    Not quite, until about ten years ago Methanol was incorporated in Methalayted Spirit, but it is apparently poisonous and can cause blindness etc, so was removed from the formula.

    “The European Union agreed in February 2013 to the mutual procedures for the complete denaturing of alcohol:[10]

    Per hectolitre (100 L) of absolute ethanol: 3 litres of isopropyl alcohol, 3 litres of methyl ethyl ketone and 1 gram denatonium benzoate.”

    I have looked at that chart and would be interested to see where you get that from metyhylated spirit is not listed.

    Ethanol and Meths are fundamentally the same thing as I understand it.

    Some pressure lamps and stoves have gadget to alllow pre-heating using the paraffin, but they still end to smoke

    My dad's old paraffin blowlamp was always fun to light.

    Meths actually has a much reduced energy compared to diesel / paraffin, so not only is it 'twice the price', but you need to use almost twice as much to get the same heat.

    Part of a presentation I made to a camping / hiking group on the 'best' (most bang per gram) types of fuels to use for stoves

    Hexamine = 8 Wh / gram
    Chafing Gel = 7.44 Wh / gram
    Propane LPG = 13.6Wh / gram
    Mixed Camping Gas = 14.2 Wh / gram
    Seasoned Dry Wood = 4.2 Wh / gram
    Methylated Spirit = 7.22 Wh/Gram
    Petrol / Diesel = 12.5Wh / gram
    Anthracite = 8.6 Wh / gram

    How about Acetylene? That'd be hot...

    A chap posted on Facebook he has just bought 8 110Ah batteries to replace the knackered ones, I pointed out if he takes them down to 50% he probably wont be able to recharge them in a day.

    Yup. Firstly do a power audit, secondly work out how you will generate that. Go backwards and forwards with those two until they balance. Lastly, buy enough batteries.

    is there anything in the idea that the more complex electrical items become the shorter their lifespan?

    I think it’s just luck of the draw. I’ve had a lot of desktop computers over the last 25 years or so and some of them kept going until retirement whilst others died for one reason or another. I’ve had cheap office computers die and I’ve had multi-thousand pound workstations die. No rhyme nor reason that I’ve noticed.

    Bought the boat and replaced the 120 va invertor with a victron 3000 multyplus new bat monitor and colour controller, seller replaced bats with 3 x 120aH maintenance free and a 90 ah starter.

    I have set the BM to 360 and left everthing else to factory setting. What else should I consider to change within the system/ programing to give the batteries a "good life" while maintaing electricity to the boat?

    HTATBO as a new toy on her phone that instructs me to start the engine, makes a change from putting the kettle on :)

    All you need to do is to fully charge them as often as possible, at the very least, weekly, more often if possible. It’s all in the OP.

    You may find the standby current on the 3000 is significantly higher than the 2000. Not an issue if you switch it on and off as required but if you leave on 24/7 you could be adding 24 amp hours to your daily load.

    The CombiMaster 12/2000-100 and the CombiMaster 12/3000-100 have identical specs for power consumption so that isn't an issue.

    Have you considered a separate charger and inverter? When either one packs up, the replacement cost is a lot less because you aren't having to replace the fully-working other half.

    Very true :)

  8. To see how easy it’ll be to replace the cable, give it a gentle tug from above and see if you can see it moving down below - this will be easier with two of you. If you can, then securely attach a piece of string to the end of the cable in the cabin and pull it up through and out of the roof. Once you’ve done that you can use that pull-string to pull through any new cables.

    The 2A 12V feed will just be for the aerial amplifier which you probably won’t require if you replace the broken flying saucer with a decent log periodic.

    Found the true RMS Fluke it says 11.985v so  in the middle of the other two

    That's 3 meters 3 readings all of the same source.

    Can I justify the cost of getting the Fluke calibrated now I am no longer working.

    Or shall I just keep the meters apart.

    Get it calibrated. You know it makes sense :)

    Betcha it comes back from calibration reading exactly the same...
