  1. Hi Ray I’d like to think it’s my animal magnetism attracting them (doubtful). Or maybe the modern man thinks it’s a bit strange to go painting roses and castles. We will never know. Terence
  2. Thank you to all that popped in at Stoke Bruerne Canal Museum. A great weekend and another group of happy painters. 'Class of 2013'
  3. So the crux of the debate is if you meet a gate that is open you only have to close the one and then open the one, if coming the other direction you have to close two then open the one, and in the case of the original post while the chaps boat is half out keep closing the gate many times till you chop his boat in half.
  4. Water will always find the easiest path though. So if only one gate is holding back the water pressure as opposed to two and a gap is found then the water will exploit that gap. So surly closing both gates is the right thing to do irrespective of what extra labour this will course. So closing both worn gates is better than leaving one to suffer.
  5. You seem to have a reasonable and logical argument and I commend you, well done
  6. In your opinion the Guide book is wrong. I'd like to think the locks are better now due to the hard work of the maintenance crew and the diligent closing of lock gates by the users. Problems occure less when a gate is shut that left open. To Norman. bit if advise DON'T GO THERE.
  7. When you drive your car and stop at a traffic light on red, you can clearly see there is nothing coming from your right, does your logic tell you it is safe for you to turn left and the law is an ass so you do so. No you stay put. That’s because the law says so, Canals can't be policed as the roads are so we have guidelines. Who’s to say they are right or wrong? The trustees have asked us to close Gates then that is what we should do. Nothing to do with as Carl said Sheep etc etc. The Trust have taken a huge responsibility with our Canals so we should help them by adhering to their guidelines With top Gate open, if the gate at the bottom of the lock leaks then water will constantly drain through. If the top gate was closed then this theoretically should help to stop water draining away or at least minimise the loss. If the top Gate is the leaky one and the bottom gate is sound then the lock would stay full whether the gate was left open or not. But clearly from your replies you will continue to leave gates open no matter what anyone says on this forum. Happy sailing.
  8. If you were behind me I would not be so selfish as to close the lock gate as I leave.
  9. I've never had anyone step onto our boat without being invited first, but embarrassingly, I once climbed aboard the wrong boat. We had hired from Middlewich Narrowboats moored up for the evening and went for a short walk, whilst gone another Middlewich boat had moored next to us and without a thought I climbed aboard to be confronted by an elderly couple having tea. They forgave me.
  10. Not sure if this should be in here or Virtual Pub. I'll be at Stoke Bruerne Canal Museum this weekend (11/12 May) teaching at the first of this year’s Roses & Castles courses (fully booked). If anyone who finds themselves in the area and would like to have a look in to see what’s going on, feel free. I'm sure the students would like it (try not to scare them). We will be in the classrooms at the back of the Museum. Hope to see some of you. Terence
  11. The "vilify and despise" isn't the issue really. The issue is BW (CaRT) felt it necessary to ask folk to close gates, necessary enough to put it in writing in the hope that people would. (They have there reasons for asking this practice as Sarina Young would happily explain CaRT Customer service). If the guides and signs weren't there to help then there would be more problems on the canals. I needed them when I very first went up Grindley Brook locks.
  12. I disagree, I think the majority of boaters do take it seriously. I do understand that the rules are a guide and not harden fast, (maybe they should be then there would be no issue, difficult to police) but they are there to help and in this instance the help is to close the gates whether we like it or not. I must admit I do like to find a lock gate open for me, but if the lock is full I also like to find the far gate shut. On a seperate note, I have your old potting bench (I think it was yours?) salvaged when Lucy was moved.
  13. Then sorry but you will be vilified and despised by the majority of boaters. And rightly so in my opinion. At least have a look at the boaters handbook page 13 http://canalrivertrust.org.uk/media/library/141.pdf I agree with you. Just couldn't type quick enough to say it before you. CaRT say close the gates, that should be it. If anyone disagrees with this rule then they should contact CaRT to complain and not inconvenience others just because they think is a silly rule. To the original post, as many have said, the chap is a very sad man. Try to let it go and be the bigger person by just moving on. To Carl Terence

  16. Finally found the time to finish the Cabinet door I started ages ago. Now to move onto the bed board mainly due to the fact I broke it with my fat arse. Terence
  17. Makes the piece of canal side land we bought in Braunston a real steal. Terence
  18. Hi Alan Your Can is an A G Lester Can. This pic is a 2 Gallon BCM Can modelled on the A G Lester Can. As no one in this country wants to manufacture these items I praise BCM for at leaset making an effort. Lester Cans pop up now and again from back rooms, sheds and stores. Hidden away from sight. Sorry to use bright paint on my work and to put in alot of effort (with ease) it's the way I paint and seem to suit me fine. Enjoy your Can and if you would like me to repaint it just drop me a line. Cheers, Terence
  19. Something to cheer us up. Thought I would share another lovely Cabin Stool (just finished painting). Very pleased with. Terence
  20. Came across these two on ebay. Ideal for the vintage among you. Water Can Hand Bowl Terence
