  1. There is often at least one a year organised cruise over, someone will be along shortly from up there to say Yay or Nay.
  2. As Richard points out above, the Leicester City storm drains outflow enter the navigation just below Lime Kiln Lock. There is no catch net system or grids to separate the rubbish so it fills the canal, and subsequently the river below Abbey Park. It is always bad after a flood year, this was the highest it has ever been so even worse.
  3. Yes, up the Trent, across and up the Trent and Mersey, Bridgewater and bingo , you are there.
  4. Sheesh, must be, you donner want to live near there.
  5. He wants to have open log fires in the middle of the boat as the BSS has no legislation covering it, or rules to stop it.
  6. Shame, as the more people do it, the less weed grows, and the less likely it is that CRT will mothball it. The Nene is a stunning river journey, leads to the Middle Levels(bit boring), then the GT Ouse, Wissey and Cam.
  7. To be honest, if the river is like it is now, you will struggle at the bottom of the arm....a few weeks of cold, dry and low humidity air will soon bring the top end back down though. The Northampton Arm is 17 locks(average 4 1/2 hours), below is Northampton town moorings, or book into Becketts Park marina for a night (in advance as it is packed at present). It's probably not worth going any further down the river unless you want to Italian tune your engine on a quick run. This time of year, Stoke Bruerne may be a better bet.
  8. Nowadays, the career criminals dont bother, as there is little chance of comeback from the Police, who are tied up arresting 50 nice eco friendly people and sending them to jail every time they walk slowly in a road....whilst allowing another 50 with Palestinian flags to stop buses and cars with no fear of arrest.
  9. Stowe Hill Marine went bust in 2009, it's been Stowe Hill Workshop since then.
  10. If you are on the central Grand Union section, there seems to be a spate of thefts from boats at present.
  11. Unusual handrail design, so I go for Rushes Lock on the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation.
  12. Wikipedia is your friend. From 1974 to 1990 the canal benefited from job creation schemes run by the Manpower Services Commission[30] and Youth Training Scheme to work on the northern section from Resolven to Ysgwrfa.[31] By 1990 there was 3.5 miles (5.6 km) of navigable canal, including 7 restored locks and a slipway at Resolven basin.[32] It received a 1998 Europa Nostra award for the quality of the work, and a Civic Trust Award in 1992. The £4 million project was jointly funded by the Welsh Office and the Prince of Wales Trust.[32] The Rheola aqueduct in the middle of this section was refurbished by the Canals Society in 1990.[33] The stream that is now carried under the canal had previously been carried over it in a cast iron trough, but was diverted through a channel cut across the canal bed after high flows overtopped the trough. This required the construction of a new aqueduct,[34] and once completed, the Canals Society launched their trip boat, named Thomas Dadford, on 12 July 1990, to provide canal trips for the public.[35] The Enfys also provided boat trips for the Enfys Trust from the Tŷ Banc former lock-keepers cottage at Resolven, until 2008.[31] South-western sectionedit In 1993 the stretch of canal from Abergarwed locks to Tyn-yr-Heol lock at Tonna was polluted when iron-bearing water began discharging from a mine adit of the Ynysarwed coal mine. This turned the water orange, and deposited ferruginous sediment along the canal. A treatment plant and reedbeds were installed to clean the mine water, and this £1.6 million project was commissioned in 1999.

  16. I would think that's the way the owners got out, and up onto the bridge.
  17. Was it this one...
  18. I remember picking a boat up from Whilton a few years ago, taking it to Ely the day the Middle Levels re-opened. On the 2nd day, it was very cold so lit the stove when we reached Wellingborough. As the evening progressed, and the boat warmed up, all of a sudden buzzing, then more buzzing.. They were all hidden in curtain folds, I spent ages swatting them, killed at least 10!! .
  19. "Its over the fields." Not much gets past you does it.... 😜 Luckily, it's one of the lowest tides on this moon cycle...
  20. Trent Junction, not sure I would want to be on that pontoon at present.... Soar from Mountsorrel..
  21. The classic example is all the Tory MPs turning up at their local hospital with a box/2 boxes of chocolates on Christmas Eve.....with photographer present....
  22. More likely a police aware sticker.
