  1. Agreed, if you have a mooring, then your annual licence application form will be sent to you. Otherwise, its a Visitors Licence only - maximum 21 days IIRC. Jo.
  2. Yep, that's the right boat. I don't mind which side you photograph, so long as its the signwriting, which shows the colours, more or less. I realise that a camera cannot capture the colours exactly right, but it will remind me what it was I really liked about it! I am very grateful for this. Jo
  3. Don't suppose you took any photos of that indignity did you? J.
  4. Hope its the right boat! I am pretty sure the one I am looking for is called St David's, not Mr David? Thanks for this. Jo.
  5. Thank you so much! Thanks for the offer Jon. I could not have given you info on the security there, but I expect there would have been some. I appreciate your reply. jo.
  6. Hi all I wonder if anyone can help me to get a photograph of a boat name? The narrowboat is "ST DAVID'S" and it is usually moored at Limehouse Basin. It is named St David's in English on one side and in Welsh on the other. Its colours are navy, red and cream mainly (IIRC). We took photos of the name of the boat a couple of weeks ago on the River Wey, but now cannot find the images. We loved the colours they had used (especially a lovely pale blue for shading), and we need to give Dean Box/and the boat painters some colours very very soon, as our boat is being repainted in October. So this is really just to ask if anyone is in the vicinity of Limehouse Basin and could possibly take a photograph of this boat name for us again. A big ask, but I thought it was worth a try! Thanks Jo x
  7. We moored up at Dapdune Wharf a fortnight ago and returned to find two unoccupied boats alongside. With 2 breasted up boats in front as well, we were rather hemmed in, so decided to just put the kettle on. It wasn't long before we only had 1 boat to move to enable us to leave, and we met the owners next day and shared locks. They thanked us for having tied them up securely when we left. I don't mind boats tying up alongside, but I think it would be helpful, if they are going to leave them unattended, to leave a note saying how long they are likely to be. J.
  8. Hang in there OP, a sensible answer may still turn up! J.
  9. Sorry to hear that your narrowboat has sunk. That's awful. Personally I do not know anyone who can help, but no doubt somebody on here will. J.
  10. Sensibly avoiding any comment of a technical nature, can I just say that its just plain UGLY? Jo.
  11. Thanks all for the replies on springs. Sorry to have taken over this thread for a minute! Jo.
  12. I have never moored up using a spring - cos I don't know how If its easy to describe I would be grateful ............. x
  13. coincidentally, it was suggested to me on Saturday that my son should speak to Louis on Madam about perhaps applying for a Summer Assistants job on the locks next Summer. Can't remember why his name came up, but I think he is something to do with volunteers. Can you enlighten me further Blackrose? This would be a help. Is he moored near Shepperton? Jo.
  14. We came across a dredger and workboat together across the cut on the (eastern) K&A in June. I thought I knew just where to hit the dredger to push it back in - but I was wrong (boiiiing!!) they are heavier than I thought!. We tied it back as best we could, but now at least I know why they do not use good ropes to tie them up. J.
  15. Thanks Twinp Only just seen this reply (been on hols). bloody kids Just to let you know that the four boys are out again this weekend, so more ropes required I think, and don't forget to tie the portapotti down!
  16. Just an update on this, for all those who were interested. My son has now been volunteering for a few weeks, and is really enjoying it. The lock keepers he has been with seem to be very friendly, and happy to have him there. He was at Penton Hook for a little while and is now down at Sunbury. He is there today if anyone is going through He also worked on Saturday night for the Sunbury Regatta, until 10 p.m. (they keep the lock manned until midnight on Regatta day). No reimbursement of travelling expenses has come through yet, but I expect that is just the usual admin hiccups Personally, I was a little fed up to find that, because they did not get enough volunteers, they ended up employing Summmer Assistants again this year anyway - so he could have applied for that, if only he had known!! He has said he would like to be a Summer Assistant next year if he can, so maybe his experience this year will help towards that. It is certainly keeping him off the computer games for a litte while. Jo.

  18. I was going to suggest the same thing. Not too far to travel for you, and the River Wey is well worth a visit. You have two bases to choose from, Farncombe Boathouse or Guildford Boathouse. Let us know where you eventually choose, and how it goes. Jo.
  19. Ian did you mean 21 July here? Jo.
  20. The boat is now back safely on the River Wey and making its way home. They got to Windsor which was their aim. No 3 son was on hand to see them back through Penton Hook lock on Sunday - (quite funny, he had nicked one of his brother's best T shirts to go to work in - foolish boy - of course it was spotted immediately by the "skipper" - "what you doing wearing my stuff?"). They broke only the broom (when sweeping leaves off the roof) - not sure whether I am more amazed that they managed to break a broom, or that they were cleaning the boat! They even found camping places when required. They lost a picnic blanket in the water, but that was retrieved by a friendly canoeist at Weybridge. The walkie talkie did not belong to me, thank goodness. Nick, we had not yet purchased one! (or should I say two). So fingers crossed it looks like it all went OK. Will let you know after boat inspection tonight! Jo.
  21. Update - son has been renamed Captain Birdseye by his crew and they have lost a walkie talkie overboard already. Only been going since 9.30 a.m. this morning! J.
