & Castles’ (weekend, 2 days) Painting courses in collaboration with Stoke Bruerne Canal Museum. The dates for our next courses are 5th/6th May and 19th/20th May, 8th/9th September and 22nd/23rd September 2012. There are four weekends to choose from. If you are interested in either course you can book a place by contacting the museum on 01604862229 here is a link to their websit Stoke Bruerne Canal Museum All materials are provided and you usually find that the majority of people attending have never painted in this style before (which helps for a more fun two days). All you need to bring is a happy smile and an apron/old shirt to paint in. The museum will also assist you with information for accommodation if required. I hope that some of you can join us and if you need further help just drop me a line. Terence
  7. If it was only that simple. Terence
  8. Hi everyone, Due to the huge success of the 'Roses & Castles' course at 'Stoke Bruern Canal Museum' (apologies to those we had to turn away due to space) they have asked me for dates for four courses next year 2012 as opposed to the usual two courses. The dates are as follows, May 5th/6th and 19th/20th Sep 8th/9th and 22nd/23rd to book a place simply contact the Museum. If you need any more help just drop me a line. I'm mentioning it now as some thought it could make a nice Christmas gift. Here's a few pic's of the last course. On another subject, we are selling our house in Braunston by the Oxford. I'll post it on the forsale section soon. Cheers, Terence
  9. Hi Ray, The butty you saw was 'Joe' one of Pete Boyce's boats. Renfrew is now moored up at the bottom of our field keeping Empire company. I let Pete know about the Video and he became very excited, Big thanks Mike. Terence

  14. Hi everyone, I have just been sent this email below of a festival being held at the Village hall Braunston by Life and Times. Thought some of you may be interested. Cheers Terence Dear All With your Braunston base and an obvious canal connection, I am writing to let you know about an event at Braunston Village Hall on 22nd October that might be of interest. Life & Times will be performing our 250-years-of-the-canals show WHERE THE WORKING BOATS WENT. If it interests you, please tell your friends. Told in song and story, Where the Working Boats Went is a multi-media show, mixing drama, pictures and music to tell the story of the Inland Waterways of Britain, with new songs and tunes, written by Graeme Meek and Barry Goodman, as well as a few songs from other writers and from the folk tradition. The story is told in the words of the people who lived and worked on the canals, and is linked by songs, with plenty of opportunities for the audience to join in with the choruses! A backdrop of images from the canals, both historical and contemporary, complements the show, and a broom-dance livens up the pub-setting in the second half! The show has been performed up and down the country from Sidmouth (Devon) to Shepley (Yorks) via Birmingham and Shrewsbury (amongst other places!) It is due to be performed at Gloucester Waterways Museum on October 1st. Tickets are available at £6 each from Barry Goodman, 01462 456811, at Londis in Braunston or from http://www.wegottickets.com/event/130992 (a small booking fee if using this method). Doors open at 7:30pm and the show starts at 8:00pm. You can see details of the show including testimonials at http://www.lifeandtimes.me.uk/Shows.htm#_WHERE_THE_WORKING_1. There are photos from the show at http://www.lifeandtimes.me.uk/Photos.htm#_WHERE_THE_WORKING and you can hear examples of our music (not just that from the show) across the web using links here: http://www.lifeandtimes.me.uk/hear_us.htm We hope to see you there. Regards Graeme Meek
  15. Some fascinating stuff here. This was to be my next question. I assume the locks were huge, how many Tom Puddings at a time and 'how'. Cheers.
  16. A superb link and the Pathe clip fascinating. Tom meaning Big and Pudding a string on sausages. Many thanks This was also my thought. Terence
  17. Hi all, Does anyone know how Tom Puddings got their name? I assumed it was a persons name but I now beleive not. cheers
  18. I would agree with Kitman on Mr Foster, I can see some of Nurser in the work. This image is a Nurser Can similar but I can see differences. Terence

  20. Hi Give this a try, it's based on the Northern Knobstick. If you get chance seek out Alan Barents work (Big Al) he's always out and about on the system. Terence
  21. Many many thanks. Have a great time Thanks Alan. Yes have anchor. Will probably do like you said and test the water (to coin a phrase) on the non-tidal part first. Terence
  22. How do Mr Job, Sounds superb. Now that we are moving to Reading I'm at some point going to have to do the Thames. Starting from Braunston as the boat will be staying there for a while. Could I ask a couple of questions? Apart from the licence is there much more needed to go onto the Thames and is there certain protocol? Also, maybe I should have started with this, my engine is a Lister LPW2 18hp 2600rpm. Will I have enough power to cope? I would love to hear how the trip went when you get chance to log on at some point. Cheers Terence
  23. So, lets hear what you think on this one. The Braunston Spires along the Oxford Click here Terence
  24. I just want to try and understand the 'Long Term Mooring' so there may be a few ifs and buts here. I've seen many stretches of bank showing Visitor mooring then continuing to Long term mooring (permit holders only). If the long term mooring is long enough for (lets say 5 boats) will 5 permits be allocated to only 5 boats for that particular stretch, or will more permits be allocated so if one boat decides to take a trip then someone else with a permit is allowed to moor there? Also do you have to display the permit in your window? Or is a long term mooring (permit holders only) the same as a permanent mooring? Many thanks Terence
